the daughter (11 yrs old) is quite talented in tuned percussion (being in the British National Childrens Orchetra :teeth: ) and we've now been told she has to add to her repertoir by learning kit

to keep the noise level down in the house we're aiming at electronic as opposed to accoustic, so we've been pointed in the direction of a Roland TD-11KV http://mwstoreonline...ronic-drum-kit/ - which retails at £1100 :scare: :scare: :scare: or go for the cheaper option http://mwstoreonline...ronic-drum-kit/ at £800 :scare: :scare:

drummers out there - advice please

At the moment I would go for the cheaper option. Unfortunately when I was learning this wasnt an option and I played with headphones on so all the family and neighbours could hear was the drums.

I use a Roland HD-1, which is surprisingly decent for the little it costs. It's lacking on actual feel for the kick pedal, but otherwise I'm quite happy with it. It's now been updated with a more intelligent control box so worth a try before jumping into the higher end.

As always though, try before you buy, if she's that talented then you may have to cough up sadly.

the main difference in the cost appears to be the drum heads (mesh head as opposed to the more plastic type)

Yeah, the snare is the same but the toms differ. Doesn't bother me as a practice kit, but ultimately would it hold someone back? Maybe.

Even then mesh heads are so different in feel to an acoustic kit though, so I'm not convinced.

The pros and cons are

1. she's good and who are we to hinder her progress

2. the mesh drum heads have better feel

3. buying the more expensive one, we are unlikely to have to upgrade

4. its bloody expensive

1. the cheaper one is still bloody expensive (but cheaper)

2. she's still learning and this one should be good enough for now

3. this is technically a secondary instrument

4. we will have to buy a 5 octave merimba in the next few years - minimum cost £6000 - more likely cost about £12,000 - http://mwstoreonline.co.uk/product/roland-td-11k-v-compact-series-electronic-drum-kit/ :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare:

Sounds like you should put her up for adoption - before long you'll be forced to sell cars by the sounds of it :-)

For Sale 350z - genuine reason for sale, may part ex for a Merimba....

Is second hand not a option. I bet there are a lot of wanna be drummers out there who bought all the gear and then gave up. (I promise I don't have experience in this)

I had the Roland TD4 k pretty sure I found it on gumtree and got it for 400 quid. Was good for a beginner. It was mainly pads but the snare was the mesh type.
