OK, pic heavy update ahead!
I just looked back through my thread and had to go back to page 8 to find the start of the CarPC build (August 1st!). After a few weeks work the PC sat on the dining room table until Boxing Day! After a pretty productive January, and a busy evening last night the CarPC is finally installed, setup and working! I now need to spend some time tweaking a few screens and gauges etc so it all looks awesome. But, safe to say I am really happy with the results!!!
It was originally meant to be a simple install with PC, kill switch & screen. Over Christmas this escalated into a full control panel with kill switches, buttons, LEDs etc. Not long after that I then though making a cool USB panel in the rear console would also be a good idea!
The main aim for this install (besides having access to a PC) was to make everything look at stock as possible! So when everything was closed up you would never know it was installed, and even when things were on show they looked like they were always meant to be there! To help with this plan I invested in a mini DIY Flocking kit.....(Flocking....with an 'L'....L!!). This allowed me to more closely match the finish of various Zed cubby linings. I am really pleased with the results of this, maybe more so than the PC!
So, on to all the pics of the build & finished article.
Background shows the PC test mounted into the base of the glove box. Foreground shows the DIY Build case/lid for the PC. Simple build with some MDF and a small air vent at the top which allows fresh air to be pulled down onto the CPU. This was covered in felt so it could blend in better inside the glove box.
Next up was my first 'Ninja Panel' tm. Which I have built into one of the upper letterbox style storage bins. This is the main control panel for the PC setup and allows for a number of different features - kill switches for both PC and screen power loops, PC reset button, Power & HDD LEDs & a temp gauge for the ambient air around the PC. Built from a strip of plastic and shaped to fit into the storage bin.
Flocked & test fitted
Next Ninja Panel was for the rear cubby on the centre console (where the Bluetooth module etc live). For this I wanted to have a small panel to allow for USB or aux input to the PC (to play MP3 players, and charge my phone). I started by building up a rough shape with MDF which replaced the fitted floor, added fibre glass & some flock. looks great in the flesh, photo doesn't really do it that much justice.
After a few swear words last night trying to connect everything together, it all (eventually) powered up nicely and worked!
