Goodwood Festival of Speed

Recommended Posts

1. Too expensive, for sustenance when there as well as entry price.
2. If you haven’t booked a hotel for next year already, you ain’t gonna get one.
3. Very little to actually see there (from friends who have been for the last few years including this year). Lots of electric stuff (yawn), and precious little from manufacturers that you could get anywhere near either.

4. Waaaaaayyyyyyy too many people there. Seriously, it’s heaving.

Smaller events are far more interesting to me these days.

I class Goodwood as one of, if not, the best show of the year. In fact, I'm pretty sure people globally do, whenever I mention it to someone in the USA - they can only dream to visit Goodwood.

As much as I love smaller shows, it's undeniable Goodwood is huge. People visit from all over Europe.

Hypercars worth 10's of millions pooled together on display, a whole rally stage, there is something there for everyone.

It's less of an individual 'community' event as such, you can't have a 'club stand' at Goodwood which is probably why you don't see many posts in here. That being said, have some photos below I took this year.

Lol one thing ill give to Mr Ekona is brutal honesty. The points he bought up are valid. What was it £150 - £200 per head. Also its become an elite event with a few charity discount tickets for wider appeal. Its great to have but nothing stopping any company in UK from renting a small airport and hosting an event of their own.

Getting manufacturers to attend and showcase would be extremely difficult without close relationships or money involved. Ofcourse if i won the lotto id look into it lol

There will be more EV stuff now unfortunately. Thats where its headed.

Long history of Goodwood means its internationally recognized. In the age of social media it probably wouldn't take a 100 years to get to this stage. Its all part of the history.

I went to Goodwood in 2014 and absolutely loved it. Need to go again.  I had free 4 day passes through work thanks to a project we did with them.  Friday was the most enjoyable day as it was much quieter, and all the cars were testing up the hill so still got to see plenty, and had the pick of the grandstands so moved around a lot.  Saturday was okay, but Sunday was unbearably busy.  Did get to see Chris Hoy's crash in the GTR though, i was right on that corner when it happened.

Closest hotel i could get was 30 miles away though. 🤪

Same. Went in 2018. Free vip tickets via work. Sat in the Hill Pavilion on the first corner. Bright, sunny weekend, loved every minute. I took the wife and kids down and made a weekend of it.

Would I have gone if I had to pay for the vip tickets? - probably not! They were £700 a pop I think! 😱

But definitely recommend going and experiencing for sure. Just go for the regular tickets & make sure the weather's nice the year you go!

I went back in 2009 and thought it was okay, but nothing special. Best memory was watching Hamilton go up the hill, but that was a blink and you’ll miss it kinda thing.

I would imagine you had more access than regular folk? Or did you just go in on a regular ticket?

I flew in by helicopter, but that's another story for another time. 🤣

@Coz@TORQEN still hates me for not taking him with me on that occasion. 🤓

That being said, having attended SEMA 7 times and Tokyo Auto Salon 3 times it's very difficult to class any other events in UK being better than that, the standard is very high in both USA and Japan shows, so I simply don't go to any of the shows in UK anymore.

Good wood is a great show, although last time I went was in 2002. Funny story…..

my sisters partner at the time was an MP in Chichester, they provide the personal security for the drivers, so my sister and I got access all areas. He was providing security for Murray Walker and his buddy Jenson Button so I got to meet them both. Murray was fantastic really nice man 😎. When all the drivers went for lunch we met in the drivers tent, I literally walked in to Barry Sheene by accident and spilt his pint …. He was very nice about it 😆. We all decided to go for a walk about while the drivers were troughing so my sister and I walked out the drivers tent in front of all the crowds flanked by security …… you could hear people going “who’s that?” One little kid ran up and asked for my autograph….. did not want to disappoint so scribbled something illegible 😂

fond memories of that day, we had such a laugh!

What differentiates Goodwood FoS from just about every other motor show - and the reason why many manufacturers are now choosing to reveal new models there - is that you get to see the cars do more than just sitting on a stand.

Dan is mostly right - it's busy, it's expensive and it's become a victim of it's own success.

However, I disgree that there's little to actual see (although there was less to see this year as Saturday was cancelled) - there's plenty to see whatever flavour of vehicle appeals (2 wheels, 4 wheels, historic, modern, road, race, rally, and just about everything in between). As said though, it gets busy and the hillclimb (especially the shootout on the Sunday) is the main draw so it's difficult to get a good spot and still be able to see anything else. As with any motorsport, you're going to see more of the hillclimb (and rally) runs on TV at home, but you'll miss out on everything else there.

Ultimately it depends on what you want from a show and setting expectations.
