My 911 (996 Carrera 4) - (Now Sold - pg 7)

I was looking at getting a 996 basically because they are a cheap porka.

When i looked into it i found out the reasons why which have already been mentioned on here. (toyota showed them how to do mass production to save the company)

My eldest said why worry just buy it, run it for a while and then sell it.

 

Thing is i usually buy and plan to keep for a long time so didn`t feel like i wanted to do that hence i felt i wanted to have something i could enjoy and not worry about.

The deciding factor was a report i read on the net where an owner said ` its like driving along with a live hand grenade behind you and you never know when its going to go off`

I think the honest answer for me was i could afford to buy one but not afford to fix it if it went bang so stayed clear.

 

Each to their own just ask yourself if you can sleep at night dreaming about. IMS bearings, porus blocks and cracked cylinder liners.

The failure rate is meant to be about 5% which in production terms is huge..........be careful.

Don't do it to me...!!!

 

I need to wait until the end of March before i can get one as i've got a huge project at work so doing lots of miles until then, so i'd rather put these on the RRS than a Porsche. Out of interest though whats the mileage and have you got any pics? B) Not sure on the blue though so will be interested to see.

Scary, this kind of thing worries me and makes me lean towards a 997. I've still not gone and done my research yet - Dan (or anyone else), you mentioined earlier about the 997.1 being similar to a 996, do they suffer from these same 'hand grenade' problems or would it be a much more sensible buy than a 996?

Tempting, but looks a little too ordinary for me. Gixxer's looks more up my street, although i think im going to be looking closer to £11k to get one that looks similar (but not as good - im not underestimating the value of yours there gix.)

997.1 engine is essentially the same as the 996. Less prone to d-chunk issues, but the IMS and bore scoring applies just the same sadly. Likewise the 986/987.1 Boxster and 987.1 Cayman.

 

Personally, I'd buy the best condition high-mileage 996 you can find. Less IMS risk as if it's not gone in 100k miles it probably won't, and pretty much zero depreciation.

When i used to be into BMW's there was a very rare oxblood leather interior which looked very similar to this, but i couldnt find it anywhere in the UK at the time and i wanted it so badly.

If you need an extra pair of critical viewing eyes, I'm about Saturday.

Funnily enough I think the interior looks good too. It's a possibility for the E type.

Cheers Leon but my bro is coming with me. :thumbs: This will be the first one i've looked at. I called that specialist in Knutsford today and had a great chat with him, Gave me quite a few things to check. However i asked him what he would do in this situation, and it was quite a depressing answer. He said he'd get the inspection done including bore scope check (which i would be doing anyway) but also that regardless of it's history, he would spend £1100 pretty quickly and get the IMS uprated and a couple of other bits done to make sure it's as right as can be. This is a bit off putting to me (on a 15 year old car that i dont intend to keep for the long term.)

Thanks for scaring me to death. Every other thread is IMS or £8k rebuild.

 

Looks a good, solid car. Do you know who you're using for your PPI yet?

 

Hopefully the place in Knutsford near me which i mentioned - only trouble is they reckon they're fully booked until April! They said to give them a call though after i've seen the car and they'll see if they can fit me in.

Didn't mean to scare you, those are great links and very informative mate, 1 part shows him replacing the ims but the rest is a good read

 

I have to admit Porsche paranoia is very common, hence them having a lot of owners in short periods but it is still a small % to the amount of cars sold

I wouldn't change the IMS bearing on a car of that age and mileage. If it hasn't gone yet, it probably won't do. Much more common and risky (hence the recommendation of the boroscope, a must-do) is the possibility of scoring or d-chunk, which isn't as big a repair but still not great.

 

It's a 10% risk tops, and really that's nothing for what is such a great car and a great ownership experience. Do it.

Good luck mate, check the radiators, both coolant and a/c, they are open to the elements ( I fitted mesh in my front grills. Also look at the condition of the coolant reservoir as they can become brittle with heat

Like I said I had mine 4 yrs and changed the brake discs and pads in that time, I did have ninemeister change the coolant reservoir but it wasn't leaking I just fancied something off my warranty :lol:

Power delivery and handling are totally different to a 350 and takes a bit of learning to appreciate fully

If you look into common faults on most cars they become scary
