twobears Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Does anyone honestly do this when driving a normal (non vintage car) on the roads? I have a reason for asking Quote
Gudzy Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 For those with a stiff second gear it can help to get the gear in, personally its not something I do. Quote
Bockaaarck Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Nope, no reason to do it, especially in a modern car with synchromesh. I imagine all you would do if you consistently did this is to depress and use the clutch twice as much as you need to, potentially leading to risk of excess wear and tear 1 Quote
ace Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 tha'ts why we have synchromesh gearboxes so we don't have to double clutch! 1 Quote
AliveBoy Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 there was a debate on this a few weeks back, consensus is nope 1 Quote
ZMANALEX Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 If you want rev matching then just heel and toe. 2 Quote
rabbitstew Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Half the time i never use the clutch anyway when driving. You can tap it out of gear just by easing off the throttle, then if you get the revs matched right, it will slip straight into the next gear. Quote
twobears Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Thank you everyone for confirming that there is about as much use for double de-clutching in today's world as there is for black leading grates!! I can now confidently call someone a silly old f*** or similar. Alex, I think heel and toe was the thing I was supposed to be learning next if I had kept up with the track sessions but that has all come to an end now, sadly Quote
Bockaaarck Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Now I rev match all the time Annie, it's just force of habit now. However I don't heal n toe all the time, only when 'making progress' Quote
twobears Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 'Making progress'? What's that then? Love from Miss Marple Quote
cmck13 Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Done this as a young man with an old 50's Standard Ten, no need since mid 60's Quote
evilscorp Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Only do this when dropping down gears for an overtake, more for the noise and less chance of jerking the car about I feel. Quote
NeilMH Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Done this as a young man with an old 50's Standard Ten, no need since mid 60's My first car - 1958 Standard 10 Last time I double de-clutched was probably on a 1958 Series 3 Hillman Minx. Subsequently discovered that the main reason for my gear changing problems stemmed from the fact that they bracket holding the change assembly to the chassis had become detached - it wasn't the only thing that had become detached. The MOTing garaged refused to move it from their car park, saying it was too dangerous. I sold it for £7 on the condition that I delivered it to a house in Oxted. My only excuse was that I was a penniless student. 1 Quote
Ebized Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Yep, absolutely no need.......... ..........the 370 does it for me, spot on every time Quote

NeilMH Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I still get my mangle out on a frequent basis. Quote
twobears Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 You get your mangle out regularly? In public? I think that should remain between you and your therapist! Quote
