  1. the difficulty for schools is theyh are under heavy scrutiny, if results dip or are below expected they have to explain why, one of the other thing schools are judged on is attendance. if attendance is low and so are results there tends to be a coralation. because of this some schools are very fearful of letting absences happen so take a zero tolerance stance on it.
  2. santagato's channel is pretty funny in general
  3. the advantage of a set rule is that it keeps things simple, think of it like the 70mph speed limit. the majority of people stick within the rules, every so often some of us step out side these, but we tend not to be stupid about it. but those that are idiots get caught and prosecuted. and to be fair the police tend to police it loosly so if your doing 76 they'll leave you alone. no different to the school holiday rule, most stick within, some play close to the boundaries and some take the pee. now remove the limits completely, people will do 100+ everywhere all of the time you may not like the framework but it gives the schools structure to work round. most sensible schools are fairly practical working round it. but like the police you do get the odd power nut who enforces the rules like it was the 10 commandments hand to them direct from god. with regards to striking teachers I personal don't agree with striking, but when this kind of action is taken and it is rare its usally to protect or defend the quality of education your child is getting. you may not like it, but if you saw the changes happening in education at the moment you'd be worried. sadly its only set to get worse
  4. taking the S out didn't work for me
  5. Most run an inbuilt unit. The one I'm looking at also supports raspberry pi to run octoprint, where you can control from a different building and watch your build on camera to check it and alter it if away from the machine
  6. Ok just seen you found the 5th one
  7. If you think that's funny watch them do mad lib madness A game for lads night me thinks
  8. Draw in any software that outputs in STL I have autodesk inventor 2016 pro, but I believe googles sketchup will do the same for free. use a slicer program like cura which is just one of the many free open source software that will allow you to out put to the printer. the slicer software breaks the drawing down into its layers, allows you to hollow it, add scaffolding structure and play around with sizing, speed and output etc. there are some smart kits going for as little as £100 but they require a lot of fettling to tweek them to a good finish.
  9. Looks really good, nice build Have experience with the old laser cut cheaper kits about 5 years ago my last department built and ran one, they recently upgraded to a replicator 5 Think I am most likely to go with the Big box from ED3 its like an upgraded ultimaker has the dual print head and full hackability. and with a bed build size of 250x280x300mm its one of the largest build areas ive seen. i'm very much out of practice so I will have to go back to basics again, but building from scratch should allow me to relearn quickly. I'm down in Suffolk currently running Engineering, RM and A Level Product Design in a small town school not far from the heritage coast
  10. EWO are notified at below 95% at 90% contact is made with home, when it starts to push 85% parents risk fines, beyond that the EWO can become a permanent fixture in dealings with home and if improvements are made it can lead to court cases and jail time. With reference to taking the time off and who's decision it is; as a teacher I have no issue if you want to take your kids out; your kids, your choice. good kids will always catch up and put the extra effort in if its needed to fill in the gaps. weaker students will always suffer. if kids are in yr 7 or 8 its unlikely to have a massive impact, if its around an exam time its a bad parental choice and that can start yr 9 up, primary i'm less sure of its not my area. my honest advice, if you can leave them in school during term time they get the maximum benefit from the education. its the same principle with good and bad schools a good kid will always do well regardless of if they are in a good or a bad school, where good schools come into there own is when the child is either weak or has issues. in an good school they usually get dragged along in the positive performance in a bad school they can often gravitate to trouble or being lazy. good schools tend to also offer more opportunities. when it comes to my own children I won't be taking them out of school during term time, not because I agree, but because I can't
  11. Lots of occupations dont get to choose , the military for example FWIW 90% attendance is 19 days absent from school in one year ! , my son had 2 days off this year , one for sick and one for a funeral the military can apply for leave same as most other professions, their leave can be denied and at times they gain down time if they like it or not. there are times when on tour/serving on a ship, where leave isn't possible. I struggle to think of another profession who are tied to non term time only holidays. the time which is most expensive. I get penalised for being a teacher as I will always have to travel at peak cost times. I don't get to book my holidays to allow me to take advantage of the cheaper flights
  12. We have a system that students have to get a signature from each of their class teachers, if they are up to date with their work etc they sign it if they aren't they don't. if they haven't got full signatures they have time to catch up with the work to get the teacher to sign it. if they don't get it up to date it then comes down to the heads discretion. other elements play part of this basically if you already have poor attendance you won't get the sheet for signing in the first place. As long as a students attendance remains above 98% then they are deemed as regular attenders if it drops below 95% the EWO is brought in. As a teacher it does mean i am the only person occupational who cannot choose when i take my holiday, i am legally bound to only holiday in non term time. (the most expensive time) if i want time off outside that it is nigh on impossible.
