MOT time opinions on my two options

Hey guys, simple question really.

1st option i use the motorsport garage that me my wife parents etc always used (family friend ;))

but he doesnt do MOT's he takes your car to get mot'd its a fantastic service as the wool wont be put over his eyes

obviously with the above no doubt he drops off then picks up at a later time when done

my problem with that is i maybe over thinking what if some mechanic etc thinks i know i havent driven a 350z il go rag this guys car

am i over thinking as my second option would be to find an mot station i book a time and wait while its done!

go on people tell me im paranoid.. ive never felt this protective over a 10 year old car, quite possibly due its a keeper and im about to give it a TLC service

so go on tell me option 1 is ok, my mechanic swaps keys with mot station and back again through the day, and i get the bill and a fresh mot at the days end!

Rob

ps on a side note anyone wanting this type of service the garage is in Redditch

My mate took his 370Z for its first P2 Service to a Nissan Garage and was told to pick it up at

5.00pm, he got a cab there and as it was in a one way street got dropped at the top and walked down

to the garage to be passed by a spotty "herbert" trying to drift his Zed on a roundabout, he was furious

with the garage but the Manager told him it was a road test after the service...

I would road test his ass with my boot if it was my car.

reset the trip computer and one of the odometers, then when you get it back you'll know how far it was driven and how it was driven going by the mpg read out?

its an idea i like that, i shouldnt be so paranoid but its hard not to!. The car came fitted with michelins pilots - and apparently them aint cheapi got my mot papers in hand looks like i got to the 7th Nov to get it booked in! what to do what to do, 1st option i been for years keeps costs down again and mot station aint going to fool a mechanic.. i guess i got a week or two to think this one through, yup its convenient .. so wheres this paranoia from...

oh yes when time to time certain garages get exposed for ragging customers cars around garage around town!!... i believe the F1 service garage got exposed awhile back!!

or am i giving too much cred that the 350z is asking to be cheekily took for a drive .. ]

over thinking this i am

I didnt want to cause any alarm, but it happens,

I take my cars to the same test station and they have a reception area with vending machines which overlooks the test area, they can drive it onto

the ramp and off, and that it. :teeth:

Except if you have an VLSD you should have the brake test done on the road, so you need to allow them some wiggle room.

Yeah, you could also measure the depth of tread on your rear tyres and when you get the car back ask to have the 'missing' 3mm put back on

All the cars I've had they tested the brakes on the rollers. :surrender:

I would do the first option. My 911 goes to a specialist who subs out the MOTs to another guy, but I trust the specialist implicitly so I never have any worries. It's just a car and it's nothing more complicated than an MOT.

I've had garages road test my cars before at speed without asking, but then they were a main dealer and the problem was speed-related so I think that was fair enough ;)

yes your being paranoid, and why not its your pride and joy, but unfortunately you have to get an mot by law so really don't have a choice at all!

stick with the 1st option as its someone you know and trust and pretty sure he wouldn't be too impressed if he saw someone ragging one of his customers cars either!

If u want piece of mind take it to an mot station yourself. The garage I get my fiesta done at have to take it to an mot station since they can't do it themselves. All I did was take the zed directly to the same station. Up to you obviously. Did laugh when I went to mention the brakes and the guy showed me the alert he got about not putting it on the rollers for the brake test. He didn't bother taking it for the test drive either to be fair lol

When you have an LSD I think they normally test the brake effectiveness by using a Tapley Meter.

Normally they recommend travelling on a Level Road at 20mph then applying the brakes fully. So no ragging during that bit then

I don't think you need to worry about it all.

Rob, if you're that worried, I can recommend a place in Worcester that has loked after and tested a few member's Zeds and where I'll be taking mine when it's next due.

But if your family friend thought the garage he used to conduct his MOT's were untrustworthy, or were going to 'rag' his customers cars, would he really still be using them?

I never let my zed out of my sight, so when it came to MOT time, i got some recommendations for a local garage who had experience in high performance RWD from people on here. I went there, and they specialised in Ferrari`s etc and had no problems MOT`ing my car and knew not to put it on the rollers due to the LSD etc. I watched them from the waiting room and as they drove down the road to test the brakes they drove it like they were granddads. I was very impressed with their professionalism and level of service so wouldnt hesitate to go back there again.

The only time I let my zed out of my sight at a garage was when I took it to Nissan for a belt to be changed under warrenty. I watched in horror as the 17 year old blonde female receptionist took my keys, got in my car and off it to the workshop. The workshop was behind the showroom and you could see though a glass screen. Without realising I was watching the receptionist handed the keys over to the "mechanic" who upon realising I had a K1 exhaust on my car promptly started rev`ing the living hell out of my car. That was until the parts manager saw me standing there watching. He promptly shat himself and after lots of hand waving got the mechanic to stop.

The brake test on mine was done in the small service area out side the MOT station, took about 2mins and in no way was it abused :)
