Fibre Optic Broadband

Well it's a tough job testing out BT's new fibre optic exchange... but someone has to do it...

For the last 18 months I have been road testing it at up to 140 meg but the engineer has just been round and upgraded the hardware in my comms cupboard and now it is ever so slightly faster :teeth:

Still completely free too for the next 6 months

I remember the days when I flashed Virgin modems for free internet access. I used MAC address from users near by and ran 20 Meg config files (Back then that was the most) I then ran 3 or 4 modems through a NIC car and got speeds like this.

That was free, for about 3 years. :)

Then Virgin updated to Nagra 3 :(

Holy Moly Dave, I thought I was getting a good speed with 80Mb! :surrender:

When the BT chappy was installing ours he did say they'd been testing 'super - duper' fibre for a long time and that it would change a hell of a lot once it all went fully live.

Yeah hopefully won't be too long, we moved into our place from brand new and luckily Gravesend Exchange is state of the art fully fibre optic so we don't have any copper wire, even the phone is fibre optic :teeth:

I am just happy to be testing it out for everyone...

So far...

HD Porn - Crystal clear and no annoying buffering

Gaming on Xbox / PS3 & PC all super duper smooth

Streaming over my network is fantastic, all my music and films are instant....

Anyone want to buy about 1,000 knock off DVD's :ninja:

Oh but then I have got the Evo T 4 mile up the road, so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts. :p:lol:

FTTP, very nice! I heard from a few people this is working rather nicely but is pricey to roll out as you need fibre to the door which isnt easy in most places.

I was going to test this for PlusNet like I did with FTTC, but they said I'd have to pay the FTTC prices for the trail as the price I currently pay for FTTC is a legacy product (only £11.49/mo and unlimited), so I decided that although a speed increase would be nice, the price I pay for 40Mbps is nice enough for me.

Maybe we should colo the club server to your house? :teeth:

I've had fttc for quite a while, Halifax were one of the first to get fibre surprisingly.

Only get around 40Mb though, but that was a big improvement over the 2Mb I was getting when using copper.

40Mb is the standard for first gen FTTC. I've had it for a good couple of years now and its been flawless since we got it. Quite surprising for BT
