Good reply, thanks.

I wonder if because we have zeds parked outside if we don't forget that they are a great car in their own right, it's when i remind myself of that I think i've not got it at all bad....they look great, sound nice, go well and are cheap to run...it's when i have these reality checks that I think I should tweek the Zed and get it just how I want it.

I agree, I think you can get used to the car and forget how good it is. Best thing I find is if you dont drive it for a few weeks, then get in it and you get that buzz back. Problem I had, was that I was using it every day for a 100mile commute, so after a bit that magic wore off. But, even so, I still prefered it to most of the other cars people have mentioned.

Id think long & hard before spending too much on modding it. Sure you can turbo it, super charge it etc... but its not cheap to get gains out of the HR as Nissan tuned it to the max anyway. One reality check I had was a mate who got an imprezza on the road, with 320bhp (i think the rolling road said it was) for less than £2k. Okay, so completely different type of car and you cant really compare it with a RWD v6 zed, but it made me really think did I want to try and make my zed quicker or not when I can just go out & buy something like that for a fraction of the cost.

throw a V8 in the Z.... i have been sorely tempted!!!!!!!!

you buy a new car for 20k and in a year or twos time you have lost another 5k in depreciation.... spend that 5k or so on a V8 and fitting kit ;)

And don't think I've not looked at it....The is a firm in Brum that do LS V8 conversions, they've done them in TVRs, BMWs and RX7's...I can't for the life of me think what they are called, it will come to me...might be dyno tourque or something like that.

When i looked at it you were looking at 10k for an LS2 drive in and out.

Let me know tye name when it comes to you. From what ive read it's a tricky job due to most LS V8's being lhd setup

I will probally change early next year

current thoughts for next car are

TVR Tamora

370z

TVR Cerb

My heart would scream for a TVR....my wallet would much prefer the zed.

The Chimaera that i had was no more expensive than the Zed to run and remember practically zero depreciation I in fact made money on mine

The Cerb and tamora though will be a lot more expensive to run and if engine goes pop you have a big bill but again in real terms they wont depreciate

I was in pretty much the same position a couple of months back...ended up going for a BMW Z4 35i...solid 3.0ltr block with twin turbo's...up the boost abit and your running 360 whp with decentish MPG...also loved the idea of a hard top convertible

I have toyed with idea of a Scoobie many times myself but, and this says more about me than anything, I just don't think that at almost 39 years of age I can live with the image....great cars but just a bit to much for me these days.

Someone said on here recently that the uprev was like having a sport button, doesn't throw you back in your seat but it just sharpens everthing up and I thought that was a great way of putting it, I'd love to have a GTM supercharger but for now I'm only thinking a few body modifications, Exhaust, berks, uprev, nothing to dramatic....although it isn't exactly cheap!

As for leaving it a few weeks without driving it....i've gone 7 months with it sat in the garage!, it will be like getting a new car when it goes back on the road which i'm hoping will be April!

I know what your saying. My missus wont let me get a scooby simply because of the image they have now.

As for the uprev making much of a difference, I know on the older zeds with 276bhp, you can get them upto nearly similar power to the HR`s by fitting a full exhaust system, a modified pendulum, air filters and a remap. But, what sort of power will the same stuff add to the 313HR? When I looked into it, in order to get an extra 30bhp out of the 313 model you would end up spending a lot of money!

7 months in the garage!!!! eeeeeek!!!

Still one of my fav vieos....stick in some headphones, the over run at the end is lovely.

That's what inspired me to look into the v8 conversion ;)

You could go the LS1 route, not quite as powerful but still sounds like the Devil and no doubt a little cheaper than the LS2.

LS2 is worth the extra money from what I've heard :) bit always an option!

Take the Cerb off the list!

No :boxing: :boxing:

Pop Boom bang. Plus you will be walking about like Quasimodo after a short time.

Anything over 150mph you just don't feel safe in it.

Tamora just feels more planted but does not have the top end of the Cerb.

Abbey stage 3 on the HR is just shy of £1800 and I think it gives about 290 at the hubs, not sure what that equates to at the fly though...I'm guessing about 320bhp.

Craig is very well respected in the Rx7 community, there was a video on one of the rx7 forums recently with his V8 twin turbo rx7 build on the dyno, 1000bhp or so :)

When I had the zed the replacements I was looking at were a 996 c4s or merc SL, german sporting luxury was what I was after. If I had gone down that route I wouldn't have the house I bought so they were soon out the equation

When I got closer to having to sell the zed I was gutted cos of the work that had gone into it. No car under 10k was taking my fancy. I wanted a head turner, something rare, nice to drive, power wasn't essential but would obviously be a bonus but nothing was jumping out at me

Then I decided to go for something cheaper, keep it as a second car when the time came to get something sensible. That way I wouldn't mind having another project and be gutted to lose it. If I went jap then I could still go to meets and shows etc

Thought about a few cars like an S14a etc but decided on an r33 as it's that bit more unique. Searched for a while and found one for a touch over 3k. Already modded so I wouldn't be throwing money at it, previous owners loss was my gain

It will be a long term on going project and hoping to get a bit more hands on than I did with the zed. When I need something with 4 doors il get a german barge

A lot of people with 2 cars get a nice coupe for the weekends and a shed for commuting. But I always say let the daily commuter be a nice luxury car and the "shed" be a cheap project for the weekends

If it was me I'd be spending some money on your 350Z, get some lovely exterior bits, decats instead of berks, nice exhaust and cai and an uprev, coilovers and some spacers. Then you'll see that changing car was just a thought

 Didn't see that one coming Jay :teeth:

I know mate, been trying to put it off for a while, but I am travelling up and down the country with work now so a more economical car may be needed. I have toyed with the idea of getting a runner, but image is a big thing in my line of work so I would really need a nice car.

Gigolo ?

When I had the zed the replacements I was looking at were a 996 c4s.....

Bloke who bought my 313HR part ex`d his 996 for it as he said the 996 was uninspiring and he just didnt like it. Looking at current for sale prices, you could sell your HR, buy a 996 and have a few grand spare change. Or, if its the c4s model, then it would be a few grand more than a 313HR.

Having just been in the market for a car, i can safely say, i had no interest in anything else but a Zed. My budget was flexible and there is a plethora of cars out there for not a lot of money these days. I guess if you perhaps had and done the whole Zed thing and you want a change i can understand.

Its funny how many people aspire or want to own a Porsche, coming from chats from previous forums also on the what would you change your "car" for topics. I think they are foul things, i am not doubting their performance merits after having driven varying friends cars, but the typical owner (to me) seems more concerned with having a car with the Stuttgart badge and nothing else.

I do hanker for a TVR at some point and probably a Tamora or T350/Sagaris if my budget would stretch.

LOL, thats only at the weekends  I prefer the name exotic dancer if you dont mind. Nah I am a project manager in the oil and gas industry and its rather snobby. Clients like to see you in a nice car etc as it means the company I work for is professional and doing well. Its a load of bull....... but it works so hey ho.
