Why am I so terrified of 100k?

If it's been looked after I'd have no worries about the mileage for that price, but what would worry me is expensive gearbox repairs looming, brake and suspension costs plus the possibility of electrical gremlins.

I bought a really lovely BMW, the only reason (apart from lack lustre power) that I decided to get rid of it was continual electrical bugs, nearly all down to sensors failing. Auto box rebuilds don't come cheap either.

Certainly a lot of car for little money B) If FMBSH you really should not have anything to worry about.

But i do know somebody that repairs Mercs for a living (autobody repairer) and he says they are not as well built as they used to be.

But i do like that

*sigh*

Im going to end up buying it aren't I.

Christ.......V8.

Hilariously i spent a hour negotiating a 12 quid reduction on my sky bill during the week.......then less than 72 hour later I'm looking at V8's!

I do love the look of that kit.

100k on V8 is nothing. Car should easily do 250k +. My JAG's just rolled over the 100k mark. But I do play the good old game of hunt the electrical gremlin. But repairs have been cheap. 2nd hand parts are plentiful. Only thing I would suggest is a gear box fluid change. Unless its in the service book as done recently. Those boxes need the fluid changing about every 80k.. not a Willy expensive job, just find a good auto gearbox specialist who knows the MB's.

From The launch of the C Class in 1996 or something to about 2006 they were ropey. Quality is on the up again though. This generation of MB is FAR better than the last.

Saying that, My dad just put his summer toy W129 through it's 7th MOT with him. Nothing required like the previous 6 MOTs. It's needed nothing at all since he got it, regular servicing and that's it!

I wouldn't buy a clk personally but if you put in a little more you can get an e55amg w211 the superchaeged one. The my dads old v8 was on 170k and was still sweet. With a clk I could be wrong but no airmatic no fibre optic bus so it will be straight forward. There isn't many gremlins bar if it has it the SBC pump.

Yikes I've never had a car with more than 35k.

My bro's clk55 went arse up and the gearbox had to get replaced. Great car though, gearbox problems aside , but a bit boaty, more cruiser than sports car tbh.

I'd be careful with high mileage stuff. Even though the engine is solid you've got to remember all the bushes and bearings will have done these miles also and could be deteriorating or perishing which could cause some bills.

i am exactly the same, even a few mates tell me I'm mental as you can buy a car thats got 25k and its been thrashed from new crap service history or a car thats been used and maintained every mile and never wanted for anything with 100+k on it and it will out last the lower milage one over and over but like you say having 6 figures on the dial is very scary!!

bushes etc are a doddle.

as long as its maintained well there is no issue.

the jag gear box is a merc box, and as long as the fluid is changed at about 80k they are good to go. i did mine at 100k and it was and seems fine.

the V8's hardly tick over, at 70 mph its about on 2.5 rpm so if the car has done lots of motorway miles the engine has only really ever been sat just above tick over  unlike 4 pots v8's don't have to work that hard and when they do its usually a very short burst to overtake etc. and its unlikely to have had the nuts ragged off it like the zed as its not a kids car. and the original price tag would have menat its been bought by someone who would have spent all their service cash etc at merc. so it should be well cared for.

The jags safe because it's usually bought by tweed jacket pipe smoking old men. The likes of the clk or cl or sl most up my way are owned by guys who punt Charlie and rip the balls out them Chasing evos.

My bros xkr was terrible, he had that when he was 22 and it had its whole ripped in for a week or two before getting sold because it was so bad. You never know what your getting. It's down to luck.

Most cars can be plugged in now and it will tell you how often it's bounce off the rev limiter, revd too etc.

A lot of car for your money, 45k when they were new so they seem to suffer very steep depreciation. 100k would only frighten me off it had 4 or 5 owners, I did 116k in my RS Turbo without any major problems and I'm sure that Mercs have a better build quality than Fords.

do love your descriptions

but you are right that with any big car like V8's etc especially if they are over 10 years old there is a small element of a lottery to buying them. i've never had a big worry as i have enough technical knowledge of cars that i can fix them myself. and i enjoy doing the work.

but for the car inept its probably best to stick to things that are either new or japanese or both.
