Struggling Decision

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

Thought it would be best to ask the experts as I'm struggling to come to a decision over my next car.

I originally come from a Toyota background, Altezzas, GT-Fours, Altezza Turbo, just recently sold my NA-T Supra and wanted to move into the Nissan market and try out some new cars for the next few years, I do a lot of road trips to Europe so after something reliable, aesthetically looks great and drives good aswell.

So my choices are:

'54 Nissan 350z GT (Seen a Nismo kitted one Im interested in), looks clean, 80k odd mileage, my taste all round and looks well looked after. I have test drove one, and I was happy with everything. However in the back of my mind plays a scenario, my friend two years ago had a 350z, 54 plate (same as this one I've seen), 80k mileage when bought, 3 owners, paperwork was all in check, very well looked after, 1,000 miles later the engine went pop...from a lot of reading I cannot find anything that really causes these to go bang apart from high mileage...this is really putting me off choosing it as well as my next choice...

'93 Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T Type M (RWD, Bigger brakes, LSD etc), RB20DET and honestly I can say hands down the cleanest one, if not the cleanest import I have ever seen, 34k km confirmed on the clock, not an inch of rust, fresh import last year, around 240bhp (minimal mods from stock 215bhp), I have Recaro SR3 Confetti seats to go in as kept them from the Supra and stock R32 seats are crap, but they are all round super nice to drive, handle very well, paintwork is factory and spotless, the car is pretty much factory showroom condition.

Can anyone help with a decision here, I cannot for the life me decide, I really like and have wanted both for many years, but argh I'm just not sure.

All help appreciated, maybe you guys can persuade me!

Jon

Sounds like you have already decided on the R32..? It will certainly climb in value vs the Zed if thats something you feel is important. Zed is a heavier GT car, loads of power, lazy driving style with the gears. In terms of the Zed engine, they are good for many miles, they go pop if poorly maintained like any engine.

You see thats where Im really not sure, aesthetically I really do like both, if the R32 was beat up it would be a no brainer tbh, but I'm a car enthusiast, and more of a handling over straight line speed kind of guy. Just the Zed was such a nice place to be, great sound system (Bose), comfort for long traveling I'd assume, obviously the 32 being a '93 the interior is old (well kept) but old, I don't mind it but newer interiors are better.

How do the zeds handle under heavy driving, especially on a B road, in their stock form?

Welcome aboard Jon. :welcome:

Can't help with your decision but all I'll say is the same as Coldel above "they go pop if poorly maintained like any engine".

My Zed was a 2003 with 80K plus miles on it when I bought it originally, ...spent loads on it including having it supercharged to over 430Bhp when it was at around 92K miles odd. Sold it on and was still running great & on OEM clutch & flywheel I might add.

If well maintained these cars can comfortably go well over the 100K miles mark and further.

Skylines are no more reliable than 350's, I do like an r32 though, but, only the full fat gtr and even then I wouldnt want one over a 350 if Europe road trips are on the menu. Only reason being, they are old and will feel very basic in comparison. Only you can decide.

Hello and welcome I have 93k on my Z and it's still bulletproof with no rattles and running sweet (P3 service @ cougar store booked for next week 🔥🔥) , it give me comfortable cruising with the ability switch to power driving at will . I love my Z and you are right it's not a bad interior to be in ✅💫💉🔥. If well looked after these car will give many miles of motoring pleasure 💫💫

It's not a milage issue with Zeds it's people running the oil low or/and using wrong fuel.

This is your reason. Best option is to buy a forum car as you can then trust it's been looked after better. Or at least gauge how well it's been looked after from the person who owned it.

Youre right but it is important to remember that forum car doesn't always equate to well looked after.

Remember when CalZed bought Dene8 zed........engine blew about 3 months later.

Bradders purchase from a member is also a cautionary tale.

Still it is the way you can be most comfortable with a cars recent history.
