To be honest, compression checks only goes so far, most failures i see are water seal issues (head gasket equivalent). Which unless it already on its way out you will have no idea its going to happen and when it goes it goes quick. I took a guy out for a test drive in one of mine i had for sale, it was mint and went beautifully, as i stopped at a cashpoint for him to get a holding deposit it turned into a steam engine, water seal failure. It was literally perfect one minute, not the next They arent as bad as people make out but they do require tlc and also, they like to be driven and driven hard each time you go out. Imho they are not expensive either, rebuild is £3k ish for an engine that will easily cope with 500+ hp, how much to build a Zed engine to cope with that hp? Try Hayward Rotary, he will be able to find something if he hasnt go it already and will put it on his ramp so you can see the all important chassis condition. Good luck, there is a load of help out there with V8 builds too now

Probably not as noticed you were on later that day as thought it was odd you hadnt checked back To answer you questions imho: If your ripping the engine out i wouldnt worry to much about who has build it and when, even selling a good engine 2nd with a reputable builder tag is hard work these days. Andy, Me, LMC all have broken their Rx7's for spares, i would very much think Guy would too if it wasnt a 2001 model. Hopefully that tells you all you need to know about prices. I have to be honest, i havent seen many whole cars sell recently (especially expansive ones), the ones that are advertised for £9k will sit there for ages with the price coming down and down. Only late spec 99+ can command a decent price tag. I think the world is your oyster if your putting a V8 in one as its really only the engine condition that commands any sort of price at the moment. I think its great we all like different cars for different reasons I have as probably everyone does some very wealthy friends, some of them are polar opposite on what they like and their budgets are immaterial. One loves Lambos the other a Ferrari man, the guy who likes Ferraris also loves his Mercs/Audis, the other Porsches/BMW's. One of them sold his 360 Challenge Stradale to buy a GT3 after a month, both equally as fine handling but he wanted to get back in a Porsche as he preferred the branding. You couldnt get two more avid petrol heads, their budgets are just very different to ours so all options and brands become available. When you have that capacity open to you, you are buying a car on looks and brand alone so of course there is brand loyalty and preference. I always remember when the SLK55AMG was picthed against the Boxster S, two very different cars (engine/handling), with very similar outcomes. My sister had a new SLK55 and a mate a new Boxster S, i was lucky enough to have full use of the SLK and i just loved it, we swapped for a trip out once, i could not wait to get back in the SLK and my mate couldnt wait to get back in his Boxster. I really enjoyed the way the Boxster drove, far more precise than than the SLK, but it didnt give me that special little tingle you just cant explain and i have found that with any Porsche i have driven/been in and also Audi to be fair and i have had the pleasure of driving quite a few, RS4 (turbo and V8 versions), V8 R8). So in essence, no i dont like the Porsche badge, mainly because owners seem to constantly want to tell me i am an "idiot" for example because i dont like them!

This subject genuinely interests me as i am in exactly the same camp as you, i have absolutely no doubt the Cayman is the better car, infact any Porsche i have been in and or driven is a great drive, but they do absolutely nothing for me, curious as to why as even i have no idea

So why dont you buy a comfortable, economical and practical saloon and be done with it then? You may disagree but the point of 2 seat sportscars is to give a sporty and involving drive, this is something that the Cayman and GT86 both do better than a 370, the Cayman can do continents just as easily as well. And theres no denying that the Cayman and GT86 are direct competition for the 370 - the Cayman is £2K more than the Nismo 370, the GT86 is £2K less than the "normal" 370 and they are both impractical, driving focused vehicles, you cant say they arent competition because they do stuff better. The Zed might be absolutely perfect for what you want, but for an "average" buyer you will probably find that the 86 and Cayman are better received, hence Harris's review findings. I didnt suggest they werent better or a more sporty or involving drive, i just suggested (reading between the lines) the Zed is perhaps a happy medium between between sporty and involving and real time road driving and in reality if i wanted an all out 2 seater sports car for an "involving and sporty drive" i would not have a zed, cayman or gt86 As with the Astra thread, there are better cars than the both Zeds, there is no denying it, but it doesnt mean because there are better at a particular trait its the only car to choose Also he wasnt testing against a Nismo 370z so whether its £2k less than a base unspecced Cayman is neither here nor there! All depends on what priority which boxes are the most important to tick.

