Running costs versus and Evo 8.....

Anybody got an idea whether an Evo8 would cost ALOT more to run than the Zed?

I have a friend who has been trying to swap his Evo8 for my Zed for ages, i finally had a go in it at the weekend and i must say that the power is addictive, its think its an fq320? that number means nothing to me lol.

I just want to know that in the real world its worth swapping, i mean looks and style the Zed wins hands down, but the the power of the evo... plus it counts as a 4 door saloon so will keep her indoors happy because its got enough room for future children lol !!

Cheers.

NismoDave (the guy that had my zed before me) moved on to an Evo FQ320. He said the Evo would never beat the zed in the looks department but its a step up in terms of performance and is happy with his choice.

Apparently economically its about the same if nothing much has been done to it performance wise.

A mate of mine has an Evo7 (running around 340BHP). A £50 tank of petrol lasts about 200 miles. Parts are cheaper for the Evo than they are for the Z. He recently fitted PF front disks & pads for about £350  Its pretty evenly matched with my Z even though i'm running more power.

The way it puts the power down is just insane, seeing it launch from the toll booths a few weeks ago was mental :surrender:

They don't look as good as the Z but IMO they drive better :)

If that is 'her indoors' in your avatar then I would do whatever you can to keep her happy

I've looked at them before and pretty much came to the conclusion as everyone else has. No matter how you look at it, they are ugle, chavvy looking things. The power/performace etc is impressive but you do pay for it. I know a lad who made a midly tuned FQ who struggled to get over 18mpg. Service every 5k miles (or less?).

And you look like a chav driving them! :p

Otherthanthat they are quite appealing. EvoV & Evo VI are for me, looks wise. You can get a 4 dirt cheap at the mo, but god only knows who's owned it.

I think it's the same with most performance cars in general, people buy them to drive and enjoy, and you'll find as they get on and change hands they'll get looked after less and less. I feel this in particular toward Evos. I know I'm stereotyping and I'm also aware this isn't for everyone who owns one, but just think in your head what type of person might buy an Evo or Scooby....

Am I a car snob?

Having said all that, I've seriously looked at them before, so I guess in certain cars you can over look all the bad points and just enjoy the good. We do with the Zed, after all...

(still didn't buy one though!)

I had a WRX STI which is similar spec to the EVO

My advice would be don't do it, yes they are very quick 0-60 and they are fun for the first few months of ownership then after that you just feel like you have joined the Chav brigade... You get people with gold teeth and a burberry cap flashing their lights at you thinking that you are a chav too even though your car is 10 years newer and you actually pay for car insurance....

I dont want to go back to that place :cold:

The Zed is a cruiser and gorgeous, when people see you they think your B) ... Women gyrate on my bonnet at traffic lights... You dont get that in an EVO

When your 11 year old nephew tells you your car is chavvy then thats the time to get shot

3 categories for cars, everything fits into 1 off these pretty much

- performance

- looks

- comfort

It doesnt come down to running costs in this possible swap. You need to decide which boxes you want to tick. a bit like stats on a car in a computer game.

Evo.

- Performance - 7

- Looks - 3

- Comfort - 1 (due to steering wheel, boost controller and uncomfortable seats)

350z.

- Performance - 5

- Looks - 7

- Comfort - 8 (due to leather, gadgets galore etc)

All boils down to what you want out of a car. 350z is a good all rounder and the evo is soley made for performance.

Couldn't agree more.

I looked at Evos before getting the Z but decided I wanted some creature comforts and dignity as well as a bit of speed.

Still quite like the Evo X tho.

My brother has an FQ320 and I have a Zed - Ive driven both extensively. :)

The MR FQ Evo's actually have very good seats and a decent equipment level (insluding 2 back doors and 2 back seats), so I think you are being a bit harsh on the comfort thing, but Id agree, the thing my brother dislikes most about his Evo is the chavvy looks.

