Insurance Aaarrgghhhh!!

Hi all,

Have had my imported Zed covered with Bell Insurance for over 18 months now with no problems.

Just been on the phone to them for a renewal price and it has gone up by £800 from the renewal I was given last week!!!!

Queried this and they said that they didn't know in the first place that it was an import and I should of stated that it was an import to the advisor.

My argument was, I gave the registration number to the advisor and if he didn't specifically ask me whether if it was an import then I can only assume he knew.

They are now listening to the original phone call but I don't think I personally stated it was an import. If they asked then yeah I would of said.

Where do I stand on this?

Can't afford £1500 insurance and cheapest elsewhere was £2200!!! Any other good insurers for imports?

Thanks

The insurance premium is based on the facts relevant to the vehicle, if you omitted to tell them all the facts then it is only right that the original quote is invalid. May not be the news you want to hear but its right.

On a positive note be thankful they found out now and not during the year if you had an accident and they declared your insuance invalid then, could be a lot worse.

Regarding cheaper insurance i would contact some of the specialist insurance traders on here. Sky have been great for me.

+1 Everything Will said.

Sky insured my Zed this year when no one else would touch it because of the number if mods. Then, when I recently bought a 2nd car they were able to apply some of my NCB to the premium, which no other broker would do.

The question usually asked on forms is if it is a grey import? Is a grey import something specific or just a normal import?

It would be interesting if they come back saying the question wasn't asked but your insurance still wasn't valid, then ask them to refund the money you paid them to insure the car which wasn't insured after all :D

Surely they can see if it's an import from the reg? No?

I like your thinking $$$

That was my argument about it showing up with the reg number and she said that not all imports show up as an import. That to me is an obvious reason for them to ask the question and not rely on the customer or by just assuming.

I wasn't asked the question so they shouldn't assume the answer.

I was asked about mods which I declared.

Awaiting phone call for round 2!!!

The fact you knew it was an import and that it would affect the premium, but chose not to disclose this looks about as clear cut as you can get, I'm afraid. Did you only declare the mods you think they want to know, or everything?

I dread to think how many (import and UK ) cars are incorrectly insured off the registration number.

The comparison site suggestions may work but bare in mind these sites are set up for standard UK car insurance.

If the admiral group is coming out on top then go through confused and put in the longest cover start date they will let you (30 days I think). This will give you the cheapest quote possible, once you come to pay for the insurance they ask you to choose a start date and you can change it here to the correct one and it won't effect the premium.

Admiral are no longer on comparison sites, according to my other half who did hers last month.

Just did a quote on confused (which is owned by admiral), they came up top with two of their subsidiaries just after.

24 with a modified V6 for £370, can't complain. Love the Admiral group!

If you do use a comparrison site and you select that it is an import, when continuing through to the brokers own site via the purchase option on the comparrison site, make sure that the import option is still selected and/or it is not stated in the assumptions of the broker that it is not an import.

When 'mapping' data input on a comparrison site into the broker's site, details such as these can be lost or disregarded.

Also the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act was amended in 2012.

It used to state that it was the duty of the policyholder not to make misrepresentations.

It now states that it is the duty for a consumer to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to the insurer.

I've been a honest guy and declared every modification on the car which is quite a lot. I assumed that they would know it was an import from the registration number. If it doesn't always show imports from registration number then the question should of been asked by the insurer.

They ask about modifications, convictions etc which affect premium so surely it's down to them to ask about imports like the websites do!
