New Z confirmed by Nissan

I hate this whole shooting break trend! Every time a sports car is released you get folk adding on an ugly roof and the whole world thinking it looks better...

Its a real shame tbh as I'm starting to like the design. Remember it will prob get slightly tweaked between now and the final production version.

Maybe you guys can chime in but imo I think we are entering the beginning of the end for the entry level sports car in Europe at least with pending tightened regulations and the shift to "greener" power trains. Here are the options left within the sub £45k price range which includes lightly used 2nd hand purchases as well as new cars:

  • MX5/GT86/BRZ/Abarth Spider - Unpowered
  • Audi TT - Too common
  • Z4/Supra - Ugly
  • Alfa 4C - Discontinued, storage/practicality issues, not really meant to have miles put on
  • Alpine - A £50k car that looks like it cost £30-35k, unlikely to drop significantly due to numbers
  • Corvette C7 - Leftfield choice, LHD, prices just simply won't come down into the £35-40k mark until the car is a decade+ old old like the C6 gen so around 2025>

Leaves the Mustang, F type and hopefully the Lexus LC when/if it drops although they have recently crept back up having looked on Autotrader recently

I think now is a good time for 350z owners to get the 370z. For 370z Nismo Mk2 owners like myself it seems like the more likely route is to get a hot hatch or dare say it a bargain supermini/warm hatch. Been comp templating these as they have dropped in value. Again I dont really like to go for something that's too common really

  • Infiniti Q30 2.0s AWD - These get sold quickly when on the market around £15k low miles for a car that stickered £35k mark
  • Kia Proceed MY 2016/17 - Prev gen Proceed 2 door with the nicer rims. Seem to be a slow seller for dealers. 7 yr warranty
  • Swift Sport - Recently dropped as theres a hybrid version out soon. Still a bit pricey for the performance but is a bit different which I like
  • Megane RS Trophy - Only recently dropped to late 20s and were 5 months ago the price as GTI TCRs which themselves have stuck in the 30plus region
  • I30n - Eagerly awaiting to see how the new DSG facelift is. £20k mark and will go down to £15k come summer next year

Genuine question, but... why?

It's not 370Z prices have suddenly dropped, or like the 370Z has suddenly become more desirable. It's still no more of a "step up" than it's ever been, so genuinely intrigued to understand this thought process?

Yes should have clarfied prob more to do with styling then performance. Specifically with the for more recent 370z cars with tinted headlights. Still turns heads. I think the 350z has been showing its age now for while now. I wonder how low some dealers will go to shift the 50th anniversary models

The last few years have put the nail in coffin for Europe. 50 Z per month in EU nothing shout home about.

Also 350Z owners who havent looked at a 370 by now probably wont be interested. Its easier to just save your money and go for another brand.

With the Z Nissan dont have to do anything. Just leave the market to a bigger company like Toyota and a possible manual Supra incoming. Im not suprised to see 61 supras for sale with covid happening. Which means they initially sold quite a few.

It just means hold onto to what you got. Nissan struggled to shift 50th anniversary models

HPCs and Performance salesmen can either move companies or go back to selling SUVs at Nissan after 2022. The final year of R35 apparently

Personally I don't fell the 70z is a better looking car either. For me its much like the difference between visually the EP3 type r and FN2 type r and I feel that's how the 350z and 370z will be remembered in years to come.

I think the 350z has that timeless look to it, a more simplistic design less fussy but lets face it the ones on the used market have all these adds ons and modifications which take away from the elegance of the original design. Plus unless been garaged cars over 10yrs old just have that aged look to the paint. I think the dislike toward the 370z is due to the divisive boomerang lights but the body style is more stocky and muscular , beefy with less elegance. Regarding the lights i do think the more recent years with the tinted fronts/rears solve this issue to an extent.

Back to the sports car segment I should have added that I am not (yet) a fan of hybrid powertrains or engine downsizing plus all the fancy tech like cylinder deactivation, stop/start etc that is becoming more commonplace now. I feel like soon it won't be a choice to opt out

The warm/hot hatch market is a bit more optimistic to be fair in terms of the spectrum offering understated performance (GTI/R/S3), value (Focus ST/ used RS plus all the superminis) and flamboyance (Type R, N, Megane). Unfortunately I cannot say the same thing for sports cars

Mehhh personally I'd never touch a 350z. The 240z and the 370z are the best of the Zs in terms of aesthetics.

This new Z looks good, aside from the front grill, I'm happy with the look so far.

unless i missed it but as anyone noticed there is no rear window wiper

on another note, IF the new zed came with say a 2.0 litre twin turbo engine, which should bring it below the emissions level and it came to Europe would you be tempted, cost depending ?

Just a concept like the orange 350z proto that didnt have the wiper  - will get it added in final production form

2.0 unlikely imo as the car is even bigger then the 370z. Also I belive the 2.0 from the Q60s was sourced from Mercedes?