I will echo a lot of the other comments, i think his reviews are good, he comes across as a petrolhead and we can relate to how he drives, but he is a massive Porsche fan boy, no problem with that by the way each to their own, but he is very biased towards them. If driving was as you saw in the review you probably would have a gt86 or cayman but in reality when do we ever get to drive like that and if you do on a regular basis, your either very fortunate to have the roads you can do that on or your taking risks, not a good idea. There is a time and place and invariable these days its not on the road. Lets get another scenario going here, your out for a drive, a vast majority of that time you will encounter traffic you want to get pass, 110lb of torque and 200 ish bhp is going to get you nowhere fast, now which car would he prefer to be driving, a gutless fine handling chassis gt86 or something which can you make headway in, safe in the knowledge that you probably wont get anywhere near its failings on the roads in general. Plus he is a very talented driver, most of us wouldnt get near finding the last few 10ths! I also think its totally unrealistic putting a Cayman S that was what, £40k+ plus new, against something much much cheaper, its only cause of all the other pistonhead porsche lovers making comments who think they are the pinnacle of motoring, at any given chance on there, someone always says, ah yeah, but you can get a Porsche "whatever" for £"x" or thats Posrche "whatever" money!

Personally i think there is a bit too much of a fuss made about the subject on here, i dont reckon 99.9% of the members on here would notice a difference if they didnt know what the car had on, certainly front to rear if the tyres were an equal quality. My 350 had mixed fronts on at the only track day i managed to get to this year, they were equally as bad but there really wasnt anything untoward going on. In an ideal world i would want matched fronts but front to rear really isnt something to be too concerned about imho

I agree with some of the others, so long as you have some aftermarket wheels with a polished lip it works, but if its rays painted black it doesnt as there is nothing to break the black up and just looks like you have sprayed them with a rattle can Most colours work on a black car to be fair, you dont have to be quite as fussy as to pick something that goes with a bold colour

It is something to do with stock or lack of and pricing, when it comes back to stock the price goes down.

Isnt that the case for every Porsche, every car they make takes its major styling cues from the 911, their styling approach is staid and bland, again in my opinion. I thought the Carrera GT was a good break from the norm and looked good, in fact, this 918 looks like a more rounded softer looking version of the GT.

I think the CGT looks awesome and same goes for the SLR, just in a different way. I never thought the LFA looked pretty, just purposeful and in reality for me, the colour had a massive effect on how it looked. Its a fruitless discussion anyway, as it is opinion based (as mentioned), what looks good for one might not for another, that is the great thing about cars

I did see that, as usual very well put together review and i have no doubt its seriously quick (ring time etc) and very very well engineered but in "my opinion only" and in comparison, it looks dull as dishwater compared to the P1 and if i had that kind of money burning a hole in my back pocket i need a visual stimulus as much as a driving stimulus. I would also imagine between the three, Ferrari, Porsche and Maclaren the times will be within a few tenths of each other (around a track) and way beyond the average or even good drivers abilities so the only thing it comes down to is looks, thats if you even could buy any of them as think they are all sold out, i know the Maclaren is for sure.

I am not so sure Its such a bad price, its certainly equally as good/better looking as similar cars in that price bracket, will most likely perform as well, return better mpg, so what lets it down, spec? Real shame it didnt get to go round the track although with the recent weather it would have been a wet time. I know its carbon everywhere, but sub one ton, thats awesome, my mk1 mx5 bbr turbo was about the same with 150 ish hp, bet that 4c is fast! I do hope the P1 beats the 918, such an awesome looking thing, could not believe just how quick he was saying, 150, 160, 170.............

Still a £4k saving, lol. I have never known a replica to fit like an original (i dont mean oem). I went through quite a few different front bumpers in my rx7 days. Some ranged from needing a tweek so the saving was justified and the worst would have ended up costing me more to correct than an original so was sent back. Any original RMagic, Mazdaspeed etc pretty much fitted like oem. So long as you can buy and fit a replica for less than its original counterpart its worth doing, but because of my experience, unless there is universal praise surrounding its quality, i avoid replicas.
