Hi Folks my 2005 Import has just started "squeeling" for about a second from cold start up only. Am I right in guessing its a belt? If so which is the usual suspect? 55K miles only

Cheers

A/c belt or alternator belt ~ can happen at this time of year because of the cold. Mine has done it once or twice in the last few weeks.

Inspect the belts to see if they are worn/cracked/perished at all and worth checking to see if they are tight enough (as this could cause the squeal).

If you do need new belts you can PM a trader on here for a good deal (ZMANALEX/Clarkmotorsport/Horsham etc).

Yeah, it'll be one (or both) of the auxhillary belts. Mine squeals like a little piggy at times when it's really cold :cold:

Mine have squeeked a couple of times on a cold mornings recently, replaced last year so I'm hoping they just need a slight adjustment if anything.

when its squealing have a glance at the battery gauge, if it drops its the alternator belt, if it doesn't its the A/C belt

Hmm I'll try to remember that in case I ever have a problem

Just stick a blob of Vaseline on the inside of the belt then start it up, all squeaks will stop.

Promise.

Dont do this ^^^ The belt will have no friction on the pulley to turn it !!!!! :scare:

I'm not a chemist, but isn't Vaseline petroleum based, the enemy of rubber? I'm sure I read somewhere you should use water based lube instead because of this. Maybe that was a different website....

I've been advised before that a quick squirt of WD40 would also stop it squealing. I did decline to try this method as I applied the same school of thought as Neil.

KY Gel works well on it as its water based...!!!

Why do you even have that Will ?

Forget that I don't want to know !

Mine are squealing on startup, and even mid-drive with the demister blasting.

The belts are both new less than 6 months ago (squealed from the outset), and I've since retensioned the belt myself (didn't work), then got it looked at by a mechanic who said the tensioning was fine. Ironically, they didn't squeal at all prior to replacing them, but they were looking a little cracked, so I did.

Anything else to check? Would a new heavier duty battery help? As there are no other indications that the battery is on its way out, I'm loath to go that route just yet.

Tensioner pulley bearings, alternator pulley bearings, make sure the alternator/ bracket is tight ( if it's moving even slightly it will alter the belt tension)
