Electric Vehicles are coming

A quick Google shows there are no end of options near me. In fact, even the RAC now offer EV servicing, along with a plethora of other places it seems, as a mobile option so they would even come to me.

I appreciate you won't be able to take it to just any garage, but choices don't seem to be particularly limited. Costs do seem to vary a bit though so seems worthwhile to shop around.

Dealer's can't (legally) withhold software updates, and it makes absolutely no sense for manufacturers to allow it either.

Other than brakes and a cabin pollen filter, and ignoring the underbody walk around video to rack up charges, what else is there to regularly service?

Having EV service intervals similar to ICE seems a rip off

Its still needs inspections, oiling moving parts, making sure wheel hub, brakes, steering motors/racks are safe. All that takes time to check. The myth going around is its maintenance free. Its still mechanical and requires servicing.

@illogikal Witholding of software updates fair enough, sure but you can have them at a cost? Swipe here please!

I hear from son no.1 that BYD will shortlly bring out a car that will charge in 5 minuets.    Sounds impossible to me but remember where you heard it first.

BYD will do one that’s 20 mins to charge with 650 mile range soon (apparently). I’m tempted to ask my fleet manager if he wants me to test one as my 338 mile ID4 does about 260 in the real world.

That's still impressive.

A British company has already tested this. The battery and architecture are all from China. Just about making it into a model that's somewhat affordable. It will probably appear in a BYD Sport Saloon and SUV first before any coupe or roadster. BYD make batteries themselves while MG use CATL. Who are more focused on the first Solid State batteries for more range and quick charge times.

Land en Masse. China is a large country leading on multiple fronts and industries. These guys are pushing ahead while people are throwing hurty words around on social media.

BYD features might be gimmicky but some of these gimmicks were only for Hollywood at one point. Floating SUV that can stay on water for 20 minutes or 360 degree tank turns and side shimmies. Hopping over speed humps and potholes. USA imposes tarriffs but still use them for their inner city buses. The batteries are made in house and sales are pretty much decent eclipsing Tesla.

Wait till they reach 6 million cars per year produced. Theyll be in the top 7 manufacturers replacing Nissan and Co. Be interesting to see if they enter the affordable sports GT space along with MG and Porsche. Polestar are also making a convertible but it will be higher priced I think.

I think Xiaomis first attempt and 300,000 car sales in 2024 of the SU7 car is impressive despite flaws reported on Chinawatch youtube. Ford CEO drives one. The Nordschleife run with the Ultra was not bad either.

BYDs EV Supercar also did a run last year.

Looks nice.... except it will have a heavy battery, weight 2+ tonnes, be built from tacky plastic and monkey metal, and corner like an oil tanker

Doubt it the quality of cars coming out of China has increased ten-fold. The Teslas coming from China dont suffer the same panel gaps as the ones from US. It will weigh the same as an SL Mercedes based on the size. Looks like a large car.

Battery tech has moved along now. The model 3 weighs 1800kg and that's old generation batteries.

This is going to weigh 1000kg apparently and made in UK

Lets see.  I drove a Cybster a while back, looks nice, handles like a 3 legged donkey.

Seen lots of track videos from China and US when it was tested there. Not too many complaints. It does suffer from understeer due to weight. But so would an SL AMG or F Type Convertible. Both weigh over 1700kg...the latest iteration of AMG GT is around 2100kg.... Cybersters been praised by many media agencies. Its a GT not a sports car or an MX5 as people have compared it to. It is what it is. Still waiting for the competition to show up something better.

The Cyberster was tuned amd partly developed by a former Ferrari Engineer (Marco Fainello) I suppose they did what they could with the 1885 and 1985kg weights it carries due to the batteries.

Advantage being a stiffer chassis and better weight distribution (Skateboard setup). Whereas Porsche are going for a box battery behind the driver where the engine used to be. Lets see what the competition drums up if theres any within the next 2 years. Porsche Boxster EV may be delayed as the battery suppliers gone bust.

Tough market lol...Couldn't be me.

£60,000 the profit margin is 5-8k per car depending on discount....for a car that does 3.4 seconds to 60. Beats the preface lift F type on quarter mile (11.4). Beats many supercars, keeps up with 812 Superfast for 400 meters as seen on youtube is not a bad price. Yeah you could pick up any of the others. But it takes some bravery to bring a car like this to the market when no one has bothered. The only thing that can compare the MX5 is its a roadster. Aside from that theyre not comparable as the target different markets. Theres a reason people choose SL AMG, Z4, F Type Roadster as opposed to the MX5. Theyre looking for a GT experience not a small sports car experience. Also the cars two times the size of an MX5 and quite wide.

A case of each to their own with the Cyberster. Its sold over 3000 just hasn't sold many in China just above 1000 cars for various reasons including practicality. Thats why theyll bring the 4 seater coupe to market at the end of the year. At least they tried on a section of the market thats 28%. It was always a tough sell. In China there are other cars that sell more than MG. MG sales are mostly international markets

Running costs are low on certain pre 25 plates. £190 tax £999 insurance. 4 pound a charge with a home charger cheaper with Solar. UK is probably the only market that didnt offer lifetime warranty. Thailand, China did Australia offered 10 years warranty possibly due to expected low sales. Also Thailand is a third party running the show there. Car cost 60k there too and it still sold more than UK.

Its got people talking which was the aim of the designer. They needed a Halo car and it will probably be end of life within a few years.