More interestingly, would you buy it if it had the 370z 3.7 unit in it!? lol

See it can be done, we just need to buy a few link them together with cable ties, pop a zed inside each one saving a fortune in shipping costs and flying the UK Club flag! Ha stick that Nissan.:yahoo:

Erm     can anyone speak or write Japanese?:bangin:

I can honestly say emissions (whether actual or the random number generator that is "laboratory testing") has always had, and will always have precisely f**k all to do with my decision to purchase a particular car.

TL/DR: No.

Well done Davey. Need more of that tbh. Ill do the same despite the obvious answer

I guess nothing official from UK head office. So the press must have got their news from the Nissan press officer.  Really and truly she should have point blank echoed the same statement as the press did but she didnt. So something's not right

Hmm ok in that case let's stick 'Vote for Trump' stickers on it, surely the pirates will just feel sorry for us and think ,' poor delusional sods have enough problems already' and sail on.

Not sure if we've already had this info so I'll quote it:

Speaking to journalists after the reveal of the Z Proto, Nissan Z, GT-R and Nismo product specialist Hiroshi Tamura confirmed a two-pedal option will be made available when the sports car makes it to production.

“Of course, we are going to have a two-pedal (version) and some appropriate performance,” he said.

Nissan has revealed the new Z car will be powered by a twin-turbo V6, though has not confirmed exact outputs or specifications.

If rumours prove to be true, and Nissan slots in the 298kW/475Nm 3.0-litre VR30DETT from the Q60 Red Sport, the automatic transmission will likely sport seven gears as it did in the Infiniti.

That's 405 bhp ! That'll do for me ! :drive1

Needs more power. Isnt the Mustang running 450hp nowadays? People in Stangs will still be outrunning it in US

Also the vr30 is down 50 ft lbs on the m2 competition and supra

Depends on how light they can make it, got to remember it is also sporting a 3.0 TT engine, so not a huge amount of headroom to ensure long term reliability / servicing.

Could probably eek out an extra 50 BHP from factory, but then you'd have R35 maintenance costs. What I'm more interested in finding out, is the drag coefficient of the new design compared to the 350Z and 370Z.

A bit more from the same article:

'As for a more potent Nismo-tuned version, Mr Tamura would not be drawn on the possibility, but said the market will decide whether a new version comes to market.

“This answer is why not … for me, if customers strongly request for the Nismo grade, why not?” he said.

“I cannot say yes or no (right now), it’s not clear.”

Timing on the production version of the next Z sports car also remains unclear, but Nissan has a track record of releasing near-production ready concepts like the Ariya, putting the 400Z on track for a 2021 launch.'

Having been in the club since 2007 (man and boy!) It's quite amusing to see exactly the same conversations about the Z-P as we did when the 370 came out? :D

Although I never owned a 370 I did look at buying a Nismo version but plumped for the Mustang for various reasons.

As 350 owners we complained about various aspects of the 370 yet in reality it's supposed to be a better handling better quality car than the 350? The 350 was a decent classic shaped coupe was priced well and caused a stir with this natty door handles and the scratchy interior which we moaned about but was actually pretty robust on the whole if a little dated as far as the radio package was concerned. But a damn solid reliable car.

The 370 was basically styled after a shark because the designer watched a TV programme about them ( what if he was into porn?!!) So everyone hated that grill and everyone started putting black vinyl on the lower lip to make it more GTRish but anyway people got used to it and the interior was a massive step up from the 1979 black plastic of the 350.

When the 370z replacement rumours started a few years ago, will it won't it, there is talk of a turbo, what a turbo how very dare they!

Anyway here we are with the new one and once again everyone is making very similar comments sadly times have changed, the world is different, greenies think we should drive milk floats now and everyone is playing catch up.

I agree with the previous comments this is the swansong of the classic coupe sport/gt car as we know it. All the German stuff is just getting so expensive and full of digital tech, I think it's lost its way to accountants and market research groups. Do you really want a slick looking coupe that can park itself, has 5000 digital toys to play with and will stop / start every time you stop at lights no I want a simple honest car with traditional good fun and handling. This is why the MX5 continues to be so good, it stuck to its basic recipe and is affordable.

I think the 350 is already heading to be a future classic, there are enough club members on here who did look after them, not all were modded to death?

My Mustang ironically embodies what my 350 did. It's not ground breaking but it's got soul which is what I think Zeds have and TT's and others don't. The German stuff drives so well is so precise it's kind of boring. The Stang will remind me who's boss sometimes but that may be down to the crap P zeros it came with. :D

Think mine is 425 or something but the newer ones are more then of course the special editions with silly hp!

I don’t this obsession with power. Unless you’re tracking it regularly it’s useless, and even then you watch on track how even an old 111R Elise sails past the big guys with billions of horsepower.

Trust me, even just 160bhp is plenty enough for the roads if driven properly when the car only weighs a ton. I have zero problems keeping up or even leaving behind (at points) a 500bhp Lambo, and I know the skill level of the driver very well. It’s all about how you use it, not how hard you can bury the pedal into the carpet on a motorway slip road.

While it is nice to use the entire rev range of an engine, most people won't dare take it past 3K RPM, so the power is needed down low. Diesels are quite good for this, and this is also why there are a lot of small turbocharged engines - emissions is another reason of course. Automatics partly solve this problem by taking away the control of the rev range from the driver.
