What was your very first car?

First car was an Austin A40 (1959).

Never written one off except to the breakers!

And if I knew then what I know now, my third car (my first brand new one) would still be with me. Best fun ever: 1971 Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 (with the BDA engine) - Chassis no: BB49KY42256

Now my money would have been on a Model T, John! ;):p

1988 Honda Civic 1.4 GL. Red with Fondmetal 14" alloys. Loved it to bits and did 126,000 happy miles together.

This was way before Civics became a Max Power car and they were only driven by housewives and OAPs. I was so frustrated that I couldn't get mods for it - oh, how things have changed.

Seriously underrated car though - 90 bhp, weighed very little and double wishbones all round. Quick enough to upset poorly driven 205 GTi's and R5 Turbos. :teeth:

I would have loved a mini back when I was a youngster. They were cheap as anything then. If you were skint you got an old mini - now you hardly ever see a proper mini - where have they all gone? My dad used to do them up from crashed - he had a 1275GT which was great at the time.

My first was a true "land yacht" -- '62 Chrysler 300 convertible. It had a push button gear shift. I bought it for $600 and soon sold it for $500. What a monstrous car! It didn't like to run whenever it rained. I don't really like to count this as my first. The first that I kept for a while was my baby (it was the first car I modified) -- '65 Pontiac GTO. :D

First car at 18 was a 1.1 fiesta, done it up to look like a fiesta si in blue. Second car was a xr3i, done up to a rs turbo replica, with high lift cams, vernier pulleys, powerflow exhaust system, 17" smiths alloys, genuine ford rs turbo body kit, the works, still wish i kept this car to today, was the envy at work as i work for fords. Not one rust spot, no welds, and at a G plate., it looked mint. After this and my 3rd car is a MG ZR, still got this and now the 4th the 350Z GT spec, Having two cars is a god send, the MG ZR for work and the fact it has five seats and the 350, my toy ! And all at the age of just turnt 21, i love life :teeth:

Did everyone really appreciate their 'crappy' car when they got it? Things are so different now. When I was 17 I would have been overjoyed to have access to any old car but when my own son was 17 and started having driving lessons he would only be satisfied with a certain standard of car with upgraded alloys etc etc. Granted he paid for it himself but if I'd have offered to get him a runaround for a few hundred he would have said no thanks and wouldn't have been seen dead in it!

Yeah dead right I appreciated it, I didn't care what it was it was mine and that I finally had the freedom, it could honestly have been anything.

And as proof of that last statement, in actual fact I swapped the knackered Metro for the "Flying Turd" - a B plate Mk1 Astra 1.3 in a stunning shade of brown. Yep, completely poo brown. Great 2nd gear on it though, I think thats what sold it to me. 18 years old and not a clue.

You remind me actually Nixy, your lad has a Mk2 Astra doesn't he? He wouldn't be interested in some shocks & springs would he??????

Think we had the same car Andy! Yup my first car was also a poo (metallic) brown 1.3 Astra. Or Opel Kadett as they were known in Germany. Did yours have the lovely beige interior?

Actually had an alarm on mine, not because of the car but because of the ICE I had in it. Man did I get some strange looks walking up to that heap of junk (love of my life at the time) and the alarm beeped  Happy days....

Yep, we certainly did mate - except yours was obviously a nicer model being metallic - mine wasn't!! But it certainly had that lovely complimentary beige interior with the brown piping and beige carpets. WHAT.......WAS........I.........THINKING

Do you know actually I remember like yesterday what I was thinking - it was all because it had more power and would wheelspin like mad!

Great cars weren't they Nixy? Reminds me of college - couple of the lads had em but proper, proper quick ones. One was on an old H plate (whats that? 1968 I think or something like that) a 1480, high lift cam, exhaust, well sorted suspension & brakes, a Jack Knight straight cut box (with a 50mph 1st gear!) etc etc etc. The thing would hit 130 and it got there quick but cos you're only about an inch off the ground it felt more like a plane!

Most of my life lived outside Blackpool and there's tons of proper country roads round there, had such a blast being in the passenger seat of those things flying round blind bends at 90 with your heart in your mouth :scare:

In 1978 my second ever car was a Mk1 1300 Escort with a 1600E engine (still with the 1300 gearbox) Brilliant to about 75 then sort of died. Great fun though :thumbs::thumbs:

My first car was a Morris Marina, and I still haven't forgiven my Father for that one !

The first car I wrote off ( after my Dads company car, and he still hasn't forgiven me for that one !!! ) was a Morris Marina !!!

From there on in I bought my own cars and it was P6 Rover 3500, SD1 3500, XJ6 Jags and 3.0 litre Capris thank you very much

I once bought an XJ12 Jag, which was my dream car at the time, but couldn't afford to go anywhere in it at 10.5 miles per gallon !!!

1971 - I think - 1.5 Hillman Hunter that overheated like mad. Used to drive up hills and free wheel down them

Never quite killed it and sold it in the end for a 1.3 Mk3 Ford Cortina in white with a thin red 'Starsky and Hutch' stripe down the side and loads of lights and tweeters on it - all fitted before I got it!!LOL

I too loved all my old bangers and got immense satisfaction from getting loads and loads of miles out of cars that cost nothing.

I can remember setting off on a journey and being overjoyed THAT WE GOT THERE!!!!!

I learned sooooo much about cars from those days of simple mechanics and necessity!!

Ming the VERY old

+1

You've just reminded me Ming, the Flying Turd's head gasket was gone too (very shortly after I got it) and I always had to have the heater on hot - when it went cold I knew it was time to top up the water