Performance, the Zed is a brilliant car to drive and great fun with it, but the Evo destroys it in pretty much every department (other than drifting ;)) The Evo is also much easier to mod - with a decat and a remap you are looking at 400/380 from one, which I think you would agree is adequate. Add 4WD and the AYC and the Evo is up there as the second fastest point to point car Ive ever driven (after a GTR) :)

Running costs are a shedload more on the Evo though, particularly if you do some miles. 18mpg is about as good as you are going to get without driving like your Mum, they need servicing by an Evo specialist every 4K miles ideally, they go through tyres very quickly, insurance is going to be higher and things like clutches will go more quickly too.

TBH, drive it and see what you reckon. Both are very good cars, but the Evo is not for everyone ;)

I have every respect for the Evos from a technical perspective, but it seems to me that they were designed purely for performance with very little thought to the finer aspects.

Well, seeing as they are a rally developed evolution model thats hardly surprising is it?? ;)

Im not sure what "finer points" you are referring too, other than the way it looks and by their nature rally cars generally are ugly beasts. They are quite happy pootling round town, they are 10 times as practical as a Z33, easy to drive, pretty safe, decently built, reliable, easy to get parts for and find mechanics and experts and have really good aftermarket support, both with modifications and also general information.

The fact that an Evo won the WRC a few times and has a pretty incredible racing pedigree is neither here nor there either ;)

Hello,

First post but just had to say something when i saw this.

I had an evo 8 (was a 260 remapped to 350bhp )just before i got the Z. Performance wise it was amazing and i loved the car. Servicing is 4500 miles and costs way too much. Especially when it needs the big service and the engine has to come out etc. I used it as an everyday car (same as i use the Z) and though it never failed to make me smile, i did feel that it was just a money pit (it seemed to spend more time in the garage getting bits done than driving it)which took some of the enjoyment out of it. I know many people dont keep up the service schedules however if you dont then things will go wrong. Just my personal experience but the Z feels a lot more indestructible (probably in my head though lol).

Anyway to cut a long story short, for me the running costs were way too high compared with the Z.

The evo does make you feel like a driving god in some respects however its only because it compensates for my lack of driving talent. For sheer enjoyment i do prefer the Z, though everyone is different.

Anyway good luck with your choice

I have had 3 evo's over the years. I would take a 350 over any of them, far more character. Engine sounds dull and they are so clinical. On road nothing is faster but its not a great challenge. On track an under steering dog unless you go so disgustingly fast into a bend that you get all four wheels sliding. AYC needs servicing often too at £100+ a go and the diffs were £2000 last time I checked, they really don't last forever especially if the pump goes. MPG is one of the worst going, 4wd and so little turbo lag its always on boost so they are always drinking heavily. I used to average 15mpg in my Evo.

There are just as many chavs in Zeds as there are in Evos. You only have to look at some of the abortions that pop up on here to see that

I don't know about that Ian mate. Aside from the odd pink set of wheels and one Havoc body kit we a pretty refined crowd on here..

Go on the Evo or Scooby sites and you will be soon wearing Burberry and auditioning for Goldie Looking Chain. I don't think we are at that stage just yet ;)

I have driven a mates 400bhp evo X with all the bell and whistles and it is devastatingly effing quick! Better IMO than the 550bhp scooby i had between ownership of an Elise 111R and my first zed!

These rally specials maybe FQ and have decent levels of comfort than credited with but are chavvy IMO and attract a lot of attention in all the wrong quarters. The result was i got banned for a year for excessive speeding when i may have got away with it in a zed or a similar cool car and i always felt the driving involvement quite detached especially on track :surrender:

Its almost the same analogy with the new GTR! But at the end of the day you have to work out what you want from the car. If your only concern is running cost and servicing then it will be a bad move! But if you want a lot of car for the money and don't mind the drawbacks, then you have a winner on your hands with a big boot, five doors, four seats and good reliability if its well tuned and or taken care of
