My 350z hates being serviced. HELP!!

Hello everyone. I have a 58 plate 350z which has just covered 16k miles. I had a main nissan dealer service it at 9k miles, i can't remember what was included in that service, but definitelty new oil and filter etc.. Anyway, after this service my car just jumped coninueously while travelling at low-ish speeds in built up areas. For example doing 30mph in 4th gear would feel like someone was bumping you from behind, also pulling away from junctions in 2nd gear if you had'nt fully stopped. My car was fine before this. I took it back to the garage and they did'nt have a clue and fitted a new clutch plate and other bits under warranty. Abit excessive as it had only done 9k miles. It didnt really cure it. After a while it started to calm down and stopped doing it. I have just had an oil and oil filter change again and its started all over again. Its very very frustrating and just takes all enjoyment out of driving the car. So if anyone has any ideas or has had a similiar problem that could help me, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Michael

its very difficult to diagnose a car problem over the internet, but it sounds like its running rough, almost like its missfiring. although i can;t see that being the issue. or it could be a dodgy throttle body. if the butterfly valve is moved on the zed it can throw a hissy fit. might give you the rough running. you can perform a TB reset. that or they might have unplugged something or not put something back properly. i;d check the connector to the maf see if thats damaged. other optiion could be a dodgy spark, if they changed and put the wrong plugs in.

what fuela re you runinng it on? it should be 98ron fuel

what oil did they use? it should be fully synthetic 5w30

Please tell us the dealer you use is a Nissan High Performance Centre and not just a standard franchised dealership?!!!! If its not an HPC they won't have a scooby what they're doing

A tad over the top, it's only a bloomin' Nissan. Any idiot can service a car, not sure where all this stuff about cars having to go to specialists has come from in the last few years. Not that that's what you're saying Vik, just a rant in general. :)

We need much more detail here. What service was done? What 'other bits' were changed last time? What did they give as the reason for a clutch change after a service?

Hi Michael. It's very difficult to advice over the internet in this case, but it sounds like you have some wiring fault or similar and when they do a service and touching the car underneath they move something (like wiring loom) and that's where the problem get worst or repair itself. You need somebody with good diagnostic experience to find what causing the symptoms and repair it. Where are you from. If you near to us you more than welcome to bring it to me as I love challenges not just servicing all the time ;)

Only the 370z and GTR need to be done a Nissan's high performance centres.

No really you don't say?!

What I was getting at was fact that your average nissan tech does not have the knowledge base - as evidenced by the numerous horror stories we have on here from members who have experienced everything from wrong oil to mis-diagnosed faults to zeds being put on rolling roads for their brake testing during MOTs

Hopefully our traders such as Kaizer above can help the OP once they have a bit more info on what the service actually included

Get your dealer to try an EVT (Exhaust Valve Timing) Relearn - different/well used oils have an effect on the way the EVT control actuators respond to the cam phase adjustment signals sent from the ECU. This problem can be worse when the oil is not really warm, but the coolant is warm enough for the ECU to start the EVT Control function, e.g. a couple of minutes after a warm start or 5-10 minutes after a cold start.

Thank you all for replying. I wish I was more mechnanically minded so I could help you guys more. Being a main dealer who sell 350s and 370s I assumed they would put the right oil in. I did at the same time have a battery problem which could have been a problem. This was 2 years ago now. This recent service was done two weeks ago by an independent garage who works on performance cars he's very clued up and researches everything online too. It just seems consistent with oil changes. I must admit I don't always put performance fuel in but this problem seems to just appear after services. It's still done low miles 16k. I live in the Suffolk area, but I'm willing to travel alittle way if anyone's able to help or could recommend somewhere to take it which isn't £100 an hour. Cheers guys.

Having serviced my HR 350Z myself i dont see how just changing oil & oil filter could cause any problems like you describe. The oil filter is easy to get to once you have removed the undertray - its the same oil filter as fitted to most Nissans, incl the Nissan Micra! The oil goes in the top of the engine, nice & easy. Theres no wires or anything you have to remove, so even a YTS trainee should not have any problems.

I wonder what else they changed in the service. It could be anything really - blocked air filter, ignition problems, fuel starvation.... a sensor, but id say its more likely to be some problem the car has always had, rather than relating to a service.

Lets hope the dealer can trace it down. Seems mad that they changed the clutch on it!!!

Trust me, its the EVT Control...

Just don't ask how I know...

Ooooo, tell, tell, you must, you must!! :):snack:

Over £7k worth of unneccesary parts fitted under warranty over a 2-year period, before finally getting an ECU patch loaded by my local HPC which cured it!

Its quite a well known issue in the US, where there is an official Nissan patch for the ECU.

Thank you all very much for taking the time to reply to my post. I have gained some very useful information and i think i know what the problem is. So im going to take it back to the garage where it was serviced and explain the possible problem to him. Hopefully he will be able to solve it. If not i will take it where you guys have reccomended. But im pretty sure it is the EVT control. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Thank you all once again.
