Hi guys,

My girlfriend is due in November with our first child :D

This now means I have to find a suitable family car.

I want a car that has 4/5 doors, but can also do a sub 9m nurburgring lap time.

Been looking at scoobys for the past few weeks. - bug/blob wrx up to around the £5k mark

Then will spend a fair amount on suspension setup/brakes/tyres.

Not looking for front wheel drive.

Is there realistically anything else that fits the bill?

Audi S4 the older one with the twin turbo 2.7 litre engine, not the later V8. Scooby setup, but a decent interior

They just look too old for me unfortunately. Awesome cars though!

That's FWD ;)

Save a bit and buy an STi, rather than a WRX and then chuck money at it. The STi is a much better base to start with.

E36 M3 Saloon... Probably have a 100k on it and a crap interior though.

I agree but if it's a good one you will find difficulty in beating this car for build/bhp/£....

I though of that, but I still have a lot of development in myself to make first before I start getting into silly power/start playing with a wrx.

Was only 12seconds slower than 'daveyboy11' 350z round ring this year in my st170...

For the Ring - a BMW Diesel 330 - 4 doors / torque / rear wheel drive. Should get a decent one for 5K. Prob need to do brake for Ring though....

Not surprised, it's much easier to drive FWD quickly because it'll understeer first.

Once all those sleepless nights, constant feeding and nappy changing kicks in along with the love for your child you wont worry about times around the ring. ;)

Its a fair point - although did you mean you wanted a quick car and used the ring time as a benchmark - or you intending to do it? You will owe back some serious brownie points if you do, you wont be allowed out for months!

We have a two year old, never had a need for an estate car - not sure what you would need it for? Kid goes in the back, you still have a spare seat and room in the back, buggy and cases in the boot. Job done. We have a Ford Focus for the family weekends away etc, never had a problem fitting stuff in.

When the babies comes are you sure your going to have time or the money to worry about suspension and 'ring time .....I'm at an age where most of my mates from uni/college how all have kids (some two!!), and from what I can gather once it arrives you can pretty much write-off the next 18 years of your life interms of socialising/having money for holidays/going out for meals.....ofcourse if you ask anyone with a baby, having one is 'the most amazing thing in world', though some of my more honest mates have told me different

Ignore gangzoom mate  our two year old is demanding, but amazing, it doesnt stop your life, just means you have to be more organised and more willing to go the extra yard to make things happen. Just this weekend gone my wife and I went to Oslo for three days for a city break, the inlaws stayed at our house during that time looking after Alfie.

I rarely miss a Zed meet in my area - I even took Alfie along to one when he was a baby and just learning to walk!

Just need to learn to give each other space to do your own thing, be organised about it and get a calendar on the wall so its staring you right in the face each day and you get the best of both worlds - a baby that is amazing but also still get to do things you did before. A side effect we found was that you tend to drop the things that you thought were important but actually you dont miss when they are gone. Think of it as 'Lifestyle Streamlining'

I like that concept....will be joining the nappy changing/sleep deprived/constantly broke club soon....Got to drive around Europe, do a trip to the Andes, maybe even do a trip back to Newzeland, generally blow all our disposable income before we have to 'streamline' and save up for stuff to clean poo/vomit up with
