Exhaust Questions..... Yep I need a new one....

Gents,

Got into my car today and sparked her up - only to realise she sounded like a jet aircraft. Upon inspection i have a heavily corroded joint between the back box and centre section that has come apart. The centre section is the piece that has failed but i thing the actual connection on the backbox looks too far gone too.

My question is... What do i buy? I need an exhaust as quickly as possible. Im not really a fan of super loud exhausts and i would say i liked her the way she was with the standard system.

Can you reccommend what i should buy. Obviously the cheaper the better!

Cheers

Alastair

either look on ebay and the forum for a second hand OEM exhaust or get something aftermarket like scorpion which isn't too loud.

This is a common fault with all OEM exhausts and many people seem to have been able to get them fixed with a bit of welding - cheapest option but I doubt it will last forever.

Be prepared for aftermarket suppliers not to have them in stock ready to go. Quite often, it seems, the supplier sources the system once you have placed an order so check as to how long you may wait, noting you are clearly in need of one now. ;)

Also, do a search on here - there are various options and a a range of prices to suit your budget.

Got the exact same problem with mine!

I recently had the same problem, however when I took it to my local specialist garage they said that it was really not worth trying to weld it back together. Mine had corroded around the bolt plate where the back box and main pipe join together.

Welding is a quick fix, this is true, but if you live in an area where there's lots of speed humps, which let's face it is pretty much the entire country, then it's probably not the best route. Don't forget the car will flex a little as you drive, especially when going over speed humps and this could potentially weaken the welding. If the welding goes then you're worse off than if you just bought a new ex system.

The OEM parts are fine but if you're replacing like for like, then surely you're going to find the same thing happens again as it seems to be known issue.

In my opinion you could do a lot worse than Scorpion. They look good, sound great (not too noisy and has a nice note) and they're reasonably priced, plus they're stainless steel and come with a lifetime guarantee, so no corrosion problems.

Had mine fitted about 3 months ago and I'm loving it. Admittedly I had a couple teething problems (not hanging correctly and centre pipe vibrated at low revs) but the guys who fitted it were really good and corrected the issues without fuss.

Did they either sell you an exhaust or fit you an off the self one later? Sounds like they did not want the work.

Welding the back box to middle pipe would cause 0 problems from speed bumps etc. The joins are not there to provide flexability they are there so it can be made in parts and easily replaced. The joints won't be flexing as you bounce over a speed bump.

As said by others IMO welding it would be a fine solution. The exhausts are very good, the join is just the weak area, the rest of the metal work on them is of quite a high standard for a normal exhaust.
