Kwik Fit What a "Rip Off"..!

Hi All.

Last week I asked on the forum if anybody could recomend a garage in Sheffield

that would change the front pads on my sons Golf as that's all needed doing

without him getting ripped off as he's a Student living on his Student Grant. and the Bank of Dad.

Bounty Bar Kid suggested Kwik Fit, so I called them and discussed changing the front pads and

they quoted £75 inc vat, which is a bit over the top but they were close to him and could do it anytime

so I booked it in for yesterday. He dropped off the car yesterday morning for the front pad to be done.

He then got a phone call about 2 hours later saying the car needed extra work and could he pop back

and agree it before they went ahead. so back he goes to Kwik Fit to be told by a 17 year old kid that

he had done a completed brake report and that he needed new discs and new brake pads all around

and this would cost £392. 90 my son explained to him that it only needed front pads and that's what it was

booked in for, He was told that they would do ALL the work and refused to just do the front pads

saying "we will do all the the work or none of it"...!!!! WHAT A RIP OFF..!!

So he took ther car away, we are now back to square one and almost got ripped off by Kwik Fit,

I wonder how many old ladies they frighten into getting new brakes all round, a new battery, new exhaust

just to make a profit...WHAT A RIP OFF COMPANY..!!! SO WELL DONE KWIK FIT SHEFFIELD.

    Thats my "rant "over....Will.

Thats ridiculous.

Get him to look on youtube for a how to video and do it himself... its a **** easy job to swap your pads. I swapped the discs and pads on my Focus last weekend in about 2 hours, and that included the time it took to go out and buy them!

Some branches are better than others.

Surely you must have a local garage instead of a Kwik Fit? There must be thousands of them in Sheffield!

And a silly question: Are you sure it's just the front pads that need doing, and KF are wrong in saying that they all need doing?

I've not used kwik fit in a long long time because the one around here tried to rip me off. Not surprised to hear you had a similar experience. They do seem to like creating more work than actually needs doing. agree it's a fairly easy job but depends on your confidence to do it and having some tools.

Appreciate everybodys comments.

I forgot to say "Im in London and my sons in Sheffield"

and he is in Student accommidation and has no place

to change the pads except the roadway, he also struggles

to change a lightbulb..!!

I would do them if he was in London without any problem.

They always do it, once tried to tell me I needed new pads and discs on a set Id changed myself less than a month ago. Also failed to do up some wheel nuts properly, youre better off asking the guy who pushes the trolleys around Tesco carpark to fix your car IMO.

That's exactly what happened to an elderly colleague of mine, when he took his skodia fabia for an mot and service. I suggested he took it to my brother in law who worked at an independent garage at the time. Surprisingly all it needed was front pads.

The gentlemen returned to kwik fit to complain and there excuse was to highlight the fact that there was only around 8-9k miles left on everything and as most folk drive an average of 12k miles per year, they wouldn't last until his next service/mot.

I'm just going to throw this out there, but could it possibly be that the reason when you take your car to a place like this the only things they ever find that need replacing are the items that they 'specialise' in and can make money from!!!

Heard it time and time again, car goes for mot & fails on worn tyre, low pads, worn discs, leaking shocks etc.

Its well reknown that garages do this. I remember going to National Tyres to have them fit some tyres id bought onto my golf one year. As i stood there watching the guy, a lorry turned up and they unloaded hundreds of brake discs & pads. Next thing i know the fitter trys to tell me my golf needed new discs & pads all round once when I had only just changed them the week before myself.

You can get a full set of discs & pads for a golf on ebay for about £60. On the golf, the front pads are easy to change, ive done it more times than I can remember on golfs. You do need an allen key to undo the caliper bolts - 7mm if i remember correctly. You can actually buy a special allen key tool for doing this from a parts place. And thats it. Dont need anything else. Id expect just the pads alone to be about £15 if you are just changing them.

If he really cant do them then find a local garage. My mates just been quoted £65 including parts to have the brake pads on his focus changed at a garage near him.

Wouldn't give Kwik Sh*t the time of day quite frankly, in my experiences it has always been the customer groups that they see as having little motor vehicle mechanical experience as ripe for target, I know of students, females and two elderly folk who have been subjected to the same try on, in all cases the brake discs were fine!!!!! :bang: :bang:

I have a completely different view of my local Kwik Fit, they are great with me, mainly because i know and am good friends with every single guy that works there. The manager also owns his own professional valeting business specialising in Luxury and Performance Cars, which is where my 350z once i got it will be going. The manager also owns a Porsche GT3 which is always parked outside or on a ramp in there having the next piece of performance added.

I am very happy with my local kwik fit, recently had a battery on the mrs car usually £80, was also £80 in halfords, got it over the counter at kwik fit via the manager ;) for £55

They also checked the discs and pads while there on her car, and were told 40% left on back and 35% left on front with no pressure of having to buy any :)

I would get him to take it to a local garage. Kwik Fit are the last people I would go to do any work, let alone leave them with my car keys :scare: .

On a serious note, call the AA or RAC and they will hapilly recommend a good local Independant Garage to do the work.

One thing I will say though that brakes are a serious point on a car. If they all did need doing and only half of them were done, where would this have left Kwik Fit legally should an accident happen where the brakes were a contributing factor ?

i wouldn't trust kwik sh1t to put dustcaps on a valve; with the power of google i came up with these quotes from here http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/archive/index.php/t-158883.html

Bartram Motors, on Olivet Road at Woodseats. It's just a little two man business in a shed ... but they've always been very efficient

Gordon Road Garage, near Sharrowvale Rd. Hunters Bar.

D & L Autos off Rutland Rd have always been good

Try Guernsey Garage on Guernsey Road, 0114 2580615. It's at the back of Heeley Bottom, arcoss from Dunhelm. Alan's the mechanic. Totally reliable and very reasonably priced. I've been using him for 10 years now and wouldn't go anywhere else.

Have also used Snuff Mill in the past and only have good reports.

D.G. Autos who are about a 5 minute drive from Banner Cross.

They are at the end of Abbey Lane, on the outskirts of Woodseats and I have used them for years. Very honest, fair and competent.

0114 274 6472 is their number
