there is the dry sump method.

 

 

basically you leave it till the engine spits a piston through the bonnet, then you know its time to top it up again,

On second thoughts, the current method seems ok!

its not that hard to read, but its best done on a cold engine on a flat surface, and you have about 2 dips in the pipe before it starts to smear up the tube.

 

as for putting it in, it just takes practice thats all.

 

i didn;t find it that difficult.

Dry sump sounds expensive as does not checking your oil...

As said its not hard to read at all if you let the oil go totally cold. If its even slightly warm then yes the oil is all over the dipstick but when totally cold on a flat surface its very clear where the oil level is.

i find first thing on a morning is good, the oil has had 12 hours to cool, and usually on a crisp winter morning, the oil is even thicker due to the low temps.

Don't even attempt to remove it when its dark or even in twilight unless you have a decent torch you'll never get it back in. Later models, 2007 onwards have a normal dipstick.

I agree with JetSet...dont attempt to remove it in the dark..

bad enough in the day even then you still need a torch to find the hole. :thumbdown:

Good tip, I live on a hill so have to drive somewhere flat to check the oil properly but it warms up a bit and is tough to read. Just checked at work (level carpark) and the level was clear as day

I'm guessing this isnt an issue on the HR engine as its located in a different place?

really? I have an 07 plate 350z and the dipstick still has that kink and readability factor is zero on the damn thing.
