Aliensurfer Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 The Royal family are nothing more than tourist attractions for the Americans. Tourist attraction... Yes. They bring in millions of pounds of tourism helping keep the UK afloat. But more importantly, they're a major part of English/British history. The official reported annual cost to the British public of keeping the Royal Family was £41.5 million for the 2008-09 financial year. However, this figure is disputed since it does not include the cost of security provided by the police and the Army, the lost revenues of the Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster and other expenses. Total waste of money and a completely outdated tradition Quote
Stutopia Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I don't buy into the 'they bring in loads of tourists' idea. The French did the decent thing years ago, people still go and visit France and see the old buildings. Aside from seeing if the flag is flying you don't even know if anyone is in, except the army of servants obviously. The argument makes it sound like when an American tourist comes over to visit they all actually get to meet them, then have tea of an evening at BP or WC. Of all of them though, these two seem about the best of the bunch, so good luck to them and the nipper. With the Royals being so in touch with the people these days, do you think they'll go with a normal person style name? Dave, Ben, Kevin, Levi, Jenny, Lindsay, Joan, Mohammed, SuperDry. Maybe simply JR, like the TV show! Perhaps not... Quote

Total waste of money and a completely outdated tradition Moan moan moan moan... What about the money they bring in? The Royal family generate close to £500 million every year for British tourism with The Tower of London, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace the most popular Royal destinations. But that just takes into account what people can track. Like visiting these places. Tourists still visit the UK but don't necessarily visit the palaces. in 2009 Uk tourism was worth £115bn per year. 9billion was just from London. Anyways this thread wasn't about the royal family and their worth to society but the about the birth of a baby. A joyeous occasion, and a child who will have a huge impact on this country whether you like it or not. 1 Quote

gareth29 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 And they're German - someone on here will know their original name they had to drop in favour of Windsor when war broke out. Convert the palaces to luxury hotels, then her madge and all the hangers on can charge wealthy US visitors for personal audiences over breakfast/dinner etc and make them pay their way (pay their taxes). They are? Duke of Edinburgh is Greek. When he came to the UK he changed his name to Mountbattern. He started chatting up (these days i guess its called grooming) the Queen when she was 13, then got her Dads permission to marry her. When they got married, he got upset when the Queen wouldnt change her name from Windsor to Mountbattern when they married. Just had a quick peruse of your pie reviews - made me smile, esp the calorie count (who's counting?). Will have to try a pukka - just thought they were rubbish that fish shops sold. If you're ever in skipton, drake and macefield do award winning meat and potatoe pies and pork pies! Quote
