I had the same dilemma, my dad and brother are both car mechanics, my dad is now in his 49th year of doing his job, he can count Rod Stewarts Jag collection as one of his clients in the past and has worked on Ferraris Porsches etc - I would have him on a 350z over any random Nissan dealer spanner monkey who is just blitzing through Nissan Micras as a job every day of the week. There are many other good independents out there in a similar situation, TGM for instance in Surrey, when you go into their yard they have six competition race cars they have built, I don't think the majority of Nissan dealership mechanics who would service you car would know where to even start in terms of building a race car. You will also find indies will work a lot harder to look after their reputation than someone working in a dealership, if the indie gets it wrong they lose their livelihood.

As for stamps, anyone can stamp a book - its easy, you can do it yourself if you like. But you can't (as easily) forge a book of receipts for all parts you have put on the car - when I sold my Zed and my VX220 both buyers were much more interested in looking at the receipts in order over time and ensuring work was carried out and parts replaced. So make sure you keep EVERYTHING even down to a £3 receipt for an o ring or something that looks very insignificant.

Main dealer while in warranty, as soon as out of warranty go to a good indie. I use a motorsport specialist who do all my work. They build race cars, and do work for hangar 111, so i guess they can cope with my old jag. They looked after my S2000, 350z etc. Reputation and trust count for alot with garages.

You may wish to consider Lockwood and Greenwood in Audenshaw, Manchester. They have had some good referrals on this forum.

When I am shopping for the next zed I would be more likely to walk away form one with a NIssan service history (unless it was from one of the good HPCs) - and would value one more that had stamps from known independents on here :)

I keep a spreadsheet with every part in order with mileage, cost, and explanation.

My 370z is still in warranty and I got the main dealer where I purchased the car to do a P3 service as part of the purchase deal.

In the meantime, I have approached my local main dealer for prices on servicing for next time around.

P1 - £199

P2 - £299

P3 - £369

It will be out of warranty when the next service is due so might look for a local indy.

Any recommendations for Wolverhampton area ?

My Zed has her 10th birthday this year, I've had her for two and have never been to a stealership. Although previous owners had diligently forked out thousands of pounds in the preceding eight years and the service book has nine stamps in it and I have a folder full of receipts which I add to each time I service her. If something needed fixing that I didn't have the tools or couldn't do I'd visit an indie.