  13. Even if we aren't integrated into the U.S.E, every one else in the club all join up how much say will we actually have; we'll be little the little kid on the outside of a group huddle trying to poke in. they'll listen even less. I feel a vote to stay is like giving Europe a mandate to say "well you wanted to stay you voted for it, the rules are changing now you'll be sucked in even more. I know you say there is no evidence of it and Cameron has got us guarantee's etc. but just looking at history and past experience. what we signed up for in the 70's is a very different Europe to the one we know partake in. why will it be any different, that we agree to stay on conditions, but we end up getting sucked in deeper if we like it or not. There are no legally binding contracts that can't be changed regarding our position in Europe, there are no gaurentee's on anything cameron has "secured" its like the same crap they gave to maggie to sell to the british public to make them feel like they got something. its not a negotiation. Europe has no interest in how we feel, they'll continue on with their plans regardless with us hanging on to the coat tales. If we wanted a proper say in how Europe is to be run we should have been in properly from the start, and if we wanted a proper say now the only way we'd get a proper seat at the table with a working mic is if we dived in feet first and embraced everything fully. This "we're in but only on certain conditions" is a weak position if we're to be taken seriously i think we're either in properly or out properly. How many of us have a mate who wants to be part of group things but always has conditions or issues "oh i can come out friday night, but i can't make it till 11 and then i can only drink if you buy my beer for me" "oh i can play football on sunday but you'll have to lend me your kit and i won;t play in goal and i'll be late to the game" etc etc etc how many of us take bog all notice of that person and carry on regardless but make allowances for him because your mum and his mum are best friends blah blah blah. We're going to be that person...i don't want to be that person
  14. Sadly haven't been able to afford to go abroad for the last 3 years, this year is our first holiday in ages to....dorset A lot of the british food is b becoming very good, even rivalling the europeans have bought 2 british cars in the last 15 years, would buy another jag happily in the future.
  15. is the pound losing strength a bad thing? won't it make our exports more appealing as they'll be cheaper to sell. yes our import costs will go up, but is that not a good excuse to buy british where possible? the French do it as do the germans.
  16. Glad its going well, after having twins my outlook on life has been changed forever. wouldn't change it for the world; scared the crap out of me before they came, but you settle into the role surprisingly quickly and easily.
  17. BM and Husky had similar setups both were lowered 30mm neither had issues really. both had wheels that nicely filled the arches looked flush from the side and wide at the back. the bronze colour is noce and it makes a change from the varying range of silvers. I had a Black S2000 and wanted copper/bronze/ gold alloys (never got round to repainting the ones i had.) the blue and bronze is very complimentary, but its a personal choice, it has to be what you like.
  18. Blue and bronze work suprisingly well together
  19. Am interested to see if anyone else on here is a 3D printer user, I am a Technology Teacher and looking to bring my department into the 21st century. I have experience with older kit from previous schools but the market has changed dramatically. I have it narrowed down to the following choices 1. ED3 Big Box Dual Extruder 2. Ultimaker original + (possibly ultamaker 2) Contraints are the budget, I've managed to raise about £600 so far possibly £800 but around the £1000 mark is target. build size is important no point in spending money but only have a tiny build space. was looking to see if anyone had any experience with the above, the reason I've looked at the hackable versions is that I can laser cut and modify or update as the technology advances but use a good base to work on. Only came across the Big box today but been really impressed its currently my first choice and i'm going to get the 6th formers to help build it.
  20. Immigration isn't the deciding factor for me for leaving; i don't disagree that the situation is bad, but hwo do you come to a solution when every country effected in the Euro block have all turned into NIMBY's (Not In My Back Yard) where they agree a resolution is needed but aren't willing to take any on. and its all someone elses problem. look at all the fences going up does that look like a group of people who want refugees and migrants to come in?
  21. I'm not disagreeing with either of you on those points, but there is a large section of the electorate that "if" they vote will vote on gut instinct and who sells the best story. and it is those that may go down the 2 fingers route. Its not how i'm voting, I've made my choice on my long term feeling over Europe and the direction that its going, rightly or Wrongly its the route i think is right. I'm still listening to both sides and it may well be when push comes to shove and i'm stood infront of the voting slip i change my mind. but nothing said at the moment has helped sway it. the cameron argument of all out war i found insulting to my intelligence. You only have to look at Europe at the moment and we're heading that way even if we stay. All those countries in the shengan zone who have suddenly erected fences, enforced guards and stopped free movement to avoid being the next dumping ground of migrants. that kind of behaviour can only escalate with neighbours possibly falling out if the base issue isn't resolved.
  22. so they built it in 1930 with UPVC? the windows are a later addition and will be held in with not a lot. criminals usually remove all the plastic cappings to get to the side and then crow bar it out. you have access from the inside and outside where you can just remove the screws sensible with a screw driver.
  23. The units come out moderately easy, i'm not 100% sure on the fixings but having watched them being installed on our new development there is suprisingly little holding them in.
