is my clutch going

To give you a rough idea, when my mate had his Zed, his clutch started to slip so he went for an uprated Exedy clutch and a lighter Fidanza flywheel.

Total cost including fitting was around £800 - £900 if i remember rightly, could be wrong tho.

Car was raised up to remove driveshaft, gearbox dropped out to access the clutch/flywheel, so it's labor intensive

 

+1 exedy clutch and fidanza fly all supplied by zmanalex, I think mine was around £800 in total with fitting. Compared to the £1800 price tag from the dealers just for parts.

To be honest even if the flywheel has some life left in it u should get the flywheel changed at the same time otherwise u will will have to pay the labour a second time once the flywheel goes too, which isn't cheap

 

It works out cheaper to have them both done at the same time

You are going to need a flywheel as well mate. Sadly thats another 350 quid. Few would suggest you only change the clutch as far as I know. :evil::x:x

 

you joking me I was hopeing the flywheel would still be ok . you saying I should really change it I wouldn't want to as money is tight at the mo.

 

Sorry but yes thats right. Chances are the flywheel may not be a long way behind

Alright mate, i am in the same position as you and mine is going in on thursday. is going to cost about £500 to change the clutch (exedy), including labour and an additional £350 for a dual mass flywheel. Not cheap but would rather get it all done than have to pay for the labour again to change the flywheel 6 months down the line.

Order in the flywheel - worst thing you can do is go for a clutch change, wait around watching the labour cost go up, only for them to take a knackared flywheel out, you are then left putting a broken flywheel back in with your new clutch and back there a week later to pay for all the labour again with the new flywheel going in.

 

Maybe chat with Alex about it, see if he can send you one over on a full refund if you dont open it/need it? Sorry Alex!

 

If the clutch is slipping, generally that means it has already started eating into your flywheel anyway :shrug:

 

It is expensive, I bought my Zed and had an extra £1k set aside for new alloys which within a month went on clutch/flywheel/cv joint :doh: but thats what owning japanese sports cars cost.

Is that right, changing the flywheel when you change the clutch plate? :scare:

I can see the logic of doing both together if both are worn but surely a metal flywheel will wear more slowly than a clutch plate which after all has a wearing surface.

There must be a thickness measurement that can be taken from the flywheel to give you some guide how long its got before a replacement is needed as with brake disc's.

I had thought a flywheel would out last at least a couple of clutch plates (assuming you don’t do racing starts all the time) before needing replacement? :headhurt:

 

This is written more in hope than with practical knowledge as mine cant be far away from needing replacement :dummy:

When a clutch slips raw metal is grinding against the flywheel and what I saw when the car was opened up was a knackered clutch and the flywheel, which was partially worn, with huge grooves cut into it where the worn clutch had gone down to the bolts and cut into the flywheel and knackared it - if you drive the car whilst the clutch is slipping this will generally occur, which is why if it is slipping, its usually too late to save the flywheel. Well, thats what I saw on mine anways :scare:

Damage to the contact surface on the flywheel isn't normally the issue unless you've let it really go one it's started to slip, Neil is right with the dual mass bit, with these the flywheel is effectively mounted on rubber connectors which give a little when you engage the clutch, it gives you a softer engagement, but on most cars these rubber mounts wear, I've had a flywheel go on a focus st (at 47k miles!) where the mounts just gave up end result was the remainder of the flywheel went bang, replace the fly at the same time for piece of mind :thumbs:

by the sounds of it to do both is better also with the lighter fly it should rev a little better. also Alex said the fly should never have to be changed the fadanza 1 if I am right. someone said 234 pound with the gearbox oil change. is that good price to fit the fly and clutch. also is there a special gearbox oil to be used?

Ask Alex to price up some gearbox oil and some molislip as well,then you know they right stuff is going in and your box will be very nice after.

 

£200 is about right for a clutch chnage. it's down as a 3.5 hour job :)

 

 

Correct fluids also in stock as well as the correct clutch and fly combos :thumbs:

Mate, my clutch never slipped but got very heavy with a high bite point. Dealer recommended replacement. Mine's a 53-plate with ~65k miles on the clock.

 

Enter ZMANALEX! New clutch, new dual-mass flywheel, gearbox oil and molyslip all supplied at unbeatable prices in double-quick time. Found a local Jap-specialist to do the work for me. All done and dusted, including labour, for just under four figures :thumbs: (try getting a quote for the same from a Nissan dealer..... over £2k?!).

well i all booked in i have ordered the whole chabang from alex who was helpfull and quick to sort out. pocket is lighter now tho and just hope that the garage i taking it to can do the job good as they said they have not worked on 350z yet as up my way there not so many. but the boss owns a s2000 and one of the other guys has a scooby and they have worked on a few track cars. :) and seen only good reviews .

Shouldnt be rougher mat be a little bit noisy at tickover - I have to say I don't notice with my lightweight fly - but I can't hear much above the screams of the SC anyway! ;):lol:

Seeing that you put your occupation as "fast driver", I bet you'd be back on here asking about the cost of a new diff, which tyres to pick, gear box rebuilds......

im similarly in a conundrum

 

my clutch doesnt slip, where you say it looses revs, but theres a like a little click when it engages gear

 

tried driving reasonably, to be fair on the run to work you cant accelerate quickly, but still the same, been happening for a few weeeks now

 

nothing run with the pul or engagement of the gear just a little click so im thinking of the pedal being loose

 

anyone heard of this?

 

if not, gonna have to get it looked at when the alloys get refurbed in the spring
