Talking about reasonable people running the forum, how many of you have actually met at least some of the members of the team?

I had a ban here in the very first months I've join the forum back in 2010 I think, for 7 days, for telling Beavis to go and die after calling me a Nazi. Looking back, it wasn't the best reply I could have came up with and I think the ban gave me a little bit of time to revise my attitude. Having met most of the forum admin team over the years, I would trust their decisions in running the forum without even the slightest hesitation.

You just have to spend not more than 5 minutes with the likes of ebized/Colin, glrnet/Graham, Wil370z/Will, martinmac/Martin, ionabe/Andy, ChrisS/Chris, Chesterfield/Chris, NeilP/Neil, Ian/Wasso and the others to understand how down to earth, friendly, reliable and trustworthy are. Not only that, but look at this forum and compare it with any other out there, really hard to see another place run at least as good as this.

Best way to experience this, come down to one of the meetings, like the Ace Cafe meeting next weekend! :)

My 2pence, as normal member here.

I also highly doubt banned members are given notice of an impending ban to "clear their desk" allowing them free reign to send abusive pm's, posts etc etc

You will have to take my word that when an established member (or trader) crosses the "line" team members go out of their way by way of pms and word of mouth to encourage them back off before formal warnings/temp & permanent bans are issued, so they do have time to prepare for their departure. Of course, on the rare occasion when someone has said/done something that could put the forum's reputation or legal position at risk, or they have been so abusive an immediate ban is necessary, then tough!

What is helpful is when you guys report rogue/bad posts - that include those from scammers/timewaster who often post when we are trying to get some shut-eye. I've lost count, during my time as a mod, of the hundreds of these we have banned and many who you guys do not see at all wanting to show us their porn etc (we have to keep some things for ourselves ;) ) or think they can come on and trade for free and when offered the chance to signup and don't and then find their time on here is short-lived.

Try going onto other car forums and see how badly they are run - GT4OC is a farce, all sorts of stuff going on there. Wasted membership money left right and centre, a trading section they spent ages setting up that doesnt work nor do they administer it. Its painful.

I dont think anyone is saying the staff dont do a great job and no-one is suggesting there have been any "unfair" bannings either, just that a bit of information wouldnt go amiss, and in a very few cases could actually be helpful in the future.

Ive also not noticed any of the staff telling us why they wouldnt want to reveal the name of someone trying to rip off the club or its members, that bit I really cant understand

Why is it anyone else's business why a member is banned other than the banned member themselves?

Fair comment, but why shouldnt it be our business as part of the forum when we have (perhaps) been interacting with them, the forum is as much about the members as it is the team.

Well I would say that if it was something that put other members at risk ie dodgy dealing then it would be up to the team to make an announcement. If it was for general abuse or such like then it's up to the member themselves to let people know what happened, if they are unable to because their only point of contact was the forum then I would say they are hardly a close friend

gave me a little bit of time to revise my attitude.

.........5 years and counting to be precise........

For me I agree with the whole sentiment of giving a reason.......right up to the point that it probably causes some sort of bloody legal debate regarding defamation of character

I never said they were

If you were friends with a particular member, i am sure you would know why anyway.

We are well aware the team does a good job and its nothing personal once again, just think keeping the members in the loop is in the best interest of the forum and its members, not just the team.

No surprise then that "You can't please all the people etc ..........." comes to mind. :headhurt:

Wise words, but i have to ask, whilst some members may not be bothered to have a statement, would they really be up in arms and displeased if a statement was made, this is where i am struggling, what harm would it do, the people who would like to be kept abreast are, the people who arent bothered still arent bothered?

Lets face it, the reason the information isn't open to the forum, is because the team doesn't want the grief and hassle of people complaining about the reason. I.e.

'WhackyWill was banned for mouthing off at such and such' Response being from the forum, But such and such is a dick, no need for the ban' or 'I've done trades with X plenty of times, never have I had not received and item etc'

Let's be honest, that's the real reason, you guys don't want to Ban someone and realise it was a mistake once debated throughout the forum.

That isn't a dig at the team, but that's the only reason I can think of, unless it really is a petty power trip that you want to keep this information to your self just for that.

As I said, not having a dig, just stating what seems obvious to me, yet know one wants to say it, but it's an open forum, if that can't be said then what can....

If those are neither the answers then why can't the real answer be given instead of, 'closed for discussion' That's just exacerbating things...

Curious about the pre-warning of the imminent ban and time to tidy up your PM's and dealings with trades.

Steve got banned, but was notified a couple of hours after his ban via an email. So he had no time to finish off any PM's that were going on to other members...

Now you could argue he's lying, I've not seen his emails etc, but I have no reason not to believe him.

The team don't just hit the ban button, members are contacted repeatedly over a period of weeks and if they choose not to respond what exactly do you want the Team to do?

I would suggest you put a bit more trust in the team on here and spend less time listening to your moaning chum.

Any member who is banned with pending transaction with other members . . all those involved are PM'ed privately . . so if your not involved you don't necessarily need to know.

its also worth pointing out . . you lot are only going on about this because of this thread . . . before then none of you batted an eye lid

For once (and it's taken about 6 years) I am going to disagree on that one mate.

This has come up many times and often threads that are turbo locked pop up asking where someone is or why they were banned.

Not being pernickety but it does dude.

As I said it doesn't really fuss me but I can really see where Doc is coming from and but i can also see why it would be potentially a bad idea.

Ultimately as it stands we don't create any ridiculous defamation law suits and anyone with enough nouse or forum mates with their ear to the ground will work it out.

I dont expect you to reply to this as youve already made the admin position clear, and trust me, Ive had more than my share of people questioning admin, but .........

A list of banned people may however help clarify if someone has just left or been removed which may answer some of your questions but any more information than that would definitely not be right.

I understand people want to know about this but really what value does it offer.

......... we operate in a community, and while most members will only use this board, there are quite a few that are on other boards as well, and Ive seen at least 10 or 15 guys come onto here after knowing them from elsewhere.

If someone is banned for dodgy selling, or making threats against another member then why shouldnt that be common knowledge?

If (for example) Whackywill turns up on the Babybmw forum and someone asks me about him, Im going to say hes a decent bloke, as thats all I know about him - if he then rips someone off for £200 on the basis of my word ........... likewise, if someone has been banned for threatening forum staff then it would be nice to know that before he starts doing the same on your forum.

Thats the value, there have been a few scammers that have done the rounds of all of the forums that may not have been so successful if people had been a bit more open. They have been banned for not following rules, why protect their dignity as well?

Thank you Doc, that is a very valid point and a good potential reason. What we are interested in is valid reasons like this, instead of reasons which come down to people being nosey.
