2017 370Z Nismo Nav System

Recommended Posts

As much as the standard sat nav is 'okay', I want to start using Waze if possible for a couple of upcoming trips, one being into Europe.

So, I have the Waze app on my phone - how, if at all, can I connect and display on the car's actual nav display screen? Would it be purely by Bluetooth and/or by use of the aux input sockets within the centre armrest storage?

Or is is just an impossibility, given the low tech state of the whole system?

Sorry for the dim questions - this sort of thing isn't my specialist subject!

Cheers for any help or guidance.

Your phone is the best way to go. Cars don't give updates.

As in speed cameras.

All my cars have satnav they are out of date.

Yeah I get that Pete. What I'm want to do is get Waze from my phone onto the car's nav screen, per my question.

Without replacing the entire unit, you can’t. Tbh I don’t ever bother with in car nav either any more, get a good mount and use your phone: certainly the bigger models (Max, Plus sizes) are more than capable of giving you the info you need clearly.

There will be UK sellers. Plus you keep your steering wheel controls. Once fitted you can do all the things mentioned.

Thanks, if the Z was a long term keeper then I might invest in something like this. But I'll keep this info in my back pocket for consideration.

hmm.... considering something else?

There's always something else to consider!

But seriously, I'm into year 3 with the Z now so may well change late this year or early next.

I think that might be the more practical option.

My recent Moto G50 is about a big enough phone that I want, so that should do.

Used a Chromcast? Sorry, you'll have to enlighten me there!

Yeah, cant beat the seating position and other pros. I too am looking forward to trying other cars. People wax lyrical about GTR being the next step. Really I think after Z you want either something with a v8 or v10 etc or something more sporty, agile, lightweight. Thats why im considering the Cayman. GTR ill definitely check out but im not a fan of heavy and large cars. Theres a few GTR in my area even a Nismo GTR. Sort of feel theyre old news nowadays lol. Always be a fan seems like a good rental.

I thought chrome casts worked via Wi-Fi so once you move from your house it would fail?

any links to the video, I also have one knocking around to play with.

You'll need to tether to your phone or use a mobile router

I think the only way this will work properly, and update the inside of the car, is to get a new head unit/screen thingy.

I've been pointed to a recommended installer near me in Coulsdon, Surrey. Called them an hour ago and they're going to check out the options and get back to me next week.

Please do update here with what they offer and if you end up going for it - not far from me and something I would consider for the right price.

As for the Chromecast - I done some digging and looks like it has been done a couple times before.  Seems you need to ground out some wiring (or get a kit and plug that into the headunit) in order to allow the video to work whilst the handbrake is off.  The remainder is mostly a series of appropriate connectors/converters to switch the RCA to HDMI (into which the chromecast would plug in).  The chromecast running would require you to tether it to your phone, as Evans mentioned.

Seems like it may be a good alternative, although I assume small things such as wanting to switch tracks on spotify (using steering/headunit controls) likely wouldn't work whilst casting (and you would instead need to do that through your phone).

Theres also another forum post...from another forum...won't share as not sure if allowed...

Yes, I'll report back on the options I'm offered. Cost will have an influence on the decision as the car isn't a long term keeper.

An Android head unit is the way to go. I have a nav one in the 350. You can upload many apps even mirror link your phone. As for Nav apps Waze is DUNG here in NI Like some others it gets lost then all you have is a blue dot on a blank screen. I use HereWeGo app on my 10.1 Samsung tablet rigged into the ZED as I run Torque apps Racingmeter on it and the Torque app itself. Head unit Tablet and Phone all USB connected. When completed arm rest cubby will have a panel mount USB port inside it so phone and cable will be hidden away. AS THE GODS OF NISSAN INTENDED !  Tablet is mounted to the dash cubby door with a Velcro tablet mount known by brand as a Hedgie available on Ebay. For Nav I remove the tablet and turn it vertical. Head unit at 7 inch is a bit too piddley small for my ageing close up eyesite. But on the tablet THAT IS A NAV ! The white ugly USB cable will be replaced today with a slinky black braid lead witn anodised aluminium right angle plug. Most of the lead hidden behind the dash centre. This is being done today as upgrading the head unit too. BY NECESSITY  But that is a whole different story and not in any way the old head units fault. BUT THE FAULT OF AN EBAY SELLER WHO I BOUGHT AN OBD TO USB CABLE FROM.   THIS BARSTEWARDS CABLE FRIED THE HEAD UNIT. Advertised as 5 Volts. After the smoke show I ordered a   £5.29 delivered USB Voltage tester USB END TESTED AT 12.7 VOLTS with ignition off. NOT A HAPPY BUNNY ! Luckilily tablet and phone were not connected at the time as those would have fried too.. The flash drive did not fair so well.

Ebay is hit and miss for sure 😆

You are right.  New cable will arive today. Now that I own a USB tester new cable will be checked BEFORE FULL CONNECTION. The reason for needing OBD to USB is Bluetooth on Racingmeter makes RPM and shift lights a bit too laggy for propper usage. USB connection will sort it. BTW Thanks for the compliment.
