The running costs are going to be the least of your problems once you contract Zeditis ;)

In 2009 I paid £10K for my Zed and have since spent nearly the same on mods (not added it all up yet, too scared)

Easily done

But zeds are our pride and joy

How long is a piece of string?

 

You have worked out and got answers to general running costs, mpg, servicing, tyres etc Just factor into the equation could you afford to do a clutch for example? Not trying to put you off but make you aware of something that could easily wear out and not a cheap fix :)

 

Twice as long as from the center to the end :thumbs:

Def hold back a bit of dollar for tidying up the Z when you get it.

 

I was lucky that a friend did a full service inc belts and all fluids when I bought mine. Then other bits like gearknob as mine was worn, refurb alloys as rays were peeling bad and decent exhaust (OEM was blowing a little). All adds up but worth it as all those changes really makes the Z feel like your own.

 

+1 It is the things you do to improve it that costs. My experience is -

 

Year 1 New exhaust (~£400) + free service, spark plugs and fan unit (warranty) from Nissan (P3 service + plugs normally ~£350 from Indy)

Year 2 Service + bits and bobs (~£500)

Year 3 The year I planned to sell it ! But I couldn't find a good enough alternative so decided to keep it for another couple of years....

New convertible roof (~£700)

New tyres (~£700)

New leather finish on steering wheel (~£100)

Refurbished wheels (~£160)

Paint correction (~£200)

A service later in the year

 

Wow, I better make sure the wife doesn't see this !

 

Though the depreciation is low now that it's 8 years old,

 

I thought I would do the same as you although my ownership is a grand total of 4 weeks! This is going to hurt but I might feel better writing it down ;)

 

Week 1 New exhaust £650

Week 2 service, front brake discs and pads, gearbox and diff oil and plugs etc £585

Week 3 paint job (needed as the bumper was showing 8 yrs of chips and bumps) £180

Week 4 Banana arms (both replaced as shot to bits) £500

 

'Cosmetics' in 4 weeks new gear knob, head unit and rev camera, stubby aerial, smoked side repeaters, led bulbs, clear reflectors and black badges all round £725

 

So total spend in 4 weeks including the car itself £8640 but on balance I now hopefully have a 2006 facelift roadster with fairly new tyres, refurbed wheels, very clean interior and exterior paintwork and fingers crossed nothing mechanically to sort out for another year or so!

 

One concern left is the roof which has a couple of small creases/holes appearing in the usual places so may end up at the end of the summer getting it sorted although local coach fitter said replacement should be less than £500 all in which seems to good to be true but will check that nearer the time :)

So had mine 6 months now. Needed a P3 service - £300, four new tyres - £depends on the quality you want, new discs all round - £300, 26mpg - normal drives to work and spirited drives and since buying an RDX stubby aerial- £13, Zeditis has kicked in and now planning to spend £1k plus later this year on engine/exhaust, plus a couple of interior bits I want to sort. This is before road tax and insurance, isn't a cheap car to run as people have said many times above but the smile it puts on my face is worth it and I don't have any ideas of selling it soon.

wow seems i'm definitely in the minority lol had my zed 2 years and 3 months now, so far only extras I've bought were a stubby for £8 and an exhaust for £425, but that was because the old one started blowing, so it needed doing.

 

Other that that, its been a P1 and P2 service ~£300, 4 new midrange tyres ~£450(Hankooks and Falkens) and then a few months ago the original 11 year old front discs needed replacing, along with new redstuff pads ~£300 fitted.

 

next up will be some new rears (£280 fitted) but then after that theres very little else I want to do, other than drive it!

Just don't come to many meets/shows or you bank will be empty!

Ok.... . Come on guys... Lol the beast ain't that bad to run....

If you stay away from any mods and faffy little things like badges, aerials,gear knobs and such like you will be good...

 

It's up to to you how much fuel you use... If you work out your average about 300miles per £85 fill up should get a good estimate.... That is with v power..... And a lot of tear arsing about..... Never had a £100 top up yet and I am in the back end of nowhere in Scotland where my nearest shell garage is 30 miles away...

When you get her, make sure you have about 3/4 mm all round on the tyres... That will easy last you the year unless you are constantly thrashing her...

Do recommend oil changes when you get it.... Depending on your garage and tools.... Go with engine first... Then gearbox and diff.... But these can wait...

A set of pads all round is relatively cheap sticking to standard.... But again....have a look to see what your getting... If it's past its mot recently and no notifications... 2/3 k should be no problem.

But like all cars... Anything can happen.... And unfortunately if it does... It's gonna cost you if you can't do it yourself...

 

Overall as standard and in good condition and looked after.... They are like tanks.....

 

If it does break.... Is it going to affect your life massively if you can't afford to repair it.. And having it sit in the garage as an expensive paperweight.

I have no idea about Z values but I suspect they aren't dropping that quickly any more if at all.

 

Zedlitis is a major issue though, and unfortunately even when you sell the Z it doesn't go away, it simply moves onto the new car you have bought :)

Going to be going from a 1.2 polo 55bhp to a 350, should be interesting.

Polo to a Zed, awesome!! Only 220 odd bhp difference!

 

Zed pedals will feel heavy in comparison, just be careful with that right foot! I would honestly drive a few Zeds so you get to feel what they are like. I drove 5 in one day and they all felt different to one another. Just worth doing as the first one you drive you will definately think "oh wow this is amazing I want one!", just dont buy one when you are all excited without comparing it to others out there.

Fuel costs aside for the ridiculous mileage I was doing in mine, depreciation was by far the biggest killer. If you buying into the low end of the zed market, I think the depreciation is hardly anything, if anything at all. But when you start spending £15k upwards (probably 370z market now to be fair) then you get stung by a much bigger drop in price. I paid about £16k for my zed and sold it for just over £9k 18 months later. Which worked out at about £5500 per year depreciation. The original owner paid something in the region of £34k for the car when it was new, so over the first 4 years it halved in value by the time I came to buy it.

 

Looking at one near me, which is being sold arround 7k, the front two tyres and the auxilarry belts both need changing, going to see if the dealer will do them if I buy it.

Personally id rather the dealer dropped the price a bit rather than fit new tyres. They will nearly always fit the cheapest nastiest tyres they can get. Whereas if they just drop the price by £300 to reflect the cost of new tyres then you can get some decent ones of your choice. Also make sure they match the rear tyres!

 

Im surprised your insurance company didnt have a stroke when you got a quote for the zed. I presume you have got an insurance quote? Even though I had 18 years NCB and years of driving high performance cars & motorbikes, I really struggled with insurance when I got mine, simply because I was driving an old Golf GT TDI at the time and they felt it was too much of a jump going from a oil burner to a 309bhp zed. The "specialist" insurers were even worse with some saying they`d only insure me if id driven/owned similar high performance cars over the last 18 months etc...

Cheap as chips......until you play the clutch lottery. Then budget for £800 min.

 

As Dan said budget for £1500 a year and you'll have a really well cared for car with an ample slush fund to spend on maintenance and goodies.

I've had my car since 2011 and had to replace x1 full set of tyres, x1 full set of disks, x2 front pads, x1 set rear pads and the exhaust. Add in servicing, insurance and tax works out £1500+ a year without fuel. Everything else has been optional but I don't regret it :)
