M9O OEY
Hi , Iv recently bought a Z , and when i spoke to the insurance i told them the Z was completely standard . On closer inspection i have a japspeed exhaust a better air intake filter also not sure bout the lights but i think they are LED s not sure if these are standard. Should i tell them (Admiral) are they likely to up my premium? Thanks for any replies. Newbie
Ian
Yes you should tell them & it will probably go up
BladesGrant
I didn't tell my insurance of my smal mods the first year I owned the car. I had K&N Typhoon, Plenum Spacer, K2 exhuast. I have now declared all my mods as I have had a full body kit and 20" wheels. I think its down to you really as you will get like for like replacement if you are in an accident and you have declared them.
rtbiscuit
they will up your premium but it might only be about £30 how long you got till renewal, might be worth holding out till then, and then declare them. ring up and ask for a quote to find out what it would cost if you were to add them. then you'll know and can either add them to the policy or keep stum. just keep in mind if the car is not standard and you have an accident then your policy is invalid, and they may not pay out. geoff-r
The rear lights could be standard as 07+ have LED rear lights. But in answer to your question, yes you should technically tell them about the mods. But it is up to you. I'm not going to tell you what you should or shouldn't do with your insurance as I have stuck little parts on in the past and never told my insurance, although I have been upfront with my Z

martinmac
Its pretty straightforward really. If you tell them they may and probably will load your premium. If you dont and the worst case scenario happens they may well refuse to pay up. Find a company that understands what the mods are on these cars and you will be fine. A certain well know main stream insurance company wanted to load my insurance by over 1k for my mods. I pay less than 40% of that declared. Didn't know that, I would only declare if it was like for like, not point otherwise (apart from the fact they may not pay out if they investigate!!) M9O OEY
Thanks all for the fast replies , my argument to the insurance company would be that - how does the average jo bloggs - me know that any parts have been modified ? Do all insurance companies expect people to know if their car is factory standard, as 999/1000 people wouldnt have a clue. The car is a 53 JDM so i guess the lights are not standard and i guess the japseed exhaust is also not standard but i love the sound of the exhaust and it will definitely be staying all the best Newbie
martinmac
Its never an easy call and many insurance companies havent a clue about mods. When I called Chris Knott I was talking to a lady and made the stupid assumption that she would have to be walked through the mods. She lost me after about two minutes. Try a few of the companies that specialise in modded cars and see what the loading is.
Anubis
Average Joe Bloggs may not know the difference but if you have an accident the inspector of the aftermath will. Insurance companies will try pretty much anything to wriggle out of a payout because it costs them a lot - for the sake of an extra bit of cash is it worth risking not having them paying out (you could be £10k out of pocket!) Just try them...you may be surprised. Do an online quote with admiral first and if they ask too much then state when you done it online you got far cheaper so they should try and match it. Chesterfield
I once called direct line and advised I had uprated brakes, and they asked "what are uprated brakes?". Time to move insurer. I do reccommend advising of all mods though. Anything not declared gives an insurer reason to walk away from a policy
M9O OEY
Thanks think i'll give admiral a call and tell them bout the exhaust and no doubt be charged . cant really change companies as iv only just taken out the insurance and i got it cheap as i did the multi car . Also i paid in full Thanks Newbie
Roo
I'm with admiral. Nismo spoiler only added about £20 BUT I then had to take additional modifications insurance so that if it is damaged it is replaced with the same. Otherwise they would just replace with standard spoiler. Think that was another 20 odd quid. FYI they seem to"group" mods. So may be able to class all mods in one area as a single mod. I asked them about braided brake lines, uprated pads and slotted disks and they classed all of that as "modified brakes"

lilsheepshagga_turbo
admiral are suprisingly good for mods m8.. im fully declared with like for like on mods and my premium was 80 quid more...basically if im honest your driving without insurance.. i dont think ignorance stands up to well in an arguement against insurers but each to their own buddy. -ho
gangzoom
I've been with Admiral with nearly 6 years, and they don't really seem to mind that much about mods, my premium went up about £30 too:-) On the other hand when I had an accident I got a 1.0 Honda Jazz as an courtesy car, having read about people getting Audi TTs as courtesy cars if it happens again will see if they can do better:-p
sketch
yeah and the old saying goes "ignorance is no excuse" if you had a crash it could void you insurance, which will leave you with about £10k out of pocket for your car, plus damages to the other car and anything else you mite have hit, they you would be done for defrauding an insurance company and i doubt you would ever get insured again lol, which is fine if you like biking everywhere...mite be a bit extreme tho on a good note tho, lol, my bro got stopped by the police for a veichle check and got home and panicked, he foned his insurance company and told them about his mods , full exhaust including manifold and sports cat, pipercross carbon air box, lowered 40mm, loads of lil bits, (its on his 1.4 mg zr, chavvy i know but hes 18, it looks ok actually) and his insurance went up £50, personally im amazed how cheap it was, dunno if it would be the same on a more powerful car tho? and what about factory up-grade exhausts or factory nismo kits? my exhaust is a fubijusbo legalis R which was a factory upgrade from japan, do i have to tell them about it? I have told them i have differant wheels tho...
evest
My advice would be to declare the mods to the best of your knowledge. I was under the impression that for an insurance company to refuse a pay out due to an undeclared mod, they would need to prove that the part in question was a contributory factor to the incident. The exception to this is the case of the car being stolen, where they may insist that mods make a car more attractive to theives, so must be declared so they can risk assess accordingly. Perhaps this varies for company to company. Things like exhaust and air filters shouldn't really make a huge difference as you're not massively changing the performance of the car. If they try to charge through the nose - let them know you won't be staying with them next year. You will probably hear: "Oh, I'll just speak to my supervisor and see if we can do it any cheaper..." Tractor
I got a multi-car quote from admiral yesterday, i declared the induction kit which didnt seem to bother them and the quote worked out to around £650. Then i mentioned the wheel spacers (in my opinion hardly worth mentioning but still best to be on the safe side) The chap wasnt sure what they were so dissappeared off to talk to his supervisor. He came back and said the wheel spacers would put the car into the "high risk" category and the quote would be over £3000 WTF! I assured the guy how trivial they were but they were sticking to their guns on it. Bizzare. My GF said 'You will just have to take off the wheel spacers then' My response: errrrr........ i dont think so!!
Cheesypuff
I enquired a couple weeks ago as to how an aftermarket exhaust would affect my existing policy with Direct Line, they refused to continue to insure me if I had one fitted! I expected my premium may increase slightly but couldnt beleive it when they wouldnt insure me at all. I have no other mods, 7 yrs NCB and never had an accident or made a claim in my life, what have they got against me???
