What would you buy for GTR money?

Nice fun topic.

Difficult for me as I would be split between buying fun and comfort. The few on my list would be,

Lotus Exige - It would be a nice replacement and next step up from my Elise and would tick the fun box.

BMW M5 E60 - V10 engine, comfort and power. What's not to like, oh yeah, its a 5 series BMW.

BMW M2 - Got a massive soft spot for the BMW M235i so an M2 has got to be a blast. No idea how much they will cost though but probably more than £35k.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2015 - Subaru is my favorite car manufacturer and would be the perfect replacement for my WRX.

Sensible choice would be a Porsche Cayman but not sure I can ever get my head around owning a Porsche.

i'd try and find the cleanest RX7 FD and mod it to the max using premium parts or just buy one from the overly priced New-Era imports guys. The same for an old Pulsar GTi-R. Buy the cleanest one I could find for the money and mod it into a monster.

Speaking from first hand experience and coming from someone who loves fd's after owning 5, they are utterly fantastic, but, start to tw*t around with tuning them and you will generally spend more time maintaining/improving/caring for them than driving and unless you were lucky enough to live close to one of the specialist to which there are maybe 5 or so, i just dont think its an option or the car would spend more time on transporter being shipped to your nearest specialist. THE only way i would ever get back into an Rx7 is commission a build for a short block triple made from the original 12a rotary Rx7 and run a safe 500 - 600hp and thats probably going to stand you in at 50k for the full car build doing it right.

How did I miss this?

A very safe bet, great car that you can enjoy and probably not loose a penny, probably make a few ££ in the long run.

Around £44k upwards new apparently. But the plus side is that they are likely to hold their price for a while, certainly until they become so common like the M3 that the prices start to drop (which will take a while). Following the 1M which actually costs the same now as it did brand new 5 years ago, demand for the M2 is quite high. It wont be as limited as the 1M was, but I expect you could probably own it for 12months and nearly get your money back on it.

If I'm not too late to this topic, id like to put forward something like this:

tvr-t350-others-S2057037-9.jpg

not a bad shout at all! I love the shape of the T350's and the interiors are just mental. I know bits will fall off it randomly and parts are probably not going to be the easiest to get but the shape! used to be able to pick these up for £17-20k but they've started edging up...

Love the big brother too, side exit exhaust? perfection

If you really want a 16 year old modified Nissan then go for your life but it wont be long before its up on ramps with oil dropping out of it .......... see also TVR, RX-7, 996T and anything "classic" ......... :stir:

I might be wrong but I took the Q as "You are just about to buy an R35 as a daily/road car, what other cars would you consider for this purpose?" rather than "What would you buy with £35K?", they are two rather different questions. Would you really have a DAX or a Mk1 Capri instead of a GTR to commute to work and back in?

Call me old fashioned but I keep a contingency fund of 2k in case anything goes wrong with my Zed, if I was to go for a £40k GTR then I'd have to up that fund to 10k, you can't run these things on a shoestring,

For the last few years the GT-R has been my dream car but about 12 months ago I realised I was becoming a bit 'meh' about them. I think a combination of me spending more time with older 300ZX's has made me realise that I prefer (the option at least!) of getting my hands dirty and that's no way an option with the GT-R. Unless I get a job at Litchfield :p I've also read many disappointing reports from people who have saved up to by an R35 only to be very disappointed with the lack of 'connect' between car and driver.

Strangely I've gone off them at a time when owning one isn't such a distant dream (I'm in the VERY fortunate position of hopefully having my mortgage paid off in 4/5 years so was thinking about one then).

I am however going to be driving one round Oulton Park later this year so maybe my mind will be swayed back again!

To answer the OP, if I had £35K to burn I would probably get an American muscle car but have it live alongside my collection of Japanese rust buckets ;) maybe I'll spend some of the £35k on welding lessons ;)

S.

PS don't forget folks - £50million jack pot on tonights lottery. If there was more time I'd suggest a 350z syndicate to up the chances of a win so we can ALL have a GT-R!

I nearly bought a GTR when I first decided to look at 911s back in late 2010 ... on that occasion I came out with a DB9 ... now, 5 years on and 3 cars later I have the 911 that I always wanted ... I guess I'm too old now to go round corners fast anyway (at my age the internal organs are not strapped in well enough) so the 911 suits me fine ... only regret I have is that I should have bought one years ago

Interesting that whilst there is a healthy amount of mixed views - wouldn't it be boring if we all felt the same?

Not one person suggested a new zed :)

I'm not much of a fan of the 370, so that rules that out. I did almost suggest just dropping loads of cash modding my 350 though :)

I was thinking of a new Mustang at first, but then I got to thinking, why not get more used car for the same money? I think that's at least part of the reason a Nismo 370z wasn't on the list, as petrolheads, we'd sooner have more car second hand than something brand new for the same money.

On any given day in the car park at work, all the cars within 10 spaces of me must have cost their owners more than my Zed, but no one goes up to the owner of a brand new Fiesta and says, "bloody hell, you must be earning a fortune buying one of those"
