On a serious note, how poor is it that we've all chosen our favourite actress based on how fit they are, rather than if they're any good?

How dare you tar me with that brush ***faux outrage***, it's not like the actors I picked are hideous looking chaps

It's an interesting point you raise though Dan. The movies are full of beautiful people, so it's hard not to pick lookers as 'favourites' (male or female). FWIW Sharon Stone is superlative in Casino and Monivca Bellucci puts in an very brave performance in a number of films (Malena & Irreversible to quickly name a couple). I also feel the underlying sexism of mainstream Hollywood pictures actually makes it harder to pick women based on strong performances, as they're so often cast as eye candy only, or in the tedious neurotic wife/girlfriend role.

With the exception of Sigourney Weaver, which women have had powerful leading roles in multiple movies?

This is sad reality of decent budget cinema, because if the Aliens movies taught us anything, it's that men are perfectly happy to enjoy films with strong female roles that don't necessarily involve skin. So many films fail the Bechdel Test, which TBF isn't hugely scientific, but it is indicative.

Also, if you ask a lady to sit down and watch a Steve Buscemi or a Colin Farrell movie, you both know which will be better, and you also both know which one they'll watch - secretly they're just like us. ;)

Ref: Bechdel Test (Wikipedia)

What is now known as the Bechdel test was introduced in Alison Bechdel's comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. In a 1985 strip titled "The Rule", an unnamed female character says that she only watches a movie if it satisfies the following requirements:

It has to have at least two women in it,

who talk to each other,

about something besides a man.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Robert De niro or Dustin Hoffman either...

I'd need top three comedy, top three drama, top three horror, top three action...top three 'chick flick'...

Jolie isn't that good, IMHO. I don't fancy her either, so totally objective.

Is Scarlett good then? I thought she was just very pretty : cloud9:

meh ... I think they're both good actresses ... but I think Jolie's 'image' scares the bejaysus out of most men

No-one's mentioned Robert Redford or James Spader either - the lists would go on and on and on...

Meryl Streep... Helen Mirren .... Angelina Jolie (surely she counts as fit?!) ...Scarlett Johansen (ditto) ...Holly Hunter....Jodie Foster

Holly Hunter is a superb shout.

Jolie was my favourite for years, she's gone a bit thin, but half a dozen hot meals and she'd be tremendous. She was also very good in Gia and I liked her in Pushing Tin too. Her image scares me a bit Vik, but that's just an aphrodisiac  all the knife play and keeping blood in vials. It's freaky, but freaky isn't a bad thing.

It is ~ lots of young actors who actually came from the real "City Of God" and the surrounding Favelas.

Shocking, dramatic and an incredible film imo. ;)

Some others to think about.

"North by North West" by Alfred Hitchcock, the scene in the auction room is pure genius

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", possibly the best ever final scene, except for possibly "For a few Dollars More"

"The Godfather" has nobody else mentioned this?

"Bonnie and Clyde" saw this at the pictures when it was first released.

"Erin Brockovitch" don't normally like Julia Roberts but this is a great film.

"Quatermass and The Pit" probably quite dated now though

and finally, "Robocop" just love the dark humour in this one.
