which OBD that actually works

Ok so there has been a thread on this in the past and TBH no conclusive answers were sort.

All I need to know is which BLUE TOOTH OBD DONGLE works with DASHCOMMAND and TORQUE that can actually talk to to a 2005 DE car's ECU.

Ive tried three now and each albeit connect to my tablet via bluetooth, does not give me the live info or error messages due to "unable to talk to the cars ECU"

I'm on the verge of giving up as I really fancy all the telemetries up live on my screen that in my centre console.

So OBD dongle name, cost and where to buy it from please. Dont want to know what youve tried and did not work as thats been covered all before.

thanks

I've got one of these: http://www.amazon.co.../dp/B00H9S71LW/

Bit more expensive than the £15 knock offs, but has worked in a 350z, a DC2-R, two gen7 Celicas and a Legacy Outback so far.

This is with torque on my phone and android headunits, mostly to reset / read codes, but have played with logging / dash stuff a little bit.

I have the older version of this.

They claim you can leave this in the car even when the car is turned off, but I'd be a little doubtful of that, or at least test and see exactly how long until you get a flat battery.

Never had a problem with my original version of this, running of iPad or Iphone, running Dashcommand.

Its a hit and miss for me. I bought 2 in the past, I have to return both to Ebay seller as they don't work for me. Not sure if it was my zed or mobile??

ELM327 OBD2 Bluetooth dongles are the 2 that i bought from EBay (£5.00 each, similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-OBD2-ELM327-V1-5-Bluetooth-Car-Scanner-Android-Torque-Auto-Scan-Tool-OBD-II-/131753884201?hash=item1ead24ba29:g:0ukAAOSwr7ZW6R6y). My mate has an ELM327 Bluetooth too which I borrowed from him and it works on my zed and phone. I have some ABS issue with my zed recently and decided to take a punt and buy another dongle (£9.45, claimed to be the latest ELM327 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Torque-ELM-327-Bluetooth-BT-OBD2-OBDII-Car-Diagnostic-Scanner-Code-Reader-/322061669942?).........failed to work again. My phone managed to pair with the dongle, but when i launch Torque app, it just won't connect to the dongle and my ECU. Lucky my mate (looks similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Android-Torque-Car-Mini-ELM327-EXCEL-OBD2-OBDII-Bluetooth-Scanner-Code-Reader-UK-/121731877575?hash=item1c57c90ac7:g:fd4AAOSwxH1UGtYp) still has his dongle and he has now given it to me as this no longer works on his 5 series.

Having said that, the dongle can only read engine DTC (ie codes starts with Pxxxx), i can't get it to read the system DTC (ie codes starts with Cxxxx). I drove my zed with potential ABS issue (ABS, Slip and ESC light lighted up) to a garage and they managed to read the Cxxxx code using Snap-On diagnostic tool. But the OBD2 dongle + Torque app says I don't have any code stored in the ECU. Maybe it's a limitation on the Torque App? Or the OBD2 dongle.

I'm now considering to buy a wired handheld reader - £30ish but only downside is you can't linked it to your Android head unit to display dials

I got one off Amazon... works great for me! This is the link to it! Not too expensive either!

That's not what he's asking for.

I have one of those but he needs one for connecting to the software he said.

Yes he is lol

Cant find the torque app on the apple store. Unfortunately Ive an Iphone and Ipad and already have the OBD2 dongle.

Can however find the dashboard command which is £7.99, just want to be able to read the codes on the ecu.

Thanks Guys. Looks as though there is still allot of ambiguity with using these. A lot better info this time around though so thanks for that. Gonna buy a few as stated and report back with my findings.

I have had the same issue as other people with adaptor not connecting to Torque, but I saw this recommended and gave it a shot

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Diagnostic-Bluetooth-4-0-Scan-Tool-OBD2-Code-Reader-Vgate-For-Android-amp-iPhone-/321772510752?txnId=1581599536011

I have just been out to try it and can confirm it works! You don'tneed to tick the 'use alternate header' box in Torque for some Nissan cars that can't be read, but you do need to manually select the ISO 9141-2 setting for reading the adaptor (this should all be clear in the Torque settings under your car profile).

Good luck!

thanks Stan. I have been getting the connections with Torque but the dongles and software have been failing to talk to the ECU. Its getting frustrating that each time I buy one, I get the same issues.

Can you confirm that real time data can be gatherd through Torque on your dongle in question? If so, I'll go ahead and get one.

thanks buddy

One thing here some will work with UK spec and not with JDM

I have a WIfi Dongle (UK only) (ELM 27)

and a Blue tooth T Dongle - (JDM) (ELM 27)

Both cheapies on Ebay < £10 for both

The WIFI dongle works with Dashboard Commander on my UK Honda but not on the JDM Zed

The Bluetooth one works with Car Gauge pro no problems at all and has a lot of PIDs available

Yeah I have been testing it out this morning. I only had a quick play but it was showing revs, coolant temp and speed on the main gauge page. I didn't load up any more gauges or anything but I guess as it was showing those, it would show anything else?

I did find it had about half a second delay showing the revs climbing, whether or not this is normal I dunno

It also talked to the ecu to check fault codes etc

I paid originally £120 from Germany when they first came out. They're a lot cheaper now and more compact. Mine has a long cable with it for the device but then I can plug this into my laptop for even more functionality. I guess you get what you pay for.

Great products though
