What's your thoughts on this car?

Ok, I've got a E92 320i m sport plus at present. It's just turned 1000 miles, but slightly under powered for me.

I would like another 2 seater and also a roadster this time but don't want to pay the fuel bill or tax for a 370z.

Anyway i like the BMW brand and I think the brand new Z4 sdrive 20i or Z4 sdrive 28i in m sport trim is pretty cool.

Don't be fooled by the badge number, both are 2.0l with twin turbo's. Also they are very economical and cheap to tax and hold good value.

Some photos.

They also do a new Z4 sdrive 35i which is out of my budget tbh.

Thanks for the replies folks. I was looking for a BMW e92 335i m sport plus through the BMW network, but there like hens teeth. Dealer phoned to ask if I would like a new Z4 instead.

Really liked the look of it and it drove really well. But I thought there was a slight wift of hairdresser ness from it. The roof is brilliant thought.

More car options?

By far better looking than the previous z4 and z3 but I test drove one and wasn't that impressed. There's only one brand you should consider when looking at models with a Z and it's not BMW

Keep the 320 for work and buy a cheaper 350 with some mods

£25K.

With the facelift model there are some excellent deals on 370Z's just now if you haggle a bit. I got my GT Edition for £27k new.

The Z4's alright, but it's not designed to be the same type of car as the 370Z, although technically in the same class. The 20i will be a disappointment, the 28i better.

For £35K there's a whole load of other cars I'd be looking at.

They don't seem to hold their value any better than anything else either, at £18K for a less than three years old 30i. I suspect you're going to buy one anyway because you like BMWs, like you did with the 320i, not because it's actually a decent car at a decent price. Well, they're good cars, but like the 320i they're not sporty cars.

Yip, can't argue with any of the above comments. Think I will be better keeping the 320i and buying a 350z as a second car. Then when the times right sell the 320i, as LRF4N suggested. If I could get a good trade in towards a 370z I would consider it also but don't think it's going to happen!

I hated the old Z4 but this is actually quite nice lookin, interiors good too...top quality materials but also STYLED NICELY (see other cough impreza cough threads ;))....but if you get one your still gonna look a bit.... essex hair stylist. Theres like 2 or 3 at my work...all the stereotypical women you would imagine drive them (and thats not meant in an offensive way ladies!) :)

Anyway i like the BMW brand

I think this is the biggest issue you have to work on :p ,...,,as much as I love my 335i, I didn't buy it because its a BMW, I bought it because it is a very good car that does everything I want (speed/rear seats/decent ecnomomy/blends in with the crowd). BMW do some great cars, 135i/335i/1M/M3 etc...but they also do alot of boring cars which they make lots of money from because people buy them for the badge/brand (as you have found out with your 320i).

The only Z4 worth considering would be one with a 6 cylinder engine, even than theres no real reason why you should pick a Z4 over a 370Z or Boxster. I know if I had £25 to spend and didn't need to worry about having rear seats/boot I don't think any BMW would get anywhere near the short list

Saw this and thought, you would need to be mad!

BMW's are boring and will rape you for servicing and repairs

No thanks

Repairs, yes, but not servicing. 350's need serviced every year, p1, p2, p1, p3. £170ish for P1 and £250-£300 for P2 and P3. The BMW needs serviced only every second year at about £250. Ofcourse there are always specialists and indy's who can do both cars for much cheaper. Even Porsche servicing is reasonable for Boxsters and Carrera's.

Anyway...

For £25 budget does it have to be new? Because a not too old 911 can be had for that money which will be fast and eat any annual mileage you throw at it. Plus, it's a Porsche :D

Every 2 years? Really?! I find that hard to believe

After owning 2 Audi's (same premium German brand crap) I couldn't believe the cost of servicing alone, luckily I had no repair bills as it was under warranty

One of the DSG boxes needed replacing on my 2nd Audi, I asked them what it would cost if it wasn't under warranty and they quoted me "in the region of £7,000" :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare: :scare:

And you're surprised an impressive bit of delicate engineering is expensive to replace when it goes wrong?

If you stick with the main dealers, the cost is always around £100p/h, regardless of brand. Kyle is spot-on when he talks about comparing service costs between marques, as they're not that different anymore. Granted, an annual service on a Ferrari is going to be significantly more than on a Micra, but a Zed, a Cayman or a 135i are all going to be in the same ballpark.

No but I wouldn't expect it to be half the cost of the car

Just in my experience, the "premium" brands i.e. BMW, Audi, Merc etc are all a lot more expensive than Nissan for example, even on the Zed.

Coupled with the fact that the Zed seems to be a LOT more reliable overall than the German brands, they've really gone downhill in recent years, particularly Merc and Audi

Again, all personal experience :)

Every 2 years is the service schedule, of course if you're doing 20k a year it'll need done annually. The girlfriend just bought an 09 1 series from a main dealer and it doesn't need touched until 2015 according to the dealer and the onboard computer.

I've found servicing on the 335i is no more expensive than the Z, the biggest cost (just as with the Z) is the amount I've spent on mods. Infact I'm alot more confident doing stuff on the car my self these days simply because I couldn't find many garages that wanted to install the various bits I keep on buying for the car . All the trim bits are made from very high quality plastics, and stuff in the engine bay is nicely laid out, and I've yet to break anything (apart from one ECU plug holder thingy) :headhurt:

The servicing intervals are almost unbelievably long, the oil surface is every 20,000 miles or every 2 years , the Civic needs has a service interval of 12,500 or every 12 months. Ofcourse if you go the main dealer than the costs are stupidly high...someone has to pay for the posh show room, 'free coffee' and the BMW 'brand'. I would go as far to say my local BMW dealer is simply the worst main dealer I've ever come across, arrogant, patronising, and generally a total disinterest in cars...the fact every time i've dealt with them I was wearing my gym gear might have something to do with their attitude towards me though :p
