i wonder how much companys are going to be willing to buy into now that is changed and the viewership is uncertain.

Didnt Renault pay the BBC something like £30,000 grand for the twingo in ireland screen time, would they be willing to pay it again now?

I dont know any of the TV shows that you speak of (highlighted), maybe thats why we differ in opinion on this.

So basically youve never seen or heard him outside of anything other than The One Show, which he doesnt produce or have anything to do with the content of, and have never read his books? Do you really think youre qualified to say how good or bad he will be on TG, or whether he is actually a car enthusiast or not?

So basically, the 3 people that hated the last few series of TG, refused to watch or watched it and then moaned about how crap it was or how much time they wasted are now happy with Evans as a presenter (explains a lot). Soon it will be the other way around and I will be complaining about wasting a hour watching ;)

No, I think youll find that I said the last series of TG was the best in ages, I was gutted it got cancelled and that Clarkson shouldnt have been sacked as he was top drawer entertainment. Anything else youd like to be wildly inaccurate about while you are here?

I think if you are basing your opinions on Chris Evans of the last 5 years then you are missing the point really - as Dan said DFYT etc were TV defining shows, and he did it more than once on more than one media type, no mean feat.

In terms of the right man for the job he has all the credentials and I just cannot agree that he isn't the right guy in terms of being a petrol head or capable of producing a great entertainment show - thats pretty baseless looking at the evidence. It could fail because GTi man doesn't want to watch it, but that's also an assumption based on someone car collection from what I am reading above and nothing more, you dont even know what the content is yet.

As reading in the press today, he has already put out a tweet for ideas and someone suggested putting Clarkson, May and Hammond in the reasonably priced car which he has said yes to. I just cannot even consider the argument that he is going to arrive and turn it into 60 minutes of looking at cars in a garage and talking about the spec. It will still have entertainment value, anyone that has made hundreds of millions I would expect can see that.

When reading these comments about Chris Evans being a "car enthuast", is it just me who mentally changed the word "car" to "Ferrari" every time? :p

I really don't give a toss if he's a car enthuast, rich collector, Ferrari fanboy or just a label whore any more than his previous record in the genre of light entertainment, frankly. Largely because none of that is actually going to determine how good or bad the new Top Gear is going be. I'll wait to see what it's actually like rather than bicker over speculation. ;)

Id say that making 3 of the most popular light entertainment shows, the biggest commercial radio station of the last 20 years and the highest listeners for any radio show ever suggests he will probably have a fair chance at doing OK.

Chris E and J Leno are worlds apart. Chris E loves Ferraris, Jay Leno loves cars, CE is a collector/investor in a brand, that in my book does not make him petrolhead, but that is merely opinion.

The word presenter is an interesting one in this case and there is no denying he can present, so what happens now, he presents a feature but takes no part in it because he isnt really interested in driving or can drive with any enthusiasm? Who is going to do the car features? I am guessing there will be no more road trip style features?

So literally we may have one guy sitting in a studio "presenting", with two others doing the features. I never watched it for the presentation style or presenters itself, i watched it for the format.

Hes a producer more than a presenter IMO, and as well as the Fezzas owns Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a MkI Escort, a couple of Bentleys, a few race cars including a James Hunt F1 car ...... and what about Carfest, the CAR FESTIVAL that he organises each year? Have you read his books? No? Im surprised, really I am. :headhurt:

Anyway, we are comparing him with Clarkson who cant drive for @*!#, knows nothing mechanically speaking and is totally wide of the mark when reviewing cars as well ....... 350Z anyone?

Fair chance is not guaranteed though...

Regards female presenters, which seems to be an issue for some. I'm sure they will choose someone who they think will work and gel well.

Jodie Kidd can certainly drive, her presenting skills will improve. She has seemed very natural on other programmes I've watched her in.

Or it may be someone more experienced, VBH or Penny Mallory. Would be amazing if it was Louise Aitken-Walker or someone of the calibre of Michèle Mouton! Although she probably has better things to do with her time, like being retired

Why would i read a book about someone i have zero interest in and to be completely pc, i havent read JC's biography either who i like.

Why would you feel the need to comment on someone you know nothing about then? To be completely PC, I dont cast judgement on female porn stars, despite quite liking them .........

I have seen, heard and read enough about CE since he came onto out screens many years ago to be able say, i have zero interest in him, i havent been critical, i havent really cast judgement apart from an "opinion" on his petrolhead status, just he isnt my cup of tea. You seem a sensible chap with your posts, but really, you feel you have right to comment on someone you know no better than me because you have read a book about what he wants you to know about him? Sorry, that doesnt cut the mustard coming from you :)

OMG - I have not kept up with this thread since 4.30pm, only just back on - and you lot are still bickering over the exact same things you were then. !!! You could have all got together been constructive and put a show out in that time !!! Men !!! ;) ;)

So to add a little more .............

JC couldn't drive for a long time when he joined the show and had masses of instruction. Personally I still did not rate him as a driver.

As for which woman - I would like to see Vicky Butler Henderson at TG.

Having not watched TG for many years, I am looking forward to seeing it again, although Chris Evans - we will have to see if he has grown on me at all. I do not listen to Radio 2 - as I find his voice irratating and he shreiks and yells. I guess he might have grown up a little, so i will give him a chance.

As for good books .......

'The Mechanic's Tale - by Steve Matchett (Life in the Pit Lanes of F1) and for Sheene fans 'Barry' by Steve Parrish and Nick Harris.

I would recommend both.

I saw him on celebrity who wants to be a millionaire answering questions on behalf of some 'normal' guy and he just wasn't taking it at all seriously and basically just threw away the poor guys chance to win some serious money. Ever since then I've thought he was a level 10 kn0b.

I can't stand the thought of some random person being picked for one of the most prestigious TV shows in the world. They should be hiring the cream of the crop, not picking some knobhead just because every man and his dog feels they know a lot about cars and can do a better job. Here's a hint: You can't. Lots of people know a lot about cars, that's just fact remembering, but being entertaining & funny & likeable & able to present a TV show takes a HELL of a lot of work and experience.

I don't want TG does BB, thanks.

Do we forget TG is global, I do, I think of my own and UK viewing, the new rendition has got to globally succesful, who has heard of CE globally, let alone any of the other names bounded about. Sure when the trio started they werent known globally, but even more credit to them for succeding in making it that way.

Zig and Zag making a comeback, is one of them female or a minority?

So long as CE sheds the crowd of outraged, oppressed, "we have a hell of a time of it nowadays", "JC tells it like it is" (did he? ever? once?), "I can't say whatever I want anymore, what with the gays and the women and the asylum seekers", it'll be a giant leap forward for Top Gear. If they lose these viewers, great, a herd needs a cull every now and again. The more dinosaurs who get stuck in the tar and left behind for extinction the better the pool who aren't allergic to change will be.

Good luck to Evans, hopefully his arrival will mean there's one fewer (disproportionately loud) mouthpiece, faux-bleating on about the plight of the Middle Englander who's got it so damn tough now, as every other socio cultural demographic continues the glacial plod forward to redress years of imbalance.

That looks like another opinion to me, but whatever.

And I havent "just read a book", Ive read both autobiographies, watched BB every morning for however many years, loved TFI and watched it every week and saw most of Toothbrush as well. I now listen to the guy every morning on Radio 2 as well, and I think its a bit of a pisstake how many people are saying "hes crap, TG will be crap, I dont like him" without really having seen, read or listened to anything the guy has done. Maybe thats not your opinion exactly but theres plenty of people who seem to be writing the guy off without actually having seen any of his previous TV.
