Paycos New Project and Build Thread

Refitting the rear lights was a bigger challenge than I first thought. I knew I had to make all new internal rubber gaskets but the twelve threaded bolts on each light were so bad I couldn’t re thread them. Out came, the angle grinder, 24 new bolts were made from M5 threaded rod, the old ones were removed after a lot of swearing and the new ones fitted with a dab of thread lock for good measure.

Everything is back in and looking good. Just need the bumpers back now.

One of the advantages of still working from home is that during your lunch hour you can knock a couple of small car restoration bits out Todays lunch hour was spent polishing my relay on my polishing wheel. She has gone from tainted 1971 relay to a shiny chrome one in 30 mins. Rocker cover is next at the weekend.

Well, it’s not perfect but I guess it is 50 years old and it should show some age. It’s finished and going back on tomorrow. Before and after photos of the rocker cover after it had a lesson on my bench polisher.

I was pre warned the latest job may look a small one but is a pig to do. In my defiant mood I took it on. Removed the front cowl, took out the wiper motor which involved

disconnecting all the linkage. Thank goodness for mobile phone cameras to take photos of what goes where for the refit. 50 years of being in situ for the parts was a challenge to remove and refit, Anyway after a good polish on the wheel, paint and a few new bolts she went back together this evening.

Before and after photos below.

Ok, so little update on the project. Just refitted the re chromed bumpers and have had a rethink on the finished look I want on the car. Decided to keep the rear bumper but remove the front, mesh the openings a run with a front chin. Photo of the rear bumper back on and the planned new front look. All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Rainy day today so not much I could outside in some spare time. I am also in limbo waiting for some parts to arrive from the USA. Despite this there are always jobs to do when restoring an old car. Some are easier than others for sure. Today I took out the hardboard foot well side boards as they were scruffy. Cut out new ones from hardboard and carpeted them.

Before and after photo. Sorry its not very exciting. The good stuff is around the corner..

looks like japanese magazine cover i have.
yes the magazine has a cover sheet!

are they su's being replaced by webers?

was there a radiator cap change, themostat change or something to go with with ditching the overflow?
I did similar on my 70's car and now that it dumps it on the ground rather than sucking it back in so i'm thinking what are the options.
doesn't really matter as i spend more time under the bonnet than road time so i'm ok with it if just have to live with it and refil.

I also tidied my washer motor and carby using vinegar to clean it. it did a good job but corrosion comes back. what's the after cleaning secret there to keeping it shiny?

footwell side boards fix details isn't boring.   : )  I replaced mine with american oak ply veneer.
