HEADPHONES Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Today I learned that a 2008 BMW 335i has no dipstick. And there was me thinking Nissan did a bad job of designing the dipstick on a DE.........but at least we have one! Call me old fashioned but I like the idea of checking my oil every couple of weeks :b Quote
Ekona Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Same as my old 911, and I hated every second of it. Electronic oil measuring is a complex way of doing something so simple, and I trust my own eyes over a gizmo any day. Quote
un1eash Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Common across the range now, my M140i B58 didn't have one and neither does the the B48 2.0i Quote
davey_83 Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Then there's you process for topping up allowing the ECU to detect what you've done lol do it wrong and the display just keeps asking for oil Quote
TomBorehamUK Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Yep, my 2013 335i is missing a dipstick, I'm not a fan Quote
docwra Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Its @*!#, I had to replace my level sensor (its also the temp sensor) and the level bit isnt working, so I dont know how much is in the car. Even when its working it doesnt give a reading until warm. To replace sensor again you either have to run vacuum through the whole block or replace the oil. Again. Quote

You have to warm the car up before it then tells you theres hardly any oil in it. To be fair though, it uses hardly any oil, so I do only check it every now & then - usually when im stuck in traffic! Paul K Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 my Jag XF doesn't have a dipstick...all electronic Quote

Me too but I think mine works slightly differently from the Turbo in that it has to be warmed up but then switched off, left to rest, and then measured at idle - even more inconvenient ! Quote

Ekona Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Yours a 997.2 as well isn’t it Hugh? That’s what I had to do with mine, run to operating temp them leave at idle for 5 mins, or whatever time it feels like telling you! Quote
ATTAK Z Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Yep 997.2 ... fortunately doesn't use oil Quote
Ekona Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Bizarrely mine used a ton of it when I first got it, but after a while it stopped. I'm putting that down to the previous owner never really using the full rev range, and me... well, me definitely using it all! Quote
Ebized Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Think yourself lucky you can at least still see the engine - but at least I am enjoying confusing the non-petrol heads by guessing where it is on the Cayman. 1 Quote
Ian Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 There's usually one behind the wheel My Audi A5 has no dip stick either, its annoying, how am I supposed to know how much to top up when I need to top up ffs Quote
un1eash Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 Bmw tells you how much you should add. Quote
shaunRS Posted December 15, 2018 Posted December 15, 2018 hated that on my m3. Although the electronic one was pretty accurate its always good to be able to have a look yourself, especially on a car that does use a lot of oil. Quote
