Hi all and welcome along -

Today we are going to try DIY Powder Coating

I'm sure you have seen the thread on the refurb of ZeeAnnex

Well now that is complete I have the space to have a go.

I have become an "internet expert" by watching the videos, reading up on the different forums and talking to anyone that has had experience with powder coating and of course it doesn't mean that much until you have a go.

The basics you need are a Powder Coating system, a good way to clean the items and something to heat and cure the coating.

So I got the system

Then after much scanning of the free adds, gumtree etc I got an oven

But you know me - Think Bigger

Me and Buster are busy on the Mk 2 homemade oven big enough to take a 20" wheel

Then I built a booth

made a swivel hook at the top that connects to the negative side of the powder coater

I then picked a few parts to "practice" on, first stop the "Blast Chamber" (which is awesome well lit and plenty of space)

Had some gunk left to clean off

After blasting

Bottom bar has been wire wheeled as well

Next as they were in poor condition I pre heated everything which allows for out gassing, then I turned on the machine and powder coated them all - stuck them in the oven and watched very carefully

When they gloss over I left them in a further 10 minutes to cure (as per coating instructions) then out they came and onto the cooling rack

The finish - not bad for a first attempt :~)

Ha ha, nice work.

Can you do any colours ?

for any colour you want and cant get the powder in the colour or just a small part and not worth buying a box of powder for, you do a powdercoat primer fallowed by a waterbased paint in the colour you want followed by the powdercoat laquer

As rodgeevans said

In theory yes any colour - but some colours are more expensive, you can get any colour on the RAL chart - but again its finding a supplier a lot do a minimum order of 50KG and at £10 - £25 a KG that's expensive.

You can also have a colour match service in 5 days but it's actually cheaper to re-spray the car to match the powder coat

But for engine Bling and stuff like that its fine and a lot of off the shelf colours like blue, green, red etc along with additives like metal fleck and laquer.

Experiments will be conducted shortly.
