REG PLATES or....Lack of Plastic

As anyone had experience of using just vynil registration plates without the clear perpex plates. Just stuck onto the bumper. Ill be fitting my Amuse Style front end shortly and was thinking about sticking the plate either where it is now or at the bottom section facing slightly out but certainly up. Whats the law regards to sicker number plates. Back in the early eighties it was in fashion to stick em on our rally prepared escorts on the bonnets. lol ah the days!!! :)

Also at the same time was thinking of using the import size letering as these plates are generally smaller. Can I do this with a UK car???

thanks

anything other than standard lettering sizes with standard lettering spacing on a UK is illegal.

That said, I ran a tiny plate (about half the size of a normal plate) on my old 300zx, and looked awesome. I was never pulled over for it.

The plod would have to be in a particularly foul mood to pull you over just for the plate, especially if its got the right font type (obviously no silly italics poncy brushstroke lettering), more likely he'll stop you for your driving styles first, and then while hes got you by the side of the road, examine your car for legality of number plates, tints, tread on tyres, loudness of exhaust and so on.

are they though? dads got one on his Etype? unless its a different rule for classics?

Quoting from the E type forum, the E type is unique in that it is the only car to have confirmed approval from the dvla to have a stick on front number plate. The owners club have a copy of the document for any MOT centre etc that might question this.

I don't believe it's documented anywhere that the plate has to be plastic. Just states reflective standards to be met and lettering/font details/spacing etc.

im with you Kyle. Oh well. Looks as though Im gonna do it anyway. Small IMPORT type lettering on a sticky sticker thingy. Reminds me regards having the same problems on my fireblade back in days. Brush scripts, tiny lettering etc. we just took the buiscut back then. :teeth: :teeth:

could be worse - I could be optiing for black background and silver writting like on classic cars. That would open up another depate lol :surrender:

Yes, I've heard this too. The Lotus Europa and The Lotus Elan also had a unique numberplate system. The letters were stuck onto the grille. I had mine Europa some 40 years ago and I've forgotten if the rear also had just the letters too, photos I've looked at are inconclusive. Not my Europa but like this.

Just wanted people's views on the subject out of interest. That's all. And yes I'll be doing it.

But why?

Also worth remembering that if you have a personalised registration that they can remove it from you for good, if you're found with dodgy plates. Tbh if you want your car to look cleaner at the front end, just don't run a plate: The penalty is actually less, and then you can at least claim it fell off rather than you did it on purpose. Well, once anyway...!

Ah the old 'I did this for years and never got pulled' argument so then it can't be illegal can it :headhurt:

All I know is that if I was involved in an accident with a modified car I would be taking pictures of everything and anything ;)

The police pull you over for a loud exhaust? How loud exactly?

My exhaust is pretty loud and drove past them plenty of times. My neighbours are obsessed with it. Started it up at 6pm and the lady who watches me 24/7 came out and went "excuse me your car is too loud can you turn it off so i can hear my t.v" just laughed and went good one. Next day came out she rushes over after shouting at me and went "sorry son it was my fridge". I worry sometimes.

Got pulled for running US style plates/smaller letters - had originals in car so was made to change at roadside then let go. Also know of members that got £100/3 points for same - So you play --- you pay Be warned!

I don't think you get points for the plate, or certainly I didn't. I got a £60 fine (Now raised to £100 I believe) for mine back in 2007/8, I've never done it again

I used a stick on plate on my Zed, almost impossible to spot the difference to just sticking the plastic plate on - up close clearly a much cleaner look to the car.
