Also, Nissan put stickers on the underside of the bonnet - mine is a 313, and it has a black one about the refrigerant in the a/c, and another white one with a Nissan hologram and the VIN number on it. The top edge of the bumper also has the hologram/VIN sticker, as do both of the door shut areas and the underside of the bootlid. If these are present, it is very unlikely (but not impossible) that it has been repaired and the repairer replaced the stickers...

My dad had some panels replaced on the leather Recaros in his Sapphire Cosworth - I think it was these guys: http://www.kbaggstrimming.co.uk/Contact/FINDING%20US/ I will check with him to confirm. Edit:- it was here! As I recall, we supplied the leather (bought a very cheap offcut from Beaulieu Autojumble in the right colour), and they did the work - first class job.

If its not eggy, its not likely to be the cats. If its an acrid burning smell, my money would be on something rubber/plastic burning on the new exhaust. Like Chris said, check all the exhaust mounts.

And the rest I was trying not to be too scary with the hypothetical repair bill, but the GTR Mech I was talking to did once mention £18k for a gerabox problem on a car less than 1 year old....

If its out of warranty, what happens when it goes wrong? It'll be another £5k loan! Seriously, when I've had the Zed serviced at the local Nissan HPC, the GTR Master Mech there tells me some scary stories about the huge repair bills warranty companies have picked-up on GTRs he has worked on! I know they don't all break, but worth considering all the same!

Where in the country are you? You could try to meet somebody else with a similar car and compare the noises? I'm in Dorset if it helps, and my 57 plate should be mechanically similar to yours. The transmissions are a bit noisy on the zeds, but I wouldn't say a loud whine is normal.

I would have thought that there would be a lot more fresh imports than the number exported, so there were probably more than 47 scrapped in that period...

Welcome along! The square rear plate says its not UK spec, and probably is an import. As others have said the price needs to reflect that.
