Cecil the lion

They're ****s, end of.

1 is making a living out of it, providing the population with food.

Another is just a **** killing a creature because he can.

The new Jurassic park sums it up pretty well, where the hunter basically wants to prove he's the alpha.

Pathetic, I wouldn't show a sign of remorse if something bad happened to them.

At the end of the day, Animal lovers are going to understand this, where as everyday people/non pet fans aren't going to be too fussed by it, and pull out the Farm/Food card.

Providing the population with something they don't need? Profiteering, greed, selfishness, cruelty and suffering are OK as long as you can justify it by wrapping it up in a nicely presented little box with a bun and some salad?

I don't think many people would eat meat if they followed the product from birth until it ended up on their plate. But hey, that isn't plastered all over the newspapers and given a cute name so why would you care. Personally I try not to think about it because I like eating, ignorance is my excuse.

But it's very hypocritical to bring the hate upon someone for harming an animal when pretty much everything we do harms animals.

Pulling out the pet lover card is absolute horse shite and shows very poor, emotionally charged irrational thinking. "If you don't agree with me it's because you don't have pets or don't care for animals"... Yeah, alright.

The is a lot more wrong in the world than 1 man shooting a lion but i think its quite sad that it takes this to trigger a such a big reaction and movement from people and not the other horrific things going on in the world

I think we all know that social media outrage is directly proportional to how cute the victim in question is. No one wets their pants when you eradicate a living Ebola virus or bats an eyelid when they call the council about rats eating a kebab outside their front door, tell them they're having guinea pig for dinner and they vomit up their grande skinny mochachino frappe, fire up their Laptop and start making memes and issuing death threats.

i dont think anything of it, i may sound crude but i genuinely dont care, it dont affect me in anyway, i have no idea about game hunting, i have no interest in the matter all i know is that 90% of my friends on facebook have all of a sudden all became david attenboroughs! everyones a nature specialist now. it will all blow over, its all media hype, like KONi 2012, anyone remember him? no not really, ebola? where the **** did that up and leave to. this guy will be in the news a few days and everyone will hate him until the next big cover up story.

This is my issue with the whole situation, Where are these people when Billy Bob is out hunting deer with his pals? Once they have been out on there little protest parade spray painting killer on the persona property etc, they go home cook up a bacon sarnie put there feet up and chow down as the news talks about the local child sex ring or loads of innocent people killed by isis and dont bat an eyelid, Its like people playing the racist or sexist card only when it suits that @*!# pisses me off

FTFY, Stu. Because what better way to show your utter disdain for the needless murder of an animal than issuing death threats?

In the 1940s there was 450,000 Lions in Africa, today there's about 20,000. Considering there's only 4 Northern White Rhinos left in existence I think we should be acting a little earlier with lions:

oh i agree but why does this person have to pay the price and not the 430,000 before him? is it because the lion was given a cute name

I didn't say anything about if I thought the dentist was a tw@t or not or if the reaction was justified. ;)

The underlying trend to this story and all others involving the killing of protected animals, pets or using dogs for fighting is the growing disdain and lack of respect for animals which I feel is shown by a large minority of the human race. As the superior species on the planet man should be trying to co exist with nature not destroy it.

Most animals for food, chicken, cows even dogs in China are bred for food so why get all teary eyed about it and insist they are freed, if it wasn't for the demand they wouldn't even exist

I would class myself as an animal lover and animals seem to love me too, I think they can tell if that's possible. If I was Chinese I am sure I would scoff a big dog steak or a cat burger and not think anything of it, wouldn't make me a bad person as I don't give a crap about the chicken that was bred so that I can have my dinner tonight...

How the hell did that journo manage to turn the story into a rant about immigration, and people not caring about people? Imbecile.

I care a ton more about animals than I do about people. So what?

A media fuelled frenzy, as mentioned elsewhere I am sure lions are shot every day, much the same as the two lads in the Seat where we have empathy being car enthusiasts as they were, but people die every day on the roads and its not even reported.

Why anyone would want to shoot a lion is beyond me however, magnificent creature which I would much prefer to see alive.

Isn't this just a case of the 'perfect' mixture of circumstance enforcing a whole number of stereotype, therefore the media love it....

Rich caucasian male from the first world, goes to the third world, 'lures' a nationally recognised animal out of its 'protected' habit, and than kills it with a bow and arrow before finally putting a picture of him self with the dead animal on social media....

I mean come on, what else could you want as a journalist. Social injustice, animal rights, hints of 'imperialism', and lots of photos....If the guy had been a lawyer from Dallas, and than tried to bribe some local officials to cover up the story I suppose that would have made it 'perfect' from the reporting aspect :)

Last sentence sums it up for me.

The world was a better place with the lion in it, not least because he was part of a long running research project and his death will apparently have a bad impact on the rest of the Pride.

Or the young lad that died in Bexleyheath from a drug cocktail of legal highs... who actually had a heart condition and could have died at anytime but hey that story wouldn't sell any advertising space would it

The thing I love about this story is that, this sort of thing has probably been happening for years but who cared? Secondly, this story seemed to get more and more dramatic as the day went on. First he paid $35,000, then it was $50,000 and to top it all he killed the " most famous lion in Africa " and with a bow and arrow. Tomorrow they'll probably report that the bow and arrow he used was made from the bones of Ethiopian orphans and he admitted to doing it for sexual kicks. The dentist has now gone into hiding for something he " thought was a legal hunt ". Whatever the reason, how long will it be before YOU do something that turns you into a human punch bag? Not that I support killing animals for fun but it all seems pretty small-fry for news IMO.
