If you stamped hard on the brakes then you will have transferred weight to the front end which in effect will have lessened rear wheel traction, ...this will have been exacerbated further if you were turning at the same time, going over a rise in the road or if your tyres are worn/wrong pressures/mismatched etc. Lessen learnt I'm sure and new pants on order I take it.

Same here. It would be cheaper for me to pay a private company to fill in all the potholes rather than buy enough paint to draw co*ks around them all.

What you are talking about is a "pre-cleaner". As Dan (Ekona) mentioned these are designed to be used in very dusty conditions to extend the life of the filer or cleaning them. They do as well reduce airflow through the filter but if you're driving in the desert that's the least of your worries & they are a good idea then. Just stick the K&N filter on, let it do it's job & then clean or replace yearly.
