  1. The website wasn't posted purposely, I just happened to be posting something when photo was taken. At the end of the day all the forum politics is bollox anyway - this is a great forum, and so is the other one (still unsure if I can mention the name!, pathetic really!)
  2. I have being meaning to build a CarPC for nearly three years now, and have finally decided to do it! Thanks to Hynder (Alan), nrez123 (Nathan) and Tricky-Ricky who have given me inspiration in their posts. Ordered some bits, and they arrived yesterday... Kit list to date (I will update this as I go): Zotac ION N330 IONITX F-E Motherboard http://www.wstore.co.uk/index.asp?pg=pr ... rod=686875 Akasa Mini_ITX Case http://www.wstore.co.uk/index.asp?pg=pr ... rod=727542 WD Scorpio (Black) - 320GB Internal Hard Drive - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - Buffer: 16MB Kingston 2GB DIMM 240-pin - DDR II - 800MHz - CL6 - 1.8 V - Unbuffered - Non-ECC Memory Belkin Mini USB Bluetooth Adapter - Bluetooth 2.0 EDR - Class 2 Windows 7 Pro 32 bit Centrafuse 3 Auto It only took 10 mins to assemble all the bits. I then installed Windows 7 Pro - boot time is about 30 seconds but that's not an issue as the PC will be in 'sleep mode' when not in use (sleep boot less than 5 seconds) The case I bought has DC input (12v) but I am not sure how this will cope in the car so I might need to get a Carnetix one which can handle cranking voltage and has intelligent shutdown if battery drain is too much etc. I will spend the next couple of weeks 'bench testing' before I install in the car. I tried to pair my iphone with the PC, but it was a complete pain in the a$$ and I gave up after an hour - then I found a piece of software called 'Bluetooth Soleil' and it work a treat! (I later found out that this was included with Centrafuse 3 ) Installed Centrafuse 3 and this is a great front end (but I will try others like Roadrunner etc.). Iphone pairing now works a treat - but I still havent worked out how to download contact list to CF yet. I am still undecided on what touchscreen monitor to use, so at the moment I am using VNC to connect to the box... Next on 'To Do' List: Find suitable SatNav software (USB GPS) Find decent front and rear cams (stealthed) Purchase Blatz cable and software Purchase USB I/O board to control various things in the car (inc finger print start) http://www.fusioncontrolcentre.com/Fusi ... /index.php Investigate voice commands (I have Dragon Speak 10) Skin CF3 That's all for now - but I will update as I go...
  3. If you are self employed or run a Ltd Company there are tax benefits to leasing, and you can claim part of the VAT back
  4. Cheers Ricky - I might take you up on your kind offer! Since posting this I have also looked at the Blazt cable and software and it seems as if this is the way to go (thanks to Hynder/Alan for info). From what I can gather the Blazt was designed for the Nissan CANbus and can therefore pick up far more info that the standard OBDII. Is you Blazt linked up to a CarPC or do you just plug in a laptop when needed? David
  5. Hi guys - I have heard a rumour that the standard OBDII reader doesn't work on early imports, and only the CAN-BUS and Consult work - is there any truth to this? I was planning on getting an ELM327 which is supposed to support the following OBD2 protocols: J1850 VPW J1850 PWM ISO9141-2 ISO14230-4 (KWP2000) ISO15756-4 (CAN-BUS) Anyone got an ELM327? Anyone got a standard OBDII reader in the South East area that I could plug in and test? Thanks, David
  6. post a new thread I want to know how you get on. I will Anders, when my bits arrive in the next day or so
  7. I have been meaning to build one of these for ages, but never got around to it. I finally ordered some bits today, including the same motherboard as Nathan - it has great reviews I intend running Windows 7 as well - but my main question is about power. How will you make the system power up when the car starts and power down (or sleep/hibernate) when you exit the car. Will this be automated or a simple on/off button? One of the cases I have looked at is this one http://misco.ie/ProductInfo/ProductInfo ... ode=162779 as it has built in DC-DC, but I am not yet sure how it will handle cranking
  8. I know many people are against this because of the dangers of loss of light output etc - but I have found a product that works! This is road legal and meets all MOT standards etc and unlike traditional film is a doddle to fit - it took me less than 20 minutes to do both rear lenses - its cheap as well - £10.99 for a sheet (enough for both) Some pics (excuse crappy iphone)... Before pic: Light off and remove backing sheet - dont be put off by creasing, this stuff is flexible! Trim (with scalpel provided in kit) Once happy that there is no bubbles/creases, apply heat to activate glue: Fitted back on car: and a close up - this is the secret of FlyEye - unlike traditional tints, it actually lets loads of light through a couple of pics at night to show that light does get through... David
  9. Whilst MS Office is available on the Mac OSX, it runs very slow compared to the PC version, and DOES NOT include Outlook (although this is supposed to be coming out) - the Mac equivalent to Outlook is called Entourage and whilst it works with MS Exchange, it isn't all that good
  10. I seem to remember Big Phil getting me one off a car he was breaking - it was a long time ago
  11. sounds like a sticky switch - I had same on mine and replaced it
  12. for those that dont know - your vehicle paint code is etched on the VIN plate in the engine bay
  13. This is a very old scam - basically when you hung up, he didnt and because he was the originator of the call the line stayed active - so when you picked the phone up again the line appears dead etc. He then hangs up and calls you back
  14. what colour is your car - it looks a really dark blue or is that the sky reflecting on your super black shine
  15. OHHH I forgot to mention!!!!!! Apparently, all middle and upper management are now being told to join UNISON (and other unions) and will be planning a strike so they can officially tell the public about this in an attempt to block the government from doing it
  16. A few years ago I worked for a US IT company that had a branch over here (they were the biggest supplier of IT equipment to the NHS - I actually worked on the contract for managed email for 1.2 million NHS employees) I lost count of the amount of meetings I had with NHS middle management that were basically overpaid, clueless civil servants - the only reason they worked there was because they couldn't get a real job in the private sector!!! So yes - getting rid of the slackers and spending money on nurses/doctors instead is definitely a good thing
  17. my first thought was it could be a good idea - privatisation introduces competition which means services have to be improved in order for them to survive etc HOWEVER - this isn't how its going to work - The NHS will still exist as an organisation (but getting rid of all the PHCT etc) BUT they will still have a form of monopoly for those that can't afford to go private - so basically we will all have to pay regardless
  18. If you havent got private health care (eg BUPA) - GET IT NOW as premiums are expected to go through the roof - I faxed my application off today and have secured a good premium
  19. I'm probably going to get in sh*t loads of trouble for posting this, but I have a friend who is senior management in the NHS, and he has been in crisis meetings all day..... The NHS is going to be Privatised! This hasn't even hit the press yet - so just remember when it does you heard it here first
