Fisherking Posted April 1, 2013 Share Posted April 1, 2013 Hi So had my z for 2wks now and cleaned it for the 1st time this wknd. I am kicking myself a bit here as I didnt check the make of tyre it was wearing when i bought it. I just checked whether they were new (they still had their nobules on so was happy). I now discover they are all Autogrips a make i never heard of. I was shocked when i did an internet search and found not one ok thing about them, all i am hearing is that they are deathtraps in the wet. tbh i have found the z twitchy in the wet and found it fun catching a bit of oversteer but am worried if they are that bad i may be on borrowed time if they suddenly let go when i least expect. I can't really afford to change them all at once. Do you think its ok just changing back ones for Sport Contacts or other high perf ones and do tge fronts next. Or should i change all at the same time next month? Also i am slightly confused as i have a facelift 2006 Z in GT spec. It has Rays alloys but from what I have read in some places tyres on the GT were bigger and should be 19's rather than 18's.Is this right and so is my tyre size wrong as well or was this an option or something? Arran Posted April 1, 2013 Share Posted April 1, 2013 The rays are 18" with 225/45/18 and 245/45/18. Autogrip tyres are real budget jobbies, if you can't afford to spend big bucks on tyres then my suggestion would be to save up a couple months for some Falken FK452 or 453 and change all 4 at once then sell the others to recoup a little of the cost. About the tyres, My wheels came with some no name budget tyres and after reading some of the tyre comments on here I was absolutely petrified of them when I first went out, especially as it was raining. I crept along at about 40 for 3 miles, didn't dare touch the throttle in case I went spinning out. Well, here I am some 2 years later with the same tyres and I haven't found a single ditch or even had a slide but then again I'm a very careful driver and with my limited ability wouldn't notice any difference even if I had £600 tyres per corner. Pnthrblkzs Posted April 1, 2013 Share Posted April 1, 2013 I did the same thing when I bought mine, never owned a "sports car" before and although I've always bought decent tyres on previous cars I didn't even think to check the brand just the fact they were brand new just like you. My Z has the misfortune of having autogrips fitted all round too, I bought my Z in October and have lasted the winter in them, tbh they'll have to do me a few more months as I'm tidying up the car. I did some research a few months ago and found a mid->decent tyre for the preferred tyres owners fit on their Z's come in at £150-£200 the autogrips are £55 each!!!! They are shocking in the wet but just drive sensibly matched to the conditions and you'll be fine, I've fortunately had no scares even in the ice etc this winter but the car was new too me so i was cautious anyway. I think i will stick with them for another month or so and then change them for MSS all round. azcry Posted April 2, 2013 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I had those ditchfinders on my Z when i bought it too in Jan , i didnt check what the dealer was putting on as part of the deal when buying , got carried away with the thought of owning a Z,, but as i bought it from a sports car specialist i didnt even think they would have put such crap on. I didnt notice it for the first 10 days or so as i was cautious and finding out about the car, then my first twitch on a roundabout in the wet, less than 20mph with reverse camber and it stepped out , just got more nervy after that, and the fact that the traction kept kicking in under mildest of pull aways and the fronts constantly activating the abs, under moderate braking , i lasted 3 weeks before getting hold of new wheels with falkens on even with around 4mm tread it totally changed the handling and confidence in the car , really started to enjoy it and the twitchy bits went away, even to the extent that sometimes i push it on purpose when having a blast, its so predictable before it starts to lt go and a bit of lift off and it comes right back into line, when it does. Used them before - lethal on the road, but ideal for amateur drifting! If anybody has any new or used ones ill be interested to take them off you. stuarty Posted April 10, 2013 Share Posted April 10, 2013 (edited) I bought my wife and son a mini cooper last year. I went to skidz to buy a set of 17inch JCW alloys. They fitted autogrip tyres to the new wheels and TBH they have been fine. As my son is a new driver and kirbed the alloys to death anyway i'm glad i didnt shell out for expensive tyres. But thats a 100ish BHP mini and not a 300ish BHP rear wheel drive, so i would say you get what you pay for! Also, i hope no one waste's there time lecturing me on tyre safety, as the tyres are fine for the type of driving my wife and son do!
