Higher octane unleaded...

Hi guys need some help as I think I am going mad...

So I have been using super/premium unleaded in the zed and last time I filled up I was sure it said 98 octane but today in esso theirs was 97, so I went on a little drive and all the supermarkets and bp was selling 97.

Have I imagined this 98 fuel? Who bloody sells it? Wait something is telling me you can buy 99 am I off my head?

To be honest I put diesel in my everyday car so use to paying 1.50/litre so the few extra pence doesn't bother me but I serious thought I have imaged it... Am half crazy anyway, I think nismo badges are cool, need I say any,ore ;)

Thanks for the posts :)

I always thought the MON rating was more important than the RON rating. However, they never really tell us what the quality of their fuels are - but since they are all ISO / BS standards I guess that they have to sell them at that quality.

Is it cost effective? And does it make much of a difference? I know on FI cars with a remap octane boosters have shown to make a marked improvement, but on an untuned unmapped car does it make a tangible difference?

Using high octain improves MPG as well as small margins of performance unless FI in some cases.. Its a cleaner fuel as well so helps maintain the engine.. I use high octain as normal fuel for all my cars unless I'm driving diesel or not so sporty car..

^^ Thats American numbers which by default are lower than ours. I think they're 91 is similar to our super (about 98) so the 100 mentioned in that link would be like 110 octane, which is why there was such a difference in the plane.

As for using super, it's not all about an extra pony or two or extra MPG, it's about detonation of the fuel in the chamber at X temperature. Different levels of fuel detonate at different temperatures, our cars from the factory are mapped to detonate at whatever temperature 98 RON does, and therefore running lower levels (and possibly significantly higher) causes the air/fuel mixture to ignite at the wrong point in the revolution and can destroy the engine.

Thats how I read the situation anyway...
