+1 and shoot RAW if your camera supports it. Makes me laugh these days when people say shooting digital is difficult as you only get one chance, you should have tried shooting in film, then you really only got one chance! You had to wait until you developed the image before seeing what had worked or hadnt and it cost a fortune to test stuff out as developing was expensive even if you did it yourself (I did a City and Guilds in photography, so only had to pay for my paper).
Practice, practice, practice, thats what its all about. Just like heel/toe, selecting ISO, aperature and shutter speed all become second nature, so you only need one shot at a erm shot! Try taking the same shots over and over, chaging the settings and see what they do, it doesnt take long to work it all out what shutter speeds or aperatures will give you the desired effects with a good book helping you along. Get used to second guessing what settings you need and shoot RAW and you will get a decent amount of photos that come out good enough to print as RAW can save a few mistakes if you were close to the mark.
