Choice between a Cayman S or BMW M3

have to agree with sarnie on this, if its only a weekend toy i'd be looking in the TVR cupboard; if i had the cash spare for a toy i'd want it to be something that makes me smile when i go for a blast. the M3 and the cayman are great daily's but for a weekend toy i;d want more.

like tvr as we all know something is bound to happen.

You don't know this, it's an unknown variable.

The Mrs has has an Alfa Romeo for the last two years, and guess what? It hasn't gone up in flames, or broken down once, contrary to popular opinion ;)

Your choices are faaaaaar too safe for a weekend car. As biscuit says, the cars your looking at are great for doing 12-15k per year in. If your going to be doing a few K a year then get something special, or just keep the zed and buy an Akpro exhaust etc which you can sell on rather than loosing it on a Cayman/M3.

Don't forget on cars of this price, buying from a dealer your going to be paying about £2k in profit. Your £28k from a dealer is only actually worth about £26k. Once you start driving the car and adding the mileage, in 12 months you'll be getting trade bids of less that £20k, irrespective of the mileage. The rarity of 350z's/370z's have kept their residuals fairly strong but as Cayman's and M3's are ten a penny, your going to take a huge hit imo.

Remember this will be my weekend toy as will have the Navara soon enough :) Well someone on here has made me a good offer on my 370z sooo it got me thinking and these are the only two cars that I like within my budget. But what people think of me because of what I drive doesnt really bother me if am honest. Come on we drive nissan's lol people see that as a poor mans tt  I will let you guys know how I get on with the cayman s tomoz.

Just because someone offered you good money for your car, does not mean you have to take them up on it. Are you not enjoying the 370?

I agree with the above that for just weekend fun, the Caymen, and more so the Beemer will bore you before long.

For a 28k weekend toy, there are many possibilities  I think a Cobra would be near the top of my list B) I see Nobles are coming down in to that price range, you can also pick up some nice Fezza 348's and 308's for that money.

A Griffith 500 would be a good shout, they really don't seem to depreciate and in my opinion is such a looker.

I know TVRs do get a bad rep regarding their reliability but lets face it, they aren't great. A good friend of mine worked in a TVR dealership years ago and said it was just ridiculous how many would come back with faults on the back of AA trucks.

But for that v8 sound its got to be worth it. :teeth:

Caymans just don't do it for me. M3 on the other hand.... :cloud9:

Agree with sarnie tho if ur being sensible with buying a house soon ur gonna take a big hit on either of the 2

But from behind, they're so dull. It just looks like a 335, even the front on the standard m3 you've shown aside from the wheels looks dull.

Cayman looks much better and they seem to handle well on track too. Not quite in the same league as a 911 though.

To be honest if your worrying about £400 extra on the insurance then I would think again....

I wouldnt say I am worrying Dave.. but I am going to pay alot more for a 911 and then have the usual outlays. So I am trying to be sensible and add things up before I just jump in and buy something

Maybe worrying was the wrong word, how about concerned?

What I meant was think about why you are buying what you are looking at.

Are you thinking residual value, running costs etc then possibly not the right move

Are you thinking once in a lifetime opportunity to own a special car before you are too old and crusty to properly enoy it.... then stuff the expense and go for it, you can't take it with you!

Yeh mate, I am not worried too much about residual value, as I will only have the car for about 2 years... running costs in caymans wont be that diffo compared to the 370z. So yeh.. thinking to myself.. why not get myself a bloody nice car before I am married and have kids.... as realistically I wont be able to do this again till I am a bit older

Morning update. Picked up the cayman this morning and I fell in love with its looks, however I must remember this is not the car I would be gettin as this one is newer and has some nice toys B) One thing I noticed straight away is how refined the cayman is through the gears.. it does it with so much ease whether the 370z is just a big brut. Was hoping to take it out for a proper drive but it is seriously bucketing down... so wont have as much fun as I had hoped :(

Anyway here is some pics :)

Weird forum this sometimes, we all have "drivers cars", he was asking about two of the best drivers cars you can buy and half the replies are about what people would think of you and whether youd be let out of junctions

Id have personally said try both and see what you think :)

As a weekend car the Cayman is the better choice for me, you really need to consider IS-F, XFR and C63 up against the Bimmer as well though :)

LOL, I am glad you noticed this aswell mate. I am not keen on the ISF and feel the xfr is a little old for me  I really like the c63 but doesnt fit in my budget .

My brother (32) is trying an XFS atm in place of his E Class and although its lovely he really needs to be another 20 years older I reckon :D

Keep us updated with how you get on with the Cayman, it strikes me as one of the obvious upgrades for those of us that continue to avoid having kids ;):D

Morning update. Picked up the cayman this morning

Is that not a debadged R? Can't see the inside to tell for sure, but it's got the Spyder wheels and the spoiler, and the black wing mirrors...

Nope it's a cayman s with some kind of body kit the salesman said as I asked the same thing

Just had a quick browse in your price band, just quickly picked the well knowns, must admit there is a lot of choice; but if it was me and only a weekend toy for the next 2 years, i'd be looking at the noble m12 or the TVR cerbera or Tuscan. didn't put them up but an exige would possibly go ont there as well.

But if you like the porsche and it ticks the boxes and gives you the safety net your looking for then its up to you. but i wonder if the same thing will happen to it as has with the 370. nice car but i wish it was more type thing.

as you i too have a porsche itch, i also have an alfa itch and a TVR itch. i'm currently happily sratching my V8 intch and my supercharger itch both at the same time. but i don't know what i'll do next. i'm seriously contemplating a 2 car setup where i do the alfa as a daily car and get a caterham or similiar for track fun and weekend hooning.

Cheers for that Rich... really appreciate it mate, will have a wee browse after I have dinner. Well I just handed the car back... I am really unsure... it looks great... but is basic compared to the 370z inside ( I forgot to take pics sorry) but the main thing that bothered me was the lack of noise when I put the foot down....I am a very confused scot at the momemt
