Insurance for 18 year old on a 350z?

I was looking to get a 370z in exchange for my 59 reg Insignia VXR. That's a V6 2.8 Turbo so I didn't think the 350z or 370z would be much more.

The company I am currently insured with won't quote me for both :(

The best quote I got was £4500. You can get a decent 350z for £7000 so there's no point in paying over half that in insurance.

Is anybody else on here my age and been able to get reasonable insurance?

Sorry to be another young guy complaining about insurance

Thanks

I feel your pain on the insurance mate!

I ended up buying an ST at 18, used it for a few years, as soon as I hit 21 I bought myself a 3.4 porsche cayman s, which I modifed to death and the insurance on that was £1000 - VERY Reasonable, you just need to wait it out until you hit the magical age of 21! I am now 22 and the 350z costs me £600 - its not worth paying extreme amounts for insurance costs, put that towards a better car, or in a pot until your 21 :)

Both times have been with admiral

Unfortunately buddy you're the worst age and insuring the worst type of car.

We were only discussing the other day some bloody ridiculous quote someone had for a crappy astra or some such drudge wagon......that was up into the 1000's.

You could try a specialist but many wont touch you - having experiance of driving a powerful car like the Insignia might help though as some take this sort of thing into account.

A few tips for you.. bear in mind theres some things you can fiddle with and others that will make insurance void.

1- look at putting ur mum +/or dad as named drivers. This brought mine down by 1k. But check for both, mum only, dad only and see which result is best. I say parents as their generally older, have their own car and have high ncb.

2) look at different parking locations. For me it was more expensive, to park on the driveway and cheaper to park on "a lit street". This is generally because a drive tells you which house you will find the keys in. And stealing from house for car keys does happen. Luckily I can choose drive or street as we have both, again just make sure you can justify your answer.

3) make sure your job is correct. Theres 2 titles for my job, airman and soldier. Soldier has higher insurance cost due to our "fear no death" supposedly attitude. But my actual rank in the raf ia "airman" which is cheaper. I phoned the insurance to check this was okay, and saved me 500pound.

4) up your excess. The eifference between 250pound and 750pound excess on main insurance quote is massive. The reason, if its 750pound your less likely to claim.

5) talk to them about 10 months insurance for 1 years ncb. This is cheaper and you get 1 year ncb at 10month point.

All in all, details you could change and justify, change and see how the price differs. Little things you think wont matter, are the things that change insurance cost.

I got mine from 2,700 to 650pound.

Also another quick tip on the insurance

IF you insure the car 1 months in advance its cheaper than doing it on the day.

however, IF you buy the car and want it insured tomorrow for instance, on the likes of confused.com set the date 1 month in advance just for the quote purpose. accept the quote and when it takes you to the external company website (admiral) for instance. you can then set the time and date you want the insurance to begin (the day you buy the car, not the 1month in advance you just got quoted for).. and it doesnt put your premium back up :)

Hard to explain but im sure you get the jist of it.

+1, im sure its more expensive (only 50pound or so) but each month I tried it was more expensive towards the last few days

No idea but its worked for me for my last 3 cars lol.

Same as the parking on a street not your drive.... Doesnt really make sense, Its something along the lines of.... if someone sees your car, wants it, they know which house to break into for the keys...

if it's on the street it could belong to anyone.

But your right on the +1month thing. Makes no sense but has never not worked for me. I insured a buddy on a Mercedes GL, done the 1month trick and it came down by nearly £200. Granted that is a 70k motor, but it works, try it - every little is a bonus for youngsters on rip-off insurance.

thanks guys, just messing around on Gocompare.com, the first quote came up as £8000, got it down to £6300 so far by changes like parked in a lit street and 1 month in advance etc :)

Obviously £6300 is ridiculous but it shows I can get it down... will see if I can get under £3000 ;)

Best thing to do mate, is get an a4 notebook and write it all down. I think the cheapest you will get it is probably 1,5-2k for ur age.

Where you live is also a big factor. Difference for living in scotland compared to london is massive. If you are lucky enough to have 2 seperate living locations, check which is cheaper. You dont need to live majority in one, but you do need to be able to justify. I.e 3montb 1 location and 3 month the other location.

Again phone the company to check its okay and record the phonecall for your own insurance

Cheers,

I've been phoning around today and when I told the majority of companies my age they just thought I was joking around I think (especially around the 370z).

Admiral gave me a quote of £32,000 and said I had no chance insuring one at 18, he told me I'm better off sticking to a sensible car,

Another guy was saying how it's a lot more because it's a fast nissan, when the insignia has more power compared but quotes are a lot better with those.

Will take a lot of messing around online to get under 3k I think.. I tried most things on gocompare - adding my dad as the named driver and that got it down to £6300 at the lowest.

With all the comparison sites online i'm sure I'll find one that gives me a fair quote

Just a small (and not intentionally condescending......but inevitably might sound that way) piece of advice..........don't blow your load too early in life.

A 370z is more than most average humans can hope to own even when they're older and financially bedded down.

Granted for all I know your absolutely minted but personally I'd build up......perhaps go for something a similar but not the same (rx8 perhaps......much as I personally don't like them).

At 18 you are (if your anything like 95% of us) likely to be a 'rambunctious' driver or at least have the odd tendency to be so. A 300odd bhp arse wheel drive car worth 16-20k can be a painful way to learn.

I agree,

that's why I'm deciding to get a 350z rather than a 370z as I can get a 350z for £6-7k and so save about £8,000 from my Insignia - I'll spend that money on my business meaning I'll be better off in the future.

However, I don't want to go from the insignia to a 'boring' or 'normal' car, I just couldn't get used to it after owning a couple of fast cars for nearly a year.

I just don't want to waste money on the insurance as I'll regret it after.

Being truthful you are wasting your time.

No way will anyone touch you being 18. I waited till I was 20 the insurance was alot more

Affordable and I had built my self up to a 350z.

I'm with elefant at the moment And I'm paying £912. Wait a couple of years

I used to think I was the absolute dogs for having a Ford Cougar at 20............at 18 I was in a Vauhall Chevette (bear in mind that was the year 2000 so it was a bloody ancient car even back then!)
