"Performance car" action day at Castle Combe (Video & pics) 25/04/15

Not sure if anyone else from here attended this but today I went to Castle Combe for the "Performance car" action day.

 

It was a great day out albeit a little "chavy". :lol:

Still there was lot's of action to watch on track including some drifters and the odd Zed.

 

There was a whole host of car clubs there and lot's of different makes but mainly Fords, VWs, Subarus, Mazdas, Mitsubishis and the odd Audi.

Tbh I only saw three 350Z's, one 240Z and one R35 GTR so a pretty poor showing from Nissan although I did also spot a Micra in the car park but I'm not counting that one. :D

This one below was on airbags I'm sure as otherwise he'd have had to have the Zed brought in by helicopter drop as it was so low. :scare:

Also spotted some, shall we say interesting wraps on a couple of Audi R8's. Ignore the women ~ atleast I think they're women. :surrender::lol:

So the main reason for me going to this event was to get the Zed on track for the first time. It was only £35 pre-booked so I thought I'd give it ago.

 

I decided to take it "fairly" easy as it was my first time on track in the rwd Zed and last thing I wanted to do was crash it for the amusement of the watching crowds. Also Castle Combe has recently been resurfaced so I was just finding out what the grip levels were like after that ~ much better is the answer.

I did let a few people pass who seemed to be hell bent on overtaking in the corners even though we were told not too and some people driving stripped out sheds (blue Ford Escort being the main offender ~ gave him a wide birth).

Saw 128mph down the main straight the one time I looked and my quickest lap was 1min 27secs from timing it off the video afterwards so not a bad average speed of 75mph.

Oh and my car with the Invidia Gemini exhaust system & Berks De-Cats registered 92Db @4.5K rpm from 0.5metre which passed the sound regulations but when I came in after being on track I was told I had registered 101Db as I drove by the pit lane so was told it was too loud. :nono:

They re-checked it and when I revved above 5K rpm it was close on 105/7Db from 0.5metre away. Luckily I only wanted to go on the once. :rolleyes:

I saw a gun metal one on the track and thought Hmm he's taking it easy 3rd lap in he really started opening the taps after quarry rise. Once up in the higher revs the zed sounded glorious.

 

I'm going. To assume that was you... I moved down to the straight after quarry rise to get some video footage but by the time I got there the session was up. My zed was there too. Didn't Track it. Too scared!

We had three Nissans on our Clubstand , two r33's and one 370

 

Saw you on track , looked like you were having fun

Totally missed that as I didn't see a 370Z at all that day.

 

What was the Clubstand?

Great little vid and getting quicker and quicker with each lap :)

 

Got to grow some soon and get on track with mine ...... Just worry it will show up all the flaws with my road set up suspension and tempt me into coilover etc !!

Yep that's the safest way to do it.

Build up the speed gradually as everything (tyres/brakes) gets up to temperature nicely and you start to find your limits.

 

It was also the first time I'd used the Zed on track so needed to gauge how the car handled the fast bends as well as how much grip was available with my tyres & the new surface at Combe. Last time I was on track there was 7-8 years ago and it was in a fwd Mondeo ST24 so a totally different animal. ;)

Yep that was probably me. Supposed to be in a 12:45 session but it was more like 1 o'clock by the time I was on track. ;)

 

Pity you didn't get any video as I would of liked to have seen that.

My Mrs did film from Camp corner but it was with my mobile phone so is shockingly bad footage. :scare::lol:

you just assume is a v8 ... might as well be a v10 ... great looking cars!

Look at the blades: They're the V8 ones. It needed the bigger blades for the bigger intake/cooling requirements for the engine. The exhaust tips can be changed, but no way you'd put the smaller blades on.

Having checked the specs (not being an R8 geek :teeth: ) the exhuast on the silver wrapped one is a bit of a giveawy that it is a V8 as they are hardly likely to have changed the V10 tips, as on the adjacent car, to V8 tips :lol:

Only very brief but you can hear that V6 wail, That was the point I decided to move to the straight instead.

Even though it was brief you can still nicely hear the V6, ...even over all the other cars & tyre screeching. B)

 

 

Very surprised the Escort wasnt black flagged, they generally dont like that kind of driving, maybe as it was one session they didnt have time.

He was on at least 3 different sessions from what I saw of him so that's why I didn't understand why he wasn't pulled aside for his driving. It was a really busy day though for track laps and seemed a little undermanned to me. :dry:

 

Oh well at least I & everyone else seemed to avoid coming together with the rust bucket. ;)

The escorts hooned around drifting all day, no one stopped them. An old BMW did the same and nearly caused a couple of accidents and even had an off.

 

Driving like that puts me off standard sessions

Totally agree their driving was dangerous at times but unfortunately for whatever reason they got away with it. :dry:

 

I think next time I do a track day I might have to just stump up a bit more cash and do a proper one like Keyser/Ekona/Brillo/Ken etc do. Probably be more fun then anyway. :);)

Just to add, well I said it was a bit "chavy", ....just noticed two of my Rota center caps have been pinched so that just goes to prove it. :dry:

 

Unlikely to have happened here last night where I live so must of happened at Combe whilst the car was parked up. :scare: Bl**dy thieving scum. :rant:
