Displaying of number plates

I've been searching around for a definitive answer to this but all I've managed to get (amongst lettering laws) is "A number plate must be clearly displayed on the front/rear of the vehicle".

Now, does this subtly define that it has to be displayed entirely centrally? Or could it be for example, towards the bottom of the front bumper as long as it's in the middle? Or attached to the grill (e.g like on a zed)?

Would be nice if I could tie it to the grill once my body kit's fitted to the zed, that way I wouldn't have to worry about damaging the paint if/when I have to remove the plate.

Cheers

I'm sure theres a height requirement... :surrender:

Doesn't seem to be any regulations regarding height. Don't some vehicles like vans and trailers have them really high up at the back? Anyway, as long as they're visible to the numberplate recognition system that cameras use I guess you're O.K. Only thing I did pick up on was that number plates should be as vertical as possible.

The law states that the front registration plate must be placed on the most front part of the vehicle - i.e. the front bumper

I used to run a car without a front plate and only ever got pulled once

Cops don't usually notice when on the move, but may notice it easier if you're parked up or something

I always kept the plate in the boot just in case

EDIT - there is nothing about height or placement, just that it must be on the further front point of the car

When I had my celica I had it in bodyshop and one of the jobs was to smooth out holes in from bumper made by screws for number plate, and I had my number plate attached l(with suction cups) to the front left corner of windscreen(by tax disc) ones police were driving past as I was getting into my car in a public car park. They stopped for a chat and a quick check...asked about number plate if it was blocking my view-n it wasn't blocking it that much, then they got all their books and manuals out from the boot of their car-but after looking thru them for good 10minutes-they couldn't find anything that said it was illegal, wished me a good day and let me go!

Also a friend of mine, about 2 years ago, asked VOSA bloke at one of cruises about having number plate in the window and he said as far as its displayed on the front of the car, it's fully visible and as vertical as possible (as possible...so I guess it don't have to be fully vertical) its fine!

My other mate has American style tilted number plate bracket-he got told off n told to change it, as cameras wouldn't pick it up.

So long story short - as far as its fully visible it will be fine :)

Think you've been given some duff info there Vlad

I've researched this numerous times and spoken to quite a few traffic cops over the years who all come back saying that it has to be on the most front part of the car

Putting it in the window may be making it visible, but is illegal - I think the cops just give a bit of discretion when it comes to that from my experience though

My old zed had the plate tucked in the bottom passenger side of the mouth. Had no problems.

Also my old fto had the plate stuck a good 7-8 inches back in the mouth of a veilside bumper again without problems.

Going back a good 10-12 years my old corsa plate was on the very bottom of the main 'mouth' at about 80 degrees or so. Without problems lol

How would that work on a combine harvester?

They go on the road and they don't put there plate on the furthest front point of the vehicle!.

Cops would get dizzy trying to look for it!

U.K E-Types never had a front number plate holder, they had to be stuck on the bonnet. U.S E-Types did have a number plate holder under the grille but the number plates used were different, a U.K number plate wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes under there. There may be other cars like this from that era.

See point 8 on page six of the link I posted. "Agricultural machines" (along with road rollers and work trucks) differ slightly to other vehicles - essentially so long as it's visible from the front and is as vertical as possible, it's fine.

I don't think they make spacers big enough to fill that gap  .
